To think that tofu is the food of the devil

I am trying to eat less meat - today I tried tofu. Why would anyone eat this?

I love it.

Prefer the firmer texture one but will eat any version. The plain ones though, not the smoked or flavoured stuff.

How did you cook it?

Readysteadyknit · 19/02/2016 19:49

Someone recommended the smoked one. I am not a fussy eater at all but the texture made me gag. Vile

I feel the same way about meat. Smile
Tofu absorbs flavours well, try it in a stirfry.

CityFox · 19/02/2016 19:49

I hate tofu in this country, it's disgusting. For some reason it was really nice every time I ate it in Thailand Confused

bigmouthstrikesagain · 19/02/2016 19:52

After pressing it for 30 mins under a weight (kitchen roll to absorb liquid), you should toss tofu in corn flour and pre fry it till golden. THEN use it in a stir fry, crunchy outside and soft inside and lush. Black pepper tofu recipe is amazing.

bakingaddict · 19/02/2016 19:59

It's how you cook and what spices and sauces you put with it. Bland tofu without any flavouring would be unpalatable

mudandmayhem01 · 19/02/2016 19:59

Lovely in Vietnamese pho ( soup)

Woodenmouse · 19/02/2016 19:59

I love it but only if it's cooked properly. If you go to a decent Chinese restaurant they do amazing things with tofu!

LordEmsworth · 19/02/2016 19:59

Tofu cooked properly is deeelish.

Tofu cooked badly is bleurgh.

Smoked tofu is mmmmm.

Yabu.

Readysteadyknit · 19/02/2016 20:01

bigmouth that actually sounds quite nice - I can imagine the texture would be less gungie - what I had today had a texture similar to play dough.

Yabu, tofu is lovely. Quinoa however is disgusting.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 19/02/2016 20:07

ObiWanCannoli · 19/02/2016 20:07

Tofu is great, but not that silken stuff it's a bit rubbish. Find tofu puffs, brilliant and anything by taifun.

Haggischucker · 19/02/2016 20:07

I've been veggie for over 25 years and I frigging hate tofu (and any other meat type substitute) the only time I was ever able to eat was freshly out deep fryer at yo sushi but as it cooled it got (much) worse!

leedy · 19/02/2016 20:12

Badly cooked tofu is horrible. Deep-fried and then braised in Chinese chilli bean paste, though.... drools quietly over keyboard

HixieRice · 19/02/2016 20:13

YADNBU It makes me horribly ill, though I'm fine with anything soya - work of the devil!

KC225 · 19/02/2016 20:14

YABU

sprouts are the devil's bullets fired straight from hell

Readysteadyknit · 19/02/2016 20:21

Haggis I love vegetarian food but I think it might be the texture of meat substitutes generally - I also hate quorn. I'm not sure why when I do still eat meat.

I will reserve judgement and accept that I might not have cooked it properly Bigmouth the recipe in your link sounds lovely.

Also I had no idea that tofu came in different textures - I just got what was available in my local Sainsburys.

DH just made a delicious meal of roast veggies and tofu with rosemary. I mean it was delicious once I'd picked all the tofu out.

BillSykesDog · 19/02/2016 20:22

It makes lovely thick fruit milkshakes. YABU.

AbbyCadabby · 19/02/2016 20:23

It is all about the way you cook it, and how you season it. Keep trying!

LaContessaDiPlump · 19/02/2016 20:24

There are lots of different ways to prepare tofu - YABU to dismiss it out of hand after trying one!

Oysterbabe · 19/02/2016 20:26

I love it fried with chilli, salt and pepper.

Junosmum · 19/02/2016 20:46

I love it!

Would also like to recommend the Yotam Ottolenghi recipe posted by bigmouth - tofu convert here.
