Moving to West Yorkshire

Hi. Posting here for traffic.

Please can you help me find a place to live. Needs to be 45 minutes drive max to Wakefield. But not Wakefield.

I have a 19 month old and another due in June so a town with playgroup and soft play is ideal.

We don't want to move to a city and worry a village is too isolating as we will not know anyone. We love Harrogate.

Will be renting to begin with and budget is up to 1k a month.

I have seen mirfield but unsure about high street. Anywhere out there similar to Harrogate? Thanks x

It might be possible to get from Saltaire to Wakefield in the middle of the night, or Sunday morning in 45 minutes but in morning or afternoon commuting time - not on your life.

Realistically you want to be south of the M62 and should really reconsider living in Wakefield itself.

The quality of life gained by a short commute and being near all the bars and restaurants etc is immense. I know someone who lives within walking distance of the city centre and it gives them a lovely lifestyle.

shovetheholly · 09/02/2016 13:49

What about Sheffield? It's about 45 minutes to Wakefield.

Do not under any circumstances move anywhere rural and ABSOLUTELY UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES to Penistone or Denby Dale unless you want to live in Royston Vesey!! Grin

(I have lived there. Trust me on this.)

vickibee · 09/02/2016 13:52

we are in Penistone, two OFSTED outstanding primaries less than a mile from our house if you have young kids It is a great place to live and house prices are more than reasonable - 3 bed semi 150-180 K

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2016 13:55

I live there now. Trust me that it's not.

Parts of Sheffield are commutable to Wakey in 45 mins, but not the parts I'd want to live in.

frikadela01 · 09/02/2016 13:57

Do not under any circumstances move anywhere rural and ABSOLUTELY UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES to Penistone or Denby Dale unless you want to live in Royston Vesey!! grin that's part of the charm Grin

Apparently Clayton West was actually one of the inspirations for Royston vasey. I remember when we first moved there from Leeds going into the local shop was an eye opener.

Rosti1981 · 09/02/2016 13:59

Grew up in HD8 area and parents still live there. It's easy to commute to Wakefield from there and it's a nice quality of life. Schools used to be great and I believe they still are. Great green spaces.

cjt110 · 09/02/2016 13:59

I livwe in HD3. Nice area and good schools. Close to M62, close enough to the hills and countryside too.

Nothing wrong with Royston Vasey... I lived there as a kid... (I really did - It's a place called hadfield in Derbyshire - It was being filmed as I grew up and I used to catch the bus school outside that butchers that is really a proper butchers....)

SuchaJem · 09/02/2016 14:04

Hebden Bridge is lovely

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2016 14:08

It is, but not commutable to Wakefield in 45 mins though Jem.

frikadela01 · 09/02/2016 14:10

It's also a bugger for flooding and public transport getting cut off when there's even the slightest bit of "inclement" weather.

Pannn · 09/02/2016 14:11

And that's where I currently live cjt110. I moved here whilst it was being shown on tv.
Lovely place to live, esp with the special sausages from Mettricks butchers on the high street. Somehow seem tangier than other sausages...Smile

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2016 14:12

That would make sense Frik as the guys who wrote LOG met at Bretton College.

thisisbloodyridiculous · 09/02/2016 14:33

Wetherby!

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2016 15:00

Marginal as to whether Wetherby to Wakey can be done in 45 min at rush hour. If the OP is going to go to Wetherby then she may as well go to Harrogate, which she's already says she likes

shovetheholly · 09/02/2016 15:54

Grin Apologies for the Penistone rudeness! I had absolute neighbours from hell there, and it's hard not to let that colour your view of a place. I don't just mean that they were a bit irritating either - I mean that they were verbally threatening and that they shot my cat. (Yes, really).

Mairyhinge · 09/02/2016 16:11

Despite living here all my life I wouldn't advocate Huddersfield. Not any more.
You've got the m6poo, which is ALWAYS busy/ jammed/ shut. I feel really locked in here as the council are crap, the roads are crap, there's roadworks everywhere, the town centre is crap, and they've even put bus gates up so you can't drive in certain parts of the town centre or you'll get fined, "welcome to huddersfield" it's not.
They're building new houses on every single bit of green land they can find, but only 1 new school, and no Drs surgery.
They're threatening to close our a&e despite us being a hairs breadth away from being a city, we are that big.
If I want to go to Leeds/ Manchester my immediate feeling is dread, due to the afore mentioned motorway.
The hd8 area probably wouldn't be so bad, Dh works in Clayton west and it's near the M1, and near Barnsley.

Whatever you decide I wish you luck.
wonders why I still live in this prison town

Pannn · 09/02/2016 16:16

Is it timely to note that Happy Valley is on tonight, series 2?

MrsGradyOldLady · 09/02/2016 16:19

I live in HD3 too! I used to live in Honley which was HD9 which is closer to Wakefield but the roads get really conjested that way as they're all normal roads (as opposed to motorway).

I really like Lindley. Nice little village, good bars and restaurants, good schools and close enough to Leeds and Manchester. Fantastic people too!

Hoppinggreen · 09/02/2016 17:02

Yes we are all lovely here mrsgrady!!!!

thisisbloodyridiculous · 09/02/2016 17:22

bikerunski my OH does Wby to Wakey every day and makes it in 35 mins good traff, 50mins bad traff! So do-able. Prefer Wetherby to Harrogate Grin

Namechangenell · 09/02/2016 17:23

www.theguardian.com/money/2016/feb/05/lets-move-slaithwaite-colne-valley-west-yorkshire

This was in the Guardian at the weekend. I grew up in HD6/7. Agree that HD8 is lovely - Holmfirth and around. Just over the hills to Manchester and lots to do for children, good primaries and the high school is great.

Always makes me long to live there reading articles like this one. Just need to persuade southerner DH it's the way to go! If nothing else, the prices will sway him (thinks longingly of what our London flat could be switched with)...

SamVJ888 · 09/02/2016 17:36

Agree that Ackworth (high Ackworth anyway) is beautiful, think the line of multi million pound houses suggest its perhaps not run down Grin

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2016 17:44

The bit of Ackworth on the road from the Bev Arms roundabout out towards Pontefract, passed Ackworth School is lovely.

The main part of Ackworth on the main Doncaster-Wakefield road is OK.

Fitzwilliam is verging on grim.
