gosh- Didn't you know, pedigrees appeared as if by magic in their perfect Kennel Club standard form. It's quite spectacular isn't it?!!

Hoplikeabunny · 20/02/2016 08:04

How are they 'designer dogs?!!!!' For fucks sake! Pedigrees are the ones with the ethically questionable fucking breed standards imposed on them!!! Could you get any more designer than that?!

Hoplikeabunny · 20/02/2016 08:09

And no, they don't all end up in shelters, because the people who buy them aren't all stupid as you'd all like to believe, we are well aware that they are dogs and that nothing is a definite, so of course we don't chuck them out when it turns out they shed. Mine sheds more than any dog I've ever seen, but I'd jump in front of a train for him if I had to.

nooka · 20/02/2016 08:14

Calm down Hoplikeabunny! It's a phrase that seems to have been coined at about the same time as cross breeds got silly names and started selling for silly money.

I'd not buy a pedigree dog either. I compliment nice dogs when I meet them, I don't rank them by genetic line! I'd judge someone a bit if they described their dog with a silly name (and a straight face) but a lot more if they had an obviously deformed pure breed. Poor pugs and pekes, their lives would surely be better if they had dog shaped heads. Or St Bernards and Irish Wolfhounds with such short predicted life spans.

FelicityFunknickle · 20/02/2016 08:19

I agree that bredding and selling dogs is immoral, given how many dogs are in rescue centres or pts or abandoned ny ppl unable to care for them.
It is really not comparable with having one's own children v adoption.
But even I as someone who doesn't own or want a dog can see that many of them do look lovely.
I don't think I care about the names tbh. It seems churlishto sneer at an agreed term for a cross breed.

ICanSeeForMiles · 20/02/2016 08:20

This is Charlie, who, if people ask, I introduce as a lhasa cross. (But if you want his Sunday name, he's a lhasapoo)
And I luffs him. So take all your poodle hating elsewhere

FelicityFunknickle · 20/02/2016 08:24

"Bredding dogs" breeding of course, not a new food choice. Sorry.

FelicityFunknickle · 20/02/2016 08:26

they're not fucking sofas Grin

lighteningirl · 20/02/2016 08:27

HullyGully thank you for the voice of sanity. Cross-border means two breeds all dogs are bred Saint Bernards didn't pop into the world perfect for purpose. Mongrel means mixed parentage my JRT Chihuahua cross is just that a crossbreed picked because I love JRT but needed a very small dog due to health issues. Call him what you like I love him to bits we spent months checking the rescue centers for the right short haired cross and ended up buying him he's worth every penny of the £400 I paid out of money I worked earned and paid tax on so bog off with your judgemental bullshit.

Lockheart · 20/02/2016 08:39

It's not the silly names that bother me, or the fact that they're crosses, but when any idiot can breed two random dogs together, give the resulting litter a mashed up name and flog them for hundreds of thousands of pounds, then that's exactly what happens. Any idiot does.

Backyard breeders are thriving on this trade.

Yes, backyard breeders can breed pure bred dogs too. I'm not denying that. However it's much easier for them to sell a "designer" cross that doesn't need a pedigree certificate, or have kc registration, or hip scores / eye checks / medical certification etc. I have had labradors and dachshunds, and would never buy one that didn't come with all its paperwork.

Lockheart · 20/02/2016 08:40

Hundreds OR thousands of pounds... That would be some dog!

Hoplikeabunny · 20/02/2016 09:02

Apologies nooka, I was getting a bit worked up, not good for my blood pressure, I didn't mean to pick on your posts particularly!

Personally, have yet to meet a poodle mix that is anything other than friendly, affectionate, trainable, reliable and fun-loving. And yes, healthy! They are so popular with families for a very good reason.

I really don't get the purebreed snobbery either, so many of them are inbred to a ridiculous and cruelly unhealthy degree.

We have had a rescue dog before and spent literally £1,000s on operations for various genetic problems it turned out she had. Who knew? No sign when we got her. Meanwhile we adopted our current so-called "designer" dog from a friend of a friend (so knew her back history) and was chosen purely because she is a v good match for our family, mix wise , is healthy and we knew her origins. She is messy, crazy and imperfect but we adore her and will never give her up because she didn't meet any unrealistic expectations. She is just a dog, but a healthy one and a mix that suits our health and family needs.

Movingonmymind · 20/02/2016 09:36

Oh and we paid £150 for her, far less than we would have paid for a purebreed such as a cocker spaniel. But this isn't the point, we got the Right dog for us, would have paid more if needed. We didn't choose her because she was a so-called designer dog, but because her mix and her own personality were the right fit for us as a family.

NeedACleverNN · 20/02/2016 09:41

This was evee my poodle cross shih Tzu cross Lhasa apso. (Mum was a shih Tzu Lhasa cross and dad was poodle)

She was just a poodle cross to us. She was a lovely dog but very high strung. Walked for miles every day and hated children. She was my mums dog who eventually had to rehome her as my mum unexpectedly fell pregnant and had such a bad pregnancy there was no one left to look after her.

Ignore the costume. It was a fancy dress thing in a dog competition. She won btw Grin

GissASquizz · 20/02/2016 09:45

I've got a cockapoo. Well, he's more poo than cock. Paid a reasonable amount. Liked the breeder and chose her because she had done relevant tests. Met the parents etc. Perfectly happy with my choice. Got a dog that fits in with our family perfectly. There will always be breeders breeding for profit, I'd argue most do. Even the ones who claim to be improving the breed.

GissASquizz · 20/02/2016 09:49

And this is our Poodley Thing. Healthy, wonderful temperament and part of our family.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 09:55

I am not sure how posting cute pictures of your dog makes you think that negates the argument?
This happens on every thread like this, never mind the overflowing rescues, look how sweet my dog is, you are all talking a load of rubbish Hmm

Movingonmymind · 20/02/2016 09:57

Shame! People love their dogs and proudly post photos? And what's wrong with that. Feel free to read my posts and tell me exactly how I am talking rubbish, you seem to have chosen your user name with care, Goady.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 09:57

Oh look, another cute picture. He was dumped for not being cute enough by the breeder. There are loads in rescue like this, I post a new one on every thread. People don't want to know about that though. There are pedigrees too, with overbites, hernias that the breeder doesn't want to pay for, other small imperfections.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 09:58

Excellent argument moving, intelligent and well thought out, really addresses all the issues raised, well done you.

Movingonmymind · 20/02/2016 09:59

Yes and how does this connect to recent posters talking rubbish? Please
enlighten us, if you're able to do so.

Movingonmymind · 20/02/2016 10:01

Thanks for patronising pat on head, Goady. I was in no way addressing all the issues in one post but making several pertinent points from my own experience. Feel free to debate properly or cease the attacks.

UndramaticPause · 20/02/2016 10:01

glitter have I missed where you are in the UK? I'd love to take on one of your lurcher pups or sight hounds.
