DH has just decided to 'wind down' listening to them tonight. I forgot he liked them, but have just been subjected to their 'greatest' hits. I genuinely forgot blocked out the trauma of just how crap they really are.
Wailing music, gobby frontmen, repetitive lyrics, and bigger egos than Donald Trump.

Maybe I'm 20 years too late for this AIBU, but had to ask. They are shit, aren't they?

'The rivalry was created by the media'

Yes, it is all good for business and media publicity. Never followed the publicity in detail at the time, but was it coordinated between the two camps to boost sales for both?

Oasis were a Beatles knockoff with a touch of Slade which is why I liked them. Lots of catchy Beatles/Slade type tunes - "Half a World Away" just one of them.

VioletVaccine · 28/02/2016 22:06

I was a Prodigy fan so managed to skip the Oasis Vs Blur competition in the 90s!
I just genuinely can't see their appeal..

Yeah I think it probably was claig , it definitely worked through !

MoonriseKingdom · 28/02/2016 22:40

I am sure the management of both bands loved the media rivalry as it boosted sales hugely. I think Blur at least didn't like the way things were going and had a reasonably big turn of musical direction following this. Their music became much darker and more introspective. Oasis just kept churning out increasingly inferior versions of the same old rubbish.

[high fives Violet]

goldensquirrel · 28/02/2016 22:50

'Cigarettes and alcohol' was really vibrant and exciting. I started sixth form college when these songs became played alot. I had the Lemon Heads album when I was about 14 but just couldn't relate to this American stuff at all- dreary and moany and I didn't inhabit their world. I didn't know a Ray let alone feel it was 'a shame about Ray'.

I also really liked Blur and Pulp. Jarvis Cocker wrote some very British lyrics- 'Take your year in Provence and shove it up your ass!'

Crazypetlady · 28/02/2016 23:43

YADBU . There songs as others have said stood the test of time. Despite their personalities there is no denying the talent, one of my all time favourite bands.

liz70 · 28/02/2016 23:59

Pub band that got lucky.

FellOutOfBedTwice · 29/02/2016 00:01

Love pretty much all the music to come out of Manchester- apart from these fellas. Saw them live in 2002 with a friend, didn't really get it. Saw Noel supporting The Stone Roses in 2012, didn't really get it. Not offended by them but don't like them.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 29/02/2016 00:02

I like five of their songs, my favourite being Acquiesce, so on that basis for me personally yabu, but tis all subjective.
Liked five from Blur but also liked Elastica (sure Damon had more of a hand in that than officially stated) and Gorillaz
Have probably listened to more Pulp/Radiohead though so they win.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 29/02/2016 00:06

Actually, scrap that, Puressence wins. Shame they weren't more successful as they were brilliant live.

YANBU. There were rubbish - vastly over-rated, with turgid, meaningless lyrics which were seen has having 'depth' when they clearly didn't.

I spent years being bullied by Liam-esque morons, so it was really depressing to go to uni and find how many girls seemed to fancy him and his types. Don't think my confidence has ever really recovered.

The Beatles comparisons were ludicrous - if anything, they were closer in musical style to Slade, and not half as good as them!

Some great bands came to the fore during the Britpop era (like Pulp, the Manics and the vastly under-rated Kenickie), but Oasis were certainly one of the worst!

liz70 · 29/02/2016 00:15

Liam Gargoyler was/is a whiny voiced monkey in an anorak. Fuck knows what anybody sees in him.

Mypubesarestraight · 29/02/2016 00:21

Take that back!

kickassangel · 29/02/2016 00:25

I once bought a copy of 13 on my way to visit my Dsis. I asked if I could play it in the car. After the first song (Tender) she said, "All I can hear is noise".

But then, she liked Kenny Rogers and had a copy of Wogan's Floral Dance

liz70 · 29/02/2016 00:35

Separated at birth.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 29/02/2016 00:41

I used to like them but I never listen to them now, just a bit chainsaw guitar.

Suede however were brilliant, and even better now Smile

JeremyZackHunt · 29/02/2016 00:48

Oasis were like a copy of the Sun. Popular in the moment, easy to hear but ultimately a bit shite.
Noel probably had some talent as a rewriter of a standard but that was about it.

MargotLovedTom · 29/02/2016 00:59

Supersonic, Listen Up, Rocking Chair, Half A World Away - fantastic.

Pulp were the dog's though. And yy to Suede -The Chemistry Between Us is just swoony and Animal Nitrate makes me want to shake my hips like Brett (unfortunately they're a lot more ample).

Destinysdaughter · 29/02/2016 01:13

I have a few things I want to say about this.

1 how can you compare Pulp to Oasis? Pulp were bloody brilliant!

2 without Oasis we wouldn't have had the fabulousness of Mike Flowers Pops doing Wonderwall?

See below. Grin

Destinysdaughter · 29/02/2016 01:14

( And yes, Oasis the clothes shop is shit! )

MargotLovedTom · 29/02/2016 01:19

Pink Glove by Pulp is one of my all time favourite songs (and how many other songs have the singer exclaiming "Sod off!"? Truly a Different ClassWink).

Glastokitty · 29/02/2016 01:31

Oasis have always been utterly shit. They are a pub band Beatles karaoke act. And both brothers are tossers, although Liam obv. worse.

TamaraLamara · 29/02/2016 01:51

YANBU

'Football chants set to discarded Beatles riffs' is the most accurate description I ever heard of them.

TamaraLamara · 29/02/2016 01:52

Pulp, however = fucking wonderful.
