To load everything I possibly can into the dishwasher?

I'm knackered. My 7.5 month old hasn't slept properly in months till 2 weeks ago when he started sleeping in our bed. Great but I can't sleep properly with him in there. I usually wash pots, pans, chopping boards etc by hand and only put crockery and cutlery in the dishwasher. Today I had enough as feel like j spend half my day washing bloody dishes so I loaded the dishwasher with everything and put it on. I feel slightly wasteful and lazy doing this but it's given me loads of extra free time. Would it be reasonable to do this and put the dishwasher on every day or is it a waste of electricity?

And they didnt crack ?great will be shoving them in too

AnonymousBird · 23/02/2016 08:48

Well, all I can say is, mine didn't crack! I put in the plastic tray bits from the doors and the salad trays, plus the glass screens and it all survived. No reason it should crack, it's just like putting in plastic plates/cups isn't it? I don't do if often and just put them in on their own.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/02/2016 08:55

I have Circulon hard anodised saute pans that are dishwasher safe. The one I use most has been in the DW about twice a week for at least five years without damage.

I also have cheap ikea frying pans that aren't dishwasher safe so may get damaged eventually but I'm happy to replace them every couple of years rather than wash them by hand.

I would say yes to the fridge shelves etc. Has anyone mentioned the washing machine soap drawer and kitchen bin yet? When I had a gas cooker, I also put the frame things in there, also BBQ grill.

My current (cheapest available Bosch) dishwasher has an extra spray head where you remove the top basket, attach the spray head at the back and it can be used to wash things too big to fit in otherwise - brilliant.

I think a lot of longetivity and success with dishwashers is down to your water hardness - I am lucky that mine is very soft - I usually use Aldi all in one tablets but if they are out of stock, I just get the normal ones and don't bother with salt or rinse aid and everything is fine.

My first dishwasher lasted 13 years of almost daily use and appalling treatment before dropping dead suddenly. I never rinse anything and only do the most basic scraping. Everything including pans comes out clean apart from things with egg on them.

Maybe not baking trays but I stupidly used to hand wash baking trays because I got some lovely ones in the sale from Sainsburys that I wanted to keep nice before realising that I hate washing them so am now going to put them in the dishwasher and if they get ruined throw them away and use disposable ones - lifes really too short to spend ages scrubbing baking trays and I am a 'low consumer' of lots of other things (hardly ever buy clothes and wear them for years for example) so I will allow myself this one wasteful thing that makes my life easier.

Dishwashers aren't good for wooden chopping boards. I can't put my pans in either because the abrasive action isn't good for the non stick coating. I admit that I am rather precious about my kitchen ware as I like to buy really good quality stuff that lasts for ages - and it probably lasts longer because I don't put it in the dishwasher.

Krampus · 23/02/2016 09:18

Wouldn't put wooden ones in the dishwasher but we only use those for bread. Plastic chopping boards get sterilised in the dishwasher, I take the option of putting the meat and veg boards in the dishwasher every time.

oldlaundbooth · 23/02/2016 13:08

Ha, OP, this is me too.

Fuck mincing around washing pots.

I put pretty much everything in the dishwasher, I don't have the time or inclination to be washing up. I rinse pans etc before they go on, everything comes out sparkling.

Let go of the Protestant guilt! Use the dishwasher! Grin

oldlaundbooth · 23/02/2016 13:10

Except wooden chopping boards.

Whitney168 · 23/02/2016 13:18

I put everything in. If it doesn't survive the wash then it wasn't worth having and I'll replace it with a dishwasher safe version

This, why would you have a dishwasher and wash all that by hand. I don't put wooden stuff in there, or ... nope, that's it.

Can i put the fridge compartments and shelves in the dishwasher

Yep, particularly the door tray that has the milk in, gets filthy in our house so goes in regularly.

SushiAndTheBanshees · 23/02/2016 13:22

If you don't rinse stuff first the food particles get caught by the filter. Which you then have to empty every wash, else that same food is going to be sloshing around the next time you switch the dishwasher on. It's a bit minging really.

dementedpixie · 23/02/2016 13:32

You scrape the plates but there is no need to rinse beforehand. The detergent needs something to work on

geekymommy · 23/02/2016 14:36

There are dishwasher safe nonstick pans, at least here in America.

GrouchyKiwi · 23/02/2016 14:51

Shock Someone way up thread mentioned putting oven racks in. Genius! I am going to try this.

And the oven door glass stuff (if I can get it out).

I feel like my world has expanded.

justalittlelemondrizzle · 23/02/2016 14:56

I wash everything in the dishwasher. Even the pans that apparently arent dishwasher safe Hmm its not damaged them so ive carried on. I never once thought not to put the chopping board in there.

BoSelectaBigBiff · 23/02/2016 15:21

I so need to show DH this thread. For ages I've been saying we should put everything in our dishwasher, not just plates, cups & cutlery, but he's not convinced. Maybe if he was washing up the pans etc every day instead of me, then he'd need less convincing...

I like the analogy with the washing machine though. FFS, I even machine wash all my "hand wash only" clothes. Why on earth am I not using the dishwasher for all the pans etc?!?!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/02/2016 15:30

Le creuset non stick frying pans get buggered in the dishwasher

Otherwise it's all fair game. Grin

How effective have the oven door trials been? I would be hesitant as anything not removed would just get baked on wouldn't it?

oldlaundbooth · 23/02/2016 15:33

You can put an oven door in a dishwasher? Shock

dustarr73 · 23/02/2016 15:40

My microwave plate gets washed in there.Im doing my fridge tomorrow so im going to try it with the shelves.

Ameliablue · 23/02/2016 15:49

My pans etc can be washed in the dishwasher, but then you look at the small print and it states it will reduce the lifespan. So I guess it really depends if you mind replacing more often. It's just personal choice really

LurkingHusband · 23/02/2016 15:49

I put everything in. If it doesn't survive the wash then it wasn't worth having and I'll replace it with a dishwasher safe version.

That's the spirit ! Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/02/2016 17:28

Bo Stop washing the pans!

I washed up for 6 years, had a fuck this moment & told dh it was over to him. He lasted two nights before agreeing we needed a dw. He used to say "well washing up isn't a problem"

DonkeyOaty · 24/02/2016 12:14

Omg at fridge bits and bobs. I am so doing this.

Great stuff. Thanks for reporting back dust.

Will need to look up how to take oven door off...

papayasareyum · 24/02/2016 12:23

I put everything in the dishwasher and if it gets ruined (has only happened once or twice) it wasn't worth having because I don't want to own anything you can't stick in the dishwasher!

Pisghetti · 24/02/2016 12:38

I had a dishwasher installed in my (tiny) kitchen last weekend. I had to remove a cupboard to fit it in but I feel they're even more beneficial for small kitchens as my work tops don't get overrun with dirty dishes when I've only had a cup of tea and a slice of toast! I'm still in the phase of enjoying finding things to go in it. I was a bit hesitant about putting silicone in there but silicone is heat resistant so that's a bit silly really! I have the Bosch model with the optional spray head Barbara mentioned up thread so the oven trays will be getting a going over soon. I hadn't thought about the oven door.....
