Moving to West Yorkshire

Hi. Posting here for traffic.

Please can you help me find a place to live. Needs to be 45 minutes drive max to Wakefield. But not Wakefield.

I have a 19 month old and another due in June so a town with playgroup and soft play is ideal.

We don't want to move to a city and worry a village is too isolating as we will not know anyone. We love Harrogate.

Will be renting to begin with and budget is up to 1k a month.

I have seen mirfield but unsure about high street. Anywhere out there similar to Harrogate? Thanks x

Anyway, come to HD8. Away from the M62, motorway provided by the newly smart M1.

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2016 17:48

ridiculous that's good, it usually takes me over an hour.

kateyjane · 09/02/2016 17:53

I live in HD3 Lindley area. We love it! However our 5 bedroom rental is £1400 a month (worth it for us- 4 children, new and lovely). Lovely high Street, nice restaurants, wine bar, cafes, bakers, soft play. 10 mins from Huddersfield or Halifax Centre. 20 mins to Leeds, 40 mins to Manchester, 30 mins to Wakefield.

Currently lots of new housing being built. I think something nice for £1000 a month would be difficult though.

No offence to anyone living in Mirfield or Wakefield or Pontefract but I wouldn't like it. You could probably get a decent house for £1000 pcm though.

Good luck!

MrsGradyOldLady · 09/02/2016 18:34

No I wouldn't fancy Mirfield either because you're basically Dewsbury there. I lived there too but only for 2 years. We left because we had a burglary, a car stolen and were constantly getting stuff nicked from the washing line. Plus we weren't in catchment area for a decent school.

Not too sure about rental prices for HD3 but I do know one friend pays 650 pm for a refurbished 3 bed victorian terrace (although she knows the landlord so possibly getting a good deal) and another friend pays 400ish for a 2 bed flat in a conversion.

Move2WY · 09/02/2016 18:41

This is all fantastic and confusing. Definitely planning on renting initially, but thank you for the beautiful house to buy links!

I'd be surprised if we couldn't get a nice place for 1000 but I suppose I'll have to see. Lots of conflicting info on Denbt Dale etc and o was just starting to lean towards that too! I'll have to take a road trip one weekend soon x

Not just normal soft play either! We have a soft play/roller disco that also has a fully licensed bar AND they actually serve nice food AND also have an adults only retro roller disco night.

We've got (within walking distance) a very good Indian restaurant, Turkish, Bistro, Tapas bar, Italian, Posh gourmet type dining, decent English breakfast/cake type place, another cafe that's more upmarket for lunch, another good Indian slightly further away, loads of takeaways, a good deli, good wine shop, 2 very good bakeries plus the usual off licences/newsagents/florists etc.

MrsGradyOldLady · 09/02/2016 18:45

Denby Dale is near to Wakefield but it is a bit "league of gentlemen". It's pretty but a bit too far from anywhere except Denby Dale.

They do a good pie though...

FatimaLovesBread · 09/02/2016 18:45

You could definitely get something nice for 1000pcm in the HD9 area. Then you'd drive through the HD8 Denby dale bit to commute to Wakefield. Hudds town centre is not always the best for shopping but if there's a need for bigger shops it takes me 40 mins over the tops to Trafford centre or Manchester city centre

Runningupthathill82 · 09/02/2016 18:54

Basically what BikeRunSki said. Huddersfield's smart villages such as Lindley, Holmfirth, Shepley etc are lovely. I also like Marsden and Slaithwaite very much, but maybe a teeny bit far for your commute.

At a push you could do Bradfield (Peak District village north of Sheffield) or Midhopestones to Wakey in 45minutes at rush hour. It's gorgeous around there, but the commute would involve the rather temperamental M1.

Saltaire and Hebden Bridge are both fantastic but the commutes would be a nightmare. Unless you're a fan of sitting in stationary Leeds-bound traffic on the M62.

bimandbam · 09/02/2016 18:57

Have a look at S63 area. You would get an awful lot for your money, has outstanding primaries as well as a very highly regarded comprehensive and is a very villagey feel to it. You want to look at the Manvers estate, a new build development.

Just about 45 mins to Wakefield. Rotherham and wath town centre are a bit rough and some of the villages around us are ex mining communities but where manvers is its nice. Nice lake ans lots of soft play options, fantastic garden centre 10 minutes away. Also clifton park in Rotherham is lovely and you are about 25 minutes from meadowhall shopping centre.

glenthebattleostrich · 09/02/2016 19:08

Woolley is lovely, as is West Bretton (has Yorkshire sculpture park). Woolley grange has loads of families. These are all about 25 mins from wakefield or ten minutes on the train.

Parts of North barnsley are good too.

Bunbaker · 09/02/2016 19:20

"What about Sheffield? It's about 45 minutes to Wakefield."

Ha ha ha ha. In the rush hour? You're having a laugh. I commute to Sheffield from junction 37 on the M1. There is no way a commute from Sheffield to Wakefield is going to take less than 45 minutes in the rush hour. And it is even worse in the evening. The queues southbound are horrendous.

