To think that tofu is the food of the devil

I am trying to eat less meat - today I tried tofu. Why would anyone eat this?

I do the same as Bigmouth.

I use the fresh cauldren stuff and cut it in half, so you have two thinerrectangles.
Wrap it up, heavy books or something and walk away for 20 mins.
Leave it in flavour. Ginger, soy sauce etc.
Cut into smaller bits, if you leave them in larger chunks it wont turn to mush.
Toss in cornflour and fry.

I then serve it on top of a stir fry.

The cauldren pre marinated stuff is all done for you.

I'd love to try tofu but the look of it - just the LOOK of it! - gives me the watery mouth and an inclination to retch! Tried Quorn earlier this week - that got spat back up in double quick time too! What's with that awful soft powdering type consistency? Man - that's some bad shit. However - I do love soya mince and the Asda own brand one from the freezer cabinets is particularly good.
Also down to low/no meat as a household and looking for alternatives - but tofu is not it!

'powdering' s/b 'powdery'. Cold fingers. Grin

TwinkleCrinkle · 19/02/2016 21:34

If you freeze it the texture changes and becomes more 'meaty'. I get the firm tofu and then freeze.
Defrost and press out as much liquid as I can and then marinate and stirfry or bake

Rank.

Bought it twice, bin each time.

Want veggie protein? Lentils.

toffeeboffin · 19/02/2016 21:36

Apparently it raises oestrogen levels too?

scarlets · 19/02/2016 21:38

I love it when it's cooked by someone else.

PreAdvent13610 · 19/02/2016 21:39

toffee everyone should eat lentils, dhal is the future and tasty.

TwatMagnet · 19/02/2016 22:00

I bloody love lentils and I consider myself a good cook but bugger me bandy if I can make a decent dhal. I just can't and I've tried and tried. Any pointers gratefully received!

janethegirl2 · 19/02/2016 22:05

Tofu is rank, wtf would anyone eat this?

HemanOrSheRa · 19/02/2016 22:09

I would love to try and cook tofu myself. I always enjoy it at a chinese restaurant. But I have two questions:

  1. Does it give you dreadful wind? I can't eat quorn for this reason.

  2. Can you buy a block and freeze what you don't use? There is no way in hell that I would get DP (and possibly DS) to eat tofu.

I do the Cauldron between 2 plates to drain thing then marinade cubes in black bean sauce.
Then dry griddle fry.
It tastes like dense scrambled egg.

I'll try the cornflour though, crispy sounds good Smile

BreconBeBuggered · 19/02/2016 23:57

Haven't eaten meat for well over 30 years, and I still can't get to grips with meat substitutes, including tofu. I'll eat it as a last resort in a Chinese restaurant, but I don't really trust it as it doesn't seem like real food to me. DH, not a vegetarian, loves a tofu burger. Yuk.

ciabattav0nbreadstickz · 20/02/2016 00:20

Yanbu. I'm not a veggie but I really enjoy a lot of veggie food, however I do not like meat substitutes (eg quorn) and absolutely hate tofu. It has approximately the texture of wet bread.

Disgusting

TitClash · 20/02/2016 00:26

Cut it into cubes and deep fry until crispy, then its just sort of rubbery chewy egg white.
YANBU.

pinkyredrose · 20/02/2016 11:58

I love basil tofu in salads, lush! Tofu isn't a meat substitute though, not sure why people think it is? It's a food item by itself it's no more a meat substitute than cheese is.

Bumshkawahwah · 20/02/2016 12:12

What pinky says - it's not a meat substitute, it's just not meat. I hated the look of it, but live in Asia so have come around to it and now love it. Sichuan style tofu (ma pou do fu) is divine and deep fried tofu in tamarind sauce is also yum.

Elledouble · 20/02/2016 13:10

IMO, if you don't like tofu you've probably not had it cooked well!

It's so versatile - crispy with a stirfry, marinated in fajitas, silken tofu scrambled or baked in pasta like ricotta. Yummy.
