Baby gender reveal party!

Firstly, it should be 'sex' not 'gender', but that's not my issue.

Maybe I've lived in a bubble the past few years, but I've only just realized these existed. For those of ignorant ones like me, this is where a sonographer doesn't share the sex of the unborn child with the parents, but sends it off to a baker, who then makes a cake either with blue or pink sponge, covered with icing. It may get sent to a balloon supplier too who blows up a load of pink or blue balloons depending on the result.

So, the parents or parent, hosts a party at which guests are invited to share in the drama of finding out the baby-to-be's sex.... The cake is cut into and the assembled throng whoop and cheer as the sex is revealed, with many congratulations given.... The couple would then let loose the balloons (hitherto encased in some kind of sack to keep the suspense), gazing open mouthed in wonder as the news of their foetus' sex is carried off to the world on the four winds, providing an Instagram-tastic opportunity.....

AIBU to think this is kind of party is the height of a toe-curling, self-indulgent pretention that I hope never catches on (though I believe it already has the in the States).... or am I just being a grumpy, fun-hating grouch.

I'm more concerned with those cases when the baby turns out to have a different sex than the scan showed.

lynholmerpark · 02/03/2016 21:27

And gender not only identified through body parts or absence thereof.

Andylion · 02/03/2016 21:34

It's the absolute depths of self-indulgence, but you know, if people are into it and their families are too, then no harm done.
Except that it breeds more self-indulgence. Thirty years from now the world will be overflowing with narcissists.

I fear not.

It would make more sense if it was a child raised as agender and then the family would have a big party to reveal the actual sex of the child.

Ericaequites · 02/03/2016 21:59

My mother didn't know I was a girl until I was delivered all the way. I weighed 9 3/4 pounds, so the doctor announced I was a football player, then realized I was a cheerleader.
I am an American, and find all this fuss excessive and tasteless.

ZiggyFartdust · 02/03/2016 22:23

This is one of those things I wouldnt do, don't entirely understand, but also don't get why anyone would have a problem with other people doing. I mean, so what? They enjoy it, presumably, for some reason. There is cake, and balloons and happy people...not harming anyone else, giving pleasure to the people involved.
Seems oddly churlish and not a little twatty to have such a problem with people doing something that they think is fun.

StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2016 13:04

" the doctor announced I was a football player, then realized I was a cheerleader"
And can they be the other way round?

scrumptiouscrumpets · 03/03/2016 13:10

I know two couples who were told they were having a girl, and it turned out to be a boy. Would be a real laugh if this happened to someone who decided to have a gender reveal party!

My god, what a bunch of party poopers you all are.

I've opted for a gender reveal over a baby shower as this is:

A) Our first child
B) The first baby in the family since we lost our two precious nephews two years ago
C) The first nephew/neice for my SIL that lost her sons

So, yes, I'm sorry if it's a bit pretentious to you, but how is a baby shower not so? They seem so much more me, me, me.
I see this party as a way for me to see everyone from both mine and my DH side of the family in one and celebrate this miracle baby with cake and fun.

Boo you guys.
