Shoes off house rule

BettyBi0 · 02/03/2016 16:11

So we have a shoes off rule in our house. Mainly because of the grubby London streets and dog poo everywhere locally plus a floor licking toddler.

Every time my parents visit I have to ask them to take their shoes off. EVERY Fing TIME! They act like its such a massive imposition.

AIBU or would you just shut up and put up?

How exactly is it on a par with correcting someone's spelling? You made an incorrect sweeping statement.

MistressDeeCee · 03/03/2016 15:08

Well..Im from a country where everybody takes their shoes off at the entrance to someone's home, they leave shoes on the mat. Which is normally just inside front door. So we do same in UK. Its considered the height of rudeness there to walk into somebody's house with your shoes on, dont think Ive ever seen anyone do it. I think its a nice idea not to traipse outside shoes all over your home. But I don't know that in UK for example, people would naturally always remember to remove shoes. If its not something theyve grown up with, that is. OP you can leave slippers just inside front door then guests take shoes off, put slippers on

Wasnt there a thread on here once about an OP who provided slippers with a really weird name, for that purpose? Wish I could remember name of the slippers but the description made me laugh for ages. I think she was stealth-boasting re. visitors having to remove shoes AND wear the sooo high quality slippers provided insteadSmile

KatharinaRosalie · 03/03/2016 15:10

Artisanal slippers!

VilootShesCute · 03/03/2016 15:10

Manners, Mitzy, manners.

MitzyLeFrouf · 03/03/2016 15:12

I think my manners have been pretty impeccable. Feel free to follow my lead.

JessieMcJessie · 03/03/2016 15:18

I think, Viloot that the poster who was lacking in manners is the one
who described people who do not automatically remove shoes on entering another's house as "fucking rude": a breathtakingly sweeping statement after 15 pages of numerous people explaining why "shoes on" was their preference.

MistressDeeCee · 03/03/2016 15:31

KatharinaRosalie thats the one! That thread was hilarious. & the thought of guests being compelled to remove shoes and then stick on ridiculous looking pointy slippers just tickled me.. even now I cant quite work out whether OP was serious or not, but I think she wasGrin

Pyjamaramadrama · 03/03/2016 15:37

Oh gosh not house slippers.

Isn't there are middle ground?

Jessie, apparently I have no manners and was just making a comment on mitzys comment about me. Iyswim. Smile

Natsku · 03/03/2016 16:02

'It's rude not to go along with the rules of the house you find yourself in' seems wiser

That sounds good to me. If I was invited to a shoes-on house I'd keep my shoes on. I automatically takes my shoes off when I enter a house because its been bred (possibly smacked) into me by my parents but I'd stop/put them back on if asked/told. And likewise I'd want people to go along with the rules of shoes off in my house.

JessieMcJessie · 03/03/2016 16:18

Yes, but with a caveat. comeonsummer declared it "fucking rude" to keep your shoes on in someone's house. However she failed to realise that some people simply would not think that the rules of the house they were in might require this, because it is so far from their own experience/culture/upbringing. Therefore they were not intentionally being rude by doing what they were brought up to do and not asking whether the homeowner preferred shoes to come off.

So I'd say that the new rule we have learned on this thread is "it's rude as a host not to make the rules clear and/or as a guest not to ask". Of course it follows that it's rude not to comply with the rules once they are stated.

JessieMcJessie · 03/03/2016 16:19

Sorry "might require this" should read "might require shoes to come off".

Mrsw28 · 03/03/2016 16:31

This always really bothers me when I see it on mumsnet.

We are a "no shoes in the house" house. I have a two year old and a 5 month old who are on the floor but even before we had them we didn't allow shoes in the house, I grew up in a house that was no shoes.

I can't get over how people don't "get it"!! The street is filthy, there is literally urine, faecal matter, saliva, engine oil, bird excrement, food waste, vomit, general grime etc EVERYWHERE. The germs are countless. I cannot believe people don't care about all that being trodden into their houses, on their carpets, into their bedrooms etc.

Having children makes this even more unbelievable for me. I don't wrap my kids up in cotton wool and helicopter parent but I do take precautions to ensure that they are as safe as possible and the house is as clean as possible for them.

Some people don't get it because we have a dog - they don't realise that the dog is only allowed in the kitchen, the lounge and the conservatory. Not the playroom or upstairs at all, ever. Even then, the dog goes out to the conservatory after coming in to dry his feet/get rid of detritus before coming into the lounge/kitchen.

squoosh · 03/03/2016 16:33

Why are you really bothered by other people's house rules? That's just bizarre.

I grew up in shoes on household and my siblings and I have remarkably robust immune systems. So no harm done here.

I agree mrs

there would be no need fir shoes outside if the were clean enough to not worry about the germs.

I'm. no clean freak but I dont want traces of urine, animal or human faeces and vomit, traipsed through my house.

how cab people get so wound up about dig shit and the fact that it carries parasites that can cause blindness and then think it's on to wear shoes that carry it into a house.

Pyjamaramadrama · 03/03/2016 16:38

MrsW I don't get how people can not get it either. Although I'm not military about shoes off because I don't want to upset visitors. Instead I just quietly cringe.

I suppose people think they've always done it and never got ill.

For me it just feels horrible though. I walked up from school today and in front of us I saw two girls unknowingly walk straight through dog poo, their mum pushed her pram through it.

It's perhaps telling that I know where all the dog poo is on the school run and guide ds around it. Everyone else was just oblivious and went straight through it carrying on chatting.

Most of it is now trodden all across the pavement so it's like dodge the shit.

squoosh · 03/03/2016 16:39

Surely shoes are primarily worn to keep one's feet dry and to avoid injury on glass, pebbles etc.?

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/03/2016 16:41

And to keep feet, clean. for inside the house

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 03/03/2016 16:42

I can't believe adults need reminding! Basic manners.

squoosh · 03/03/2016 16:43

Honestly, people should do what they want in their own homes. But all this angst over other people's decisions regarding their own floors is just ridiculous.

Basic manners where Waitrose? As I said earlier I've only ever come across one household that had this rule. It's not 'basic manners' with anyone I know.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/03/2016 16:51

Ok, so how many would walk down a street in their local town. that was garuntee stone and glass free?

are you ok with that? if you are willing to spread traces of pavement throughout someone's house then you should be able to walk down a litter free street complete with the bird shit and wall through your own home with it on your own feet?
