To be a tad annoyed with maternity unit

sstewart2016 · 17/02/2016 19:14

I phoned the maternity unit at 11am today after contracting since yesterday, they told me to come in for 5 tonight. Still contracting and I haven't been checked on
Just on a bed right next to the nurses station where I can here one nurse saying "bed 3 (me) can't possibly be in Labour she must have ate too much" is this standard Confused this is my first so no idea. Just in so much pain and not really sure what I expected Blush

Perhaps OP means diamorphine which is given in labour.

Can't wait to hear the good news Sstewart. I've been watching this board avidly. I didn't have 'textbook' labours either, everyone is different and many hospitals have different protocols. I expect this is why I've been so pissed off reading posts laced with undertones of cynicism regarding OP's posts.

Ubik1 · 21/02/2016 10:17

Diamorphine is widely used in scotland. I had it on the antenatal ward

MirandaWest · 21/02/2016 10:22

I had diamorphine with both DS and DD in England.

Lj8893 · 21/02/2016 10:29

I assume the op meant diamorphine. We offer that in the hospital where I work, many other hospitals may offer pethidine which is similar.

Hopefully the op is getting some rest while her body and baby work their magic!!

Tootsieglitterballs · 21/02/2016 10:37

Diamorphine - never ever again. It didn't agree with me in the slightest - no recollection of the whole time I was on it. Couldn't imagine having it twice.....

Tootsieglitterballs · 21/02/2016 10:39

Actually , who am I kidding, I couldn't even imagine having it once as I have no recollection of it 😂 !

Even gas and air made me think I was inside the big crystal at the end of crystal maze.....

Runningupthathill82 · 21/02/2016 10:50

Two diamorphine injections would have sent me over the edge, for sure. Just with one, I was apparently heard to ask why we were at a "really great party", and was someone having a baby...!

Lj8893 · 21/02/2016 10:53

Just read that stewart had 2 diamorphine injections! Yep, she's asleep Grin

Tootsieglitterballs · 21/02/2016 10:56

Running - apparently I was talking about lots of little people working inside my tummy to get baby out.... Then started saying I 'need to do it on my own' took them about an hour to realise I was actually trying to say I needed to push... Needless to say it ended in an emergency section!

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 21/02/2016 10:59

Hope you're having newborn snuggles now OP!

Diamorphine was weird. I was already hallucinating off the gas and air (asked DP why there was a line of polar bears wearing socks lined up at the end of the bed), the diamorphine helped with the pain in my back and thighs (back to back labour) but also made me go crazy. I announced to everyone that outside the door was a field with goats, and I was going to go salmon fishing with my dad in the river.

Then I complained and asked someone to tell the person playing bagpipes to shut up. Everyone was Hmm as we had music on but definitely nothing that could be mistaken for bagpipes Grin

It wore off really quickly, I was surprised by it. I didn't want another injection of it so went back to G&A!

IndomitabIe · 21/02/2016 11:13

Well, these stories have certainly reminded me to write NO DRUGS all over my birth 'plan'! (Certainly no opiates!)

I'm more worried about feeling like that than I am about labour itself. Confused

Hope the OP is feeling wonderful!

eatingworms · 21/02/2016 11:24

I had morphine in labour. Not diamorphine but morphine. They usually use diamorphine . but at this time there was a problem with the supply so they were using morphine. This was Scotland. It was a great labour actually!
Hope you're ok OP.

backonthebikeagain · 21/02/2016 11:26

Hows it going op? x

BathshebaDarkstone · 21/02/2016 11:32

With DD2 they sent me home, my contractions started on the bus and I gave birth in the ambulance. I dont have a lot of faith in midwives expertise. Hmm

LizzieVereker · 21/02/2016 11:40

Hope you are OK stewart, hang on in there my love! Flowers

NeedACleverNN · 21/02/2016 11:44

Blimey op I can't believe you are still going!

Strong girl!

I know people probably keep saying it but try to relax and rest as much as possible. You will need all your energy for the final stage.

DisappointedOne · 21/02/2016 11:58

Doesn't diamorphine cross the placenta and make baby dozy?

Lj8893 · 21/02/2016 12:04

It Can do disappointed

sexesam · 21/02/2016 12:10

I had diamophine for my tfmr. Amazing stuff, knocked me right out, didn't hallucinate at all so I can understand having a second injection when it wore off.
Having said that not sure I would want a live baby in that state. Wouldn't turn it down for a broken leg or something like that though!

sstewart2016 · 21/02/2016 12:15

IndomitabIe · 21/02/2016 12:18

Congratulations OP! You've had one hell of a ride, by the sounds of it.

Hope you can get some rest while your baby's in SCBU and hope in 24 hours you'll both be grand.

Well done you!
