I am actually not bothered whether you give your dog a made up breed name or call him a crossbreed or mongrel.
However I do think that giving a mongrel/ crossbreed a cute name justifies breeding more and makes people want it. Not all of these dogs end up in rescue but many do, as do many pedigree dogs and many mongrels who haven't been given a cute 'breed' name.
There are too many dogs in this country and not enough homes.
I have two Sprollies, a Coltriever and an Akitador - otherwise known as a pack of unwanted mongrels.

UndramaticPause · 20/02/2016 10:30

goady oh poor thing tbh I've never met a mean greyhound. I've met loads of mean terriers and the occasional snarling retriever. I love a dog with a kind face and greyhounds definitely fit that criteria

ItWillWash Unsure if you will see this, but here is my Dads Jackshit Jack Russell cross Shihzhu....

His name is Rocco and his front paws turn outwards Grin

Crossbreed yes not a designer dog.

What annoys me more is the breeders who don't think about the breed imperfections eg pugs trouble breathing etc. in effect if you crossbreed you should reduce those imperfections but I've known people breed pug and basset hound and poor dogs and their puppies had breathing problems and back/leg problems and didn't live long.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 10:43

I do believe you Mrsdevere, I had trouble with one rescue, I was just trying to say that the default option shouldn't be to buy, which it is often. I think the smaller independent ones can be more flexible. I am with you that I don't care which country the dog is from, my dad has one from Romania and Cyprus is heaving with unwanted poodle cross puppies. Helen will always take the dog back too if you don't get on with it.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 10:45

Did the op come back or are they laughing that I was sucked in again?

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 20/02/2016 10:51

I think buying from a breeder can be the default option sometimes through ignorance or lack of experience, but in my case, having had two rescue dogs before, it was a carefully considered choice. It's annoying for people like me to see the general attitude that I should have made a different choice, without those people knowing why we made that choice.

If I had no kids, I would have rescued 3 at a time, whatever the breed!

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 10:56

I think the annoyance goes both ways once, I think it's clear from this thread that people will still do what they think is best for them regardless of what other people say.
I think the #adoptdon'tshop campaign is doing a good job.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/02/2016 10:56

I love greyhounds and my first dog was a greyhound from the RGT but after she died during a routine dental I knew I could never have another Grey or a lurcher as they're prone to needing dentals. Cost me £400 a year to have her teeth done, not covered by insurance. Id have been too scared about another dog dying during a dental.

Plus her recall wasn't great, but better than most greyhounds and I wanted a dog I could trust off the lead 100% and that isn't likely with a sighthound.

Plus I wanted a small dog as we'd bought a campervan by then and every time I wanted to open the fridge I had to put the dog outside!

Movingonmymind · 20/02/2016 11:06

Which includes respecting the choice, Goady (not attacking) those of us who have carefully and responsibly adopted a cross poodle breed! I did so after months pf research and months of looking. I did not want to adopt a dog unseen from overseas and found one through my personal network, the very best option. Far safer than many rescue options for my family.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 11:09

It's interesting that you keep using the word 'attacking' to anyone that suggests that people who continue to fuel breeding are contributing to a dog cruelty and neglect problem.
I am annoyed that you don't care about that and use 'personal choice' with regards to living, breathing creatures.
So we are both annoyed.

Movingonmymind · 20/02/2016 11:13

Not at all, Goady- I say it to you alone- rather than reading my posts, you attacked me, sneery 'friend' fee for my dog??? How nice. No acknowkedgement of my response tnought why i should justify mystlf to a ranty stranger... Also others earlier you ridiculed for talking 'rubbish' when all they were doing was posting photos of their beloved pets! Not nice.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 11:14

Not at all moving, I was saying that those who supported breeders were saying that others were talking rubbish. I should have put it in quotes.
You bought a dog- own it.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 11:15

I am a rangy stranger who gives a lot to rescues, what does your rant supporting breeders do?

Movingonmymind · 20/02/2016 11:17

Oh get off your high horse and go away goady, you're attacking someone who did not buy from a breeder and adopted responsibly a dog who would have gone to a rescue or been PTS. You're doing a disservice to rescues by attacking me like this. Read the bloody posts!

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 11:17

ranty Grin

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 11:18

You go away moving, I am perfectly entitled to be on this thread. Take your personal attacks elsewhere.

No, unfounded attacks are not acceptable and i will report.

Goadyflattery · 20/02/2016 11:24

I just love the names Mrsdevere, it is hard I agree. I met someone (again at the vets) who bought a cavalier King Charles from the back of a van in a carpark. The dog was very ill, the vet said it had rat bites on it and they have spent thousands on it. The people who sold it said that it was easier to meet at the car park.
In all honesty, I would not have been able to walk away either.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 20/02/2016 11:27

Girl at work has a Poodle Shitzu mix, it is probably the cutest dog ever!

ItWillWash · 20/02/2016 11:28

Aww bless him.

I couldn't buy a dog Sad I would love to. A cute, fluffy little puppy but I just couldn't bring myself to line the pockets of a breeder.

I might scour rescues looking for Jack Shitz and Bull Shitz though just so I can upset the middle class dog walkers who look down on my mutt when they ask what breed it is Grin

Claraoswald36 · 20/02/2016 11:28

My rescue grey was in some ways a perfect dog - excellent recall and very loyal and loving and calm as a millpond but she was scared of small dogs and lo kids

Mominatrix · 20/02/2016 12:22

Here is Doginatrix - an unapologetic cockapoo. Yes, we paid quite a bit for her, but she is worth every penny.

I find it laughable that crossbreeders are caracturized as being irresponsible and shady and pure breeders are worthy and responsible. There are good and bad in both. Prior to purchasing our dog, I thoroughly researched what kind of dog would suit us first then narrowed down on looks. We happened to know 3 cockapoos and really liked them. We found a breeder who we trusted and whose set up suited us (the bitch was the family pet, he had all the paperwork and testing results for the bitch and the stud poodle), insisted that he meet us first and we meet the mother, and allowed us to come visit the puppys a few times prior to choosing which one we would take, etc.

I grew up with rescue dogs and most were fantastic, but they all had their issues. With young children, I wanted to be able to avoid some of the problems we had with my previous dogs.

It is also ridiculous to portray all purchasers of deliberate crossbreeds are vain and poor owners who will not train or exercise their pets properly. It is just ignorance and snobbery.
