Actually, it was pretty collaborative: John lifted the lyrics from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, George did the drone on the tambura, Ringo did the breakbeat (with help from George Martin) and Paul did the Musique Concrete.

Ok. Then he went on to write obladi oblada, The Long and Winding Road, The Frog Chorus etc etc. Yep, he was the experimental one...

Paul did invent heavy metal with Helter Skelter though, so I'd say that was pretty experimental

People always trot out Frog Chorus. It was actually written for an animated Rupert Bear film in a programme featuring the illustrator Alfred Bestall, whom Paul M admired. The little film wouldn't have sounded quite right with a song like Blackbird.

Blackbird is even worse than Frog Chorus imo.

Paul McCartney was the experimental one. The songs you mention were, in the main, written for children. What's wrong with writing children's songs? The Long And Winding Road might have been Paul's song, but Phil Spector produced and arranged the shit out of it, hence the heavy orchestration.

Tbh, I always think "Oh Paul was better/ John was better" is a bit redundant really, like saying oxygen is the more important element in water than hydrogen: John and Paul always said they couldn't have written the way they did if they hadn't had each other to write with/compete with/be inspired by/try to impress, and they should know!

Anyway, this thread has inspired me to go and have a dig through my old Beatles records - cheers!

Don't get me wrong, I think the John/Paul dialectic is really important, I just hate the misconception that John was somehow more left field.

I saw a picture of his brother Mike McCartney with Johnnie Walker the other day. Mike looked so much better (and younger) than Paul does with his dyed hair.

It was John's song but it was Paul that was quoted as saying the woman deserved to have her home set on fire for having the gall not to sleep with a man who was expecting sex.

Oh, I definitely would have when he was young. Paul was my first crush George was the best looking though, and John is my favourite (despite being a bit of a dick sometimes).
