I know he is despised on MN. Today his voice is broken and he is a parody... But yesterday, back in 1965, AIBU to love him then?

Pelvic, l think most people would know that comment on Norwegian Wood was an ironic one and no one with any sense would have taken it literally.

Fairly split on this then! But at least I'm not alone Grin

He has a look of Pete Doherty so for that reason alone, YABU

Oh, I definitely would have when he was young. Paul was my first crush Blush George was the best looking though, and John is my favourite (despite being a bit of a dick sometimes).

The song 'Norwegian Wood', I brought it up further up the thread as what he said would put me right off him whatever he looked like.

What Pelvic?

I've scrolled back a bit and can't work out what your post is in response to. But it sounds like an awful thing.

It was John's song but it was Paul that was quoted as saying the woman deserved to have her home set on fire for having the gall not to sleep with a man who was expecting sex.

(Don't get me started on John)

I saw a picture of his brother Mike McCartney with Johnnie Walker the other day. Mike looked so much better (and younger) than Paul does with his dyed hair.

My dh encountered a rather drunk Macca at Heathrow playing a mouth organ. A little girl and her family tried to get away. All stuck in departure lounge.

I like blackbird. Paul was fab when he was young and wrote amazing songs imo

Yes, I'm looking through mine! Loved the White Album, all the songs remind me of different feelings and angst in my 12 year old self. Ditto Abbey Road. Just listened to 'I Will' again awwwww...

'avant-garde is French for shit' - John Lennon said this ^

I know. I love this about him- taking the piss while out-doing.

Don't get me wrong, I think the John/Paul dialectic is really important, I just hate the misconception that John was somehow more left field.

But it's one of the most beautiful songs ever!

Tbh, I always think "Oh Paul was better/ John was better" is a bit redundant really, like saying oxygen is the more important element in water than hydrogen: John and Paul always said they couldn't have written the way they did if they hadn't had each other to write with/compete with/be inspired by/try to impress, and they should know!

Anyway, this thread has inspired me to go and have a dig through my old Beatles records - cheers!

Paul McCartney was the experimental one. The songs you mention were, in the main, written for children. What's wrong with writing children's songs? The Long And Winding Road might have been Paul's song, but Phil Spector produced and arranged the shit out of it, hence the heavy orchestration.

I've read too many Beatles biographies and books to lose this argument!

Blackbird is even worse than Frog Chorus imo.

People always trot out Frog Chorus. It was actually written for an animated Rupert Bear film in a programme featuring the illustrator Alfred Bestall, whom Paul M admired. The little film wouldn't have sounded quite right with a song like Blackbird.

Paul did invent heavy metal with Helter Skelter though, so I'd say that was pretty experimental Grin

Ok. Then he went on to write obladi oblada, The Long and Winding Road, The Frog Chorus etc etc. Yep, he was the experimental one...

Actually, it was pretty collaborative: John lifted the lyrics from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, George did the drone on the tambura, Ringo did the breakbeat (with help from George Martin) and Paul did the Musique Concrete.

And Paul did the tape loops/backwards guitar solo on the record = experimental.

Tomorrow never knows was written by John.

Ringo was the favourite Beatle in the USA (hence the most fan mail). Looks like he was still getting it until a few years ago:

I saw a photo of him and Mick Jagger sat on a train facing each other having a fag circa 1960 something in JL the other day and thought how lovely he looked.

BTW, it was Ringo who used to get the most fan mail.

No, I think George was better looking.
