I phoned the maternity unit at 11am today after contracting since yesterday, they told me to come in for 5 tonight. Still contracting and I haven't been checked on
Just on a bed right next to the nurses station where I can here one nurse saying "bed 3 (me) can't possibly be in Labour she must have ate too much" is this standard Confused this is my first so no idea. Just in so much pain and not really sure what I expected Blush

Oh right, just thought it was strange as I've never heard of a hospital where they start induction on labour ward. Good luck with it.

sstewart2016 · 20/02/2016 09:17

I think it's because I'm getting the drip? I haven't had any pesseries (sp) so must be the drip

Bless you.

By the time baby's born your going to be begging for sleep!

NeedsAsockamnesty · 20/02/2016 09:25

wooden

Ive had lots of babies ive never felt the need to reserch anything to do with giving birth.

Lots of people don't bother.

What the op has described does not sound much different to a planned induction for HG where they are waiting for her to get a bit more hydrated and possibly hoping they can eek it out a bit because they are busy. It happens

AttitcusFinchIsMyFather · 20/02/2016 09:36

I was on the labour ward for 2 out of my 3 inductions. It is not unusual.

Lj8893 · 20/02/2016 09:38

thomas the hospital where I work just has a labour ward and postnatal ward, so inductions are started on the labour ward (however we do have 2 induction rooms so not proper labour suites!)

Lj8893 · 20/02/2016 09:41

stewart they can't give you the induction (syntocinon) drip without breaking your waters first.

sstewart2016 · 20/02/2016 09:41

Do they get started on labour ward instead of antenatal ward incase the labour is so fast Grin

The OP has also said she is severely anaemic and had already had 2 blood transfusions. With HG as well she is going to be unbelievable tired and weak. Her labour has started and stalled but given that she is at risk of being dehydrated and a possibility of bleeding more than is usual I can completely see why the midwives would want her labour to happen in the hospital under controlled circumstances. It's not a life threatening need to induce which is why she isn't being rushed into it but they would want it to be managed.

Good luck today OP. please feel free to ask the midwives/doctors as many questions as you need to, so that you fully understand what is happening/how that happens/if it is necessary. I hope it all goes well for you. Xxx

Lj8893 · 20/02/2016 09:44

In an induction process, once your ready to go on the drip they would take you to labour ward. But like I say, make sure they don't give you the drip without breaking your waters first!!

HardWorkButTheyMakeMeSmile · 20/02/2016 09:48

Each hospital does it differently. My local one starts you off on the antenatal ward and you move down when your in established labour but there's an element of risk as they are guessing on numbers of expected labours.

If they are using the pit icon drip after waters have gone then they tend to take you down to ensure you have your designated room first.

CommanderShepard · 20/02/2016 09:55

I was induced on labour ward but I had pre-eclampsia so maybe that's why (John Radcliffe, Oxford)

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/02/2016 09:58

If they're going to break your waters and give you a drip without a pessary or gel then they're not following NICE induction guidelines which recommend that "cold" inductions shouldn't be done as it lessens the likelihood of a vaginal birth.

Lj8893 · 20/02/2016 10:04

Nothing the OPs hospital has done so far as been in the NICE guidelines by the sounds of it! simon

IThoughtItWasAFart · 20/02/2016 10:04

Good luck OP!

Early on I wished a woman with suspected mumps well with her labour thinking it was this thread.

sstewart2016 · 20/02/2016 10:14

I'm on the labour ward now! Getting the drip, waters will try to be broken later unless they go themselves. Thanks for the well wishes, hope this goes smoothly and quickly lol

Good luck stewart really hope things start progressing for you.

Oohhh, squishy baby Grin

Lj8893 · 20/02/2016 10:17

They are giving you the drip without breaking your waters first?

BellaOfTheBalls · 20/02/2016 10:18

Sending speedy pain free labour vibes. I hope you get one of those "I sneezed and it fell out births"....

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/02/2016 10:22

lj8893 I know!

Lj8893 · 20/02/2016 10:23

Op, do you mind telling us which hospital this is?

Lj8893 · 20/02/2016 10:24

simon your thinking what I'm thinking arnt you? I will not be surprised when the op tells us she ended up with a c-section.

newbiefrugalgal · 20/02/2016 10:28

Good luck op

DinoSnores · 20/02/2016 10:36

When I was induced early because of complications with the baby, I was 3-4cm to start with and had an irritable uterus so it was felt best to forgo the pessary, so the hope was that simply breaking my waters on labour ward would get things going. It didn't so I had the drip - 3 hours later, DD was born. They put on my notes that I was pushing for 5 minutes, but I don't think it was even that long!

The NICE guidelines are guidelines, not a set of rules to be slavishly followed without considering the patient in front of them. It is impossible for any of us not having the OP's full history, notes, CTGs in front of us to make doom-laden pronouncements like lj8893.

sstewart2016, hope all goes well. Sounds like you have had a rough ride and, however this baby appears, you have done a fantastic job! I've had HG in previous pregnancies and know just how draining it can be.
