To load everything I possibly can into the dishwasher?

I'm knackered. My 7.5 month old hasn't slept properly in months till 2 weeks ago when he started sleeping in our bed. Great but I can't sleep properly with him in there. I usually wash pots, pans, chopping boards etc by hand and only put crockery and cutlery in the dishwasher. Today I had enough as feel like j spend half my day washing bloody dishes so I loaded the dishwasher with everything and put it on. I feel slightly wasteful and lazy doing this but it's given me loads of extra free time. Would it be reasonable to do this and put the dishwasher on every day or is it a waste of electricity?

DH and I moved to our new house with a dishwasher last Wednesday. We have run it every day since...even if it's only been half full. On Sunday it was run twice (full english breakfast then roast dinner).

I am loving not having a kitchen full of dirty dishes.

clippityclop · 22/02/2016 22:37

Clean your filters and spray arm, fill it up and relax. Repeat at least once a day as necessary!

StickyToffeePuddingAndCustard · 22/02/2016 22:38

This may be obvious but don't put wooden plates, lazy susans, wooden salad bowls in there as they split. The StickyToffee household has lost several due to DH's determination that everything is fair game.

I recall buying a new frying pan in a kitchen shop and the assistant was horrified that I was going to put it in the dishwasher. It is still going strong 8 years later.

Wash your loo brush separately to your dishes < proud of high standards >

madmother1 · 22/02/2016 22:40

Don't put wooden chopping boards in though! They crack up! Everything else...yes!

ceeveebee · 22/02/2016 22:43

My PILS are like this and consequently so is DH, dishwasher is apparently only for plates and cutlery (and even then only on special occasions, like Sunday's. He will never use it on weekdays). Everything else must be washed by hand painstakingly slowly, then dried and put to air on the worktop in a pile before finally putting away. Then he towel dries every dish when it's taken out of the dishwasher. Honestly it takes him well over an hour just to tidy up every night, I just leave him to it.
I on the other hand put absolutely everything in if it's my turn to wash up.

PrimalLass · 22/02/2016 22:45

I unscrewed the oven door recently and put that in.

CharleyDavidson · 22/02/2016 22:46

Our saucepans have wooden handles, so the salt does them no good at all. They are now washed very quickly as soon as the food is taken out of them and everything else goes in the dishwasher. We can only fit a slimline one in the kitchen so it does go on every day.

PrimalLass · 22/02/2016 22:47

And I chose a highchair that clipped on to a dining chair so I could put it in the dishwasher.

HelenF35 · 22/02/2016 22:51

I have been told the tray for my ikea high chair can go in too! GrinGrinGrin

Sometimes the highlight of my evening is scurrying around the house looking for more things to put in the dishwasher.

You're clever, not lazy.

sleeplessinmybedroom · 22/02/2016 22:57

I'm so jealous of you all with your amazing dishwashers. I spend my life washing up by hand. Stupid tiny kitchen.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 22/02/2016 23:03

I came on to say anything but the toilet seat is fine, but see that I've been beaten to it!

If it fits (and doesn't come from the bog) then in it should go.

Grapejuicerocks · 22/02/2016 23:03

I can't get over the fact that some people still rinse everything before they put it in. My last dishwasher lasted 10 years and was still going strong when we moved. Rinsing everything first is pointless extra effort. But loads of people seem to still do it.

MummySparkle · 22/02/2016 23:04

primallass oven door in the dishwasher?! Tell me more my oven is in desperate need of a clean! Did it come out all shiny and new? What setting did you have it on!

AJ279 · 22/02/2016 23:04

I think you are completely unreasonable to use the dishwasher and that you're extremely lazy because I don't have a dishwasher and I'm jealous.

RobotMenu · 22/02/2016 23:24

op. You need AT LEAST two IKEA trays (buy a spare). One in the dis hashed and the clean one on. (You could always buy a third for painting/ art etc. on...)

RobotMenu · 22/02/2016 23:24

Aargh!

Two IKEA high chair trays

One in the dishwasher...

GlitterGlassEye · 22/02/2016 23:27

Everything in my dishwasher too! I also have an ikea high chair which goes in, even the seat with the top drawer out, for a good clean. 3 kids and the cheap ikea chair has been the best by far for getting clean. Previous high chairs had all the bells and whistles but were impossible to get spotless. I don't rinse anything either which dp is sure is going to fuck it. It's 12 years old ffs Hmm.

Moln · 22/02/2016 23:27

I stick everything in (except the wooden board) though I admit I've recently bought frying pans I'm being precious about and wash by hand.

gunting · 22/02/2016 23:28

If I could put myself in the dishwasher I would.

Don't feel bad!

QuadrupleL · 22/02/2016 23:28

"I put everything in. If it doesn't survive the wash then it wasn't worth having and I'll replace it with a dishwasher safe version"

Yep!! That's the way to do it. I used to use that philosophy with the tumble drier as well (but then it broke - not as a result, and I never got round to replacing it 3 years later!)

Katarzyna79 · 22/02/2016 23:30

I hate hand washing and dishwasher, but id use the dishwasher given a choice its a godsend. I hate it now though because I load it and unload twice everyday. 8 months ago once a day was enough now more people to care for I do it twice. my pots I cant put in too heavy cast iron, or too bulky wouldn't get them in, otherwise damn right id put them in, anything to give me a breather. don't feel bad OP just do it, saves on energy and bills too.

I'm looking to get the biggest dishwasher available I think mine is a 12 place setting there are some bigger ones. but seems a waste of money right now since it works and its only 2 years old?

Katarzyna79 · 22/02/2016 23:31

sleepless you can get countertop dishwasher if you have a small family, how good they are I don't know look it up? my brother was living with me 3 years and he's got so used to not doing dishes the other day he said I need help finding a small dishwasher, he lives on his own...lol

RobotMenu · 22/02/2016 23:34

This is why I never buy wooden spoons or chopping boards - they don't go in the dishwasher...