"Realistically you want to be south of the M62 and should really reconsider living in Wakefield itself"

I agree with BarbaraofSeville. This is excellent advice. If you live north of the M62 you get caught up in the Leeds traffic

Waves to vickibee and Bikerunski and frikadela01.

There are loads of ofsted outstanding primaries in the Penistone area, and a good secondary school.

"At a push you could do Bradfield"

Not in under 45 minutes, and it gets cut off at the first flake of snow. I think Bradfield is very pretty but a bit remote for the OP.

Villages near Penistone within easy access to the M1 and easily commutable to Wakefield would be Silkstone, Silkstone Common, Hoylandswaine, Penistone itself, Cawthorne which is truly lovely, Ingbirchworth and Thurlstone.

SealSong · 09/02/2016 19:23

Hebden Bridge to Wakefield is a nightmare journey, trust me on this. Don't even think about it as a daily commute.

mincepieprivateeye · 09/02/2016 19:23

I was brought up in mirfield and visit due to family there but it isn't as nice as it was. I live in HD9 and have done for over twenty years, it's lovely, lots of open country, good schools and some nice small shops, it's last of the summer wine country here. Slaithwaite and surrounding villages are nice too. Huddersfield is the nearest town which is a bit grim in the main but the Kingsgate Centre isn't too bad. Someone up thread mentioned Lindley which does have nice shops and restaurants but I prefer it less built up, it really comes down to what you like yourself.

cupcakesarah · 09/02/2016 19:25

I do like Mirfield, it does have a couple of shops, but only enough to do a bit of necessity shopping, if you needed to get kids shoes etc, it'd be a trip to Huddersfield, but that's not far away

BikeRunSki · 09/02/2016 19:27

Denby Dale may not be near anywhere other than Denby Dale (and about 10 other villages within a couple of miles ), but it's not far from anywhere either. 15 mins to Holmfirth and Penistone; 25-30 to Huddersfield, Barnsley and Wakefield; 45 mins to a hour to Leeds and Sheffield, and Doncaster. MAnchester under an hour in light traffic, but not really a feasible daily commute at rush hour.

sandgrown · 09/02/2016 19:38

So homesick now. I grew up in HD3 before it became posh! ( now over the border but love going home) l love Huddersfield because you only have to drive for a few minutes to be in stunning countryside. Big shops fairly close in Leeds/Manchester and the people are so friendly Smile

Mairyhinge · 09/02/2016 19:52

Reading all this makes me think I must live in an alternative universe. Huddersfield has a few good parts but it's mostly shit! Thanks to the council.
20 minutes to Manchester Shock if you're lucky!! The msixtypoo is horrendous.
I live in HD3, sandgrown, when did it become posh? Must've missed that.
Think it's time I moved Hmm

MrsGradyOldLady · 09/02/2016 20:07

mairy you must have missed that free magazine that used to come round where (I shit you not) they actually described Lindley as "the knightsbridge of the north". I really wish I'd kept a copy because I know as I type it sounds like I'm lying. But honestly that's exactly how they described it.

FatimaLovesBread · 09/02/2016 20:13

Not sure where anyone has said it's 20 minutes from Huddersfield to Manchester?
I don't tend to use the m62 to get to Manchester, although I am closer to the greater Manchester border than central hudds or HD3.

I was coming back on to suggest Cawthorne or Silkstone. Although I've only ever really driven through them

MrsGradyOldLady · 09/02/2016 20:15

I don't have to do the M62 commute though. I set off after the school run so avoid traffic and it takes me 12 minutes to get to work in Halifax. Maybe if I did the M62 everyday I'd feel differently.

I was brought up in Lindley so I can see how it's changed. And it HAS become more "upmarket". I've been told by an estate agent that it's the most expensive postcode in Huddersfield. When we moved back from Holmfirth we had to pay quite a bit more for the same sized house whereas previously Holmfirth was more expensive.

It is still Huddersfield though. And I would prefer to live in York but work, family etc

Hoppinggreen · 09/02/2016 20:17

Can't believe how many of us are in HD3!!!
Sorry you don't dont like It here mairy I really do and Lindley IS pretty posh. There's some serious money there but it's "quiet" old money not flash like some places ( Ripponden) and everyone just seems to mix in together.
I suppose everyone has different experiences but for now it's got everything we want.

kateyjane · 09/02/2016 20:57

Also can't believe how many mumsnetters are in HD3. Nice to know.

I know Lindley isn't for everyone and I don't think I'd describe it as posh. I do think it's friendly though and very convenient for Leeds/Manchester etc.

I love taking the children to Greenhead Park and walking in the woods. The Lindley library is lovely as is the children's bookshop.

For a small place there is a really good variety of restaurants for different budgets.

Just realising that I sound like the person who described it as the 'Knightsbridge of the North'. I don't mean to be over effusive Grin I've lived here for two years and it is the nicest place I've lived.

Huddersfield town centre is absolutely rubbish though!

hemel07 · 09/02/2016 21:00

Wetherby? Maybe just over half hour to Wakefield.

AristotlesTrousers · 09/02/2016 21:10

Have you thought of the Selby area, even though it's North Yorskshire (though prob not Selby itself)? Sherburn in Elmet, just down the road, is okay (at least it was 5 years ago). It's a mile or two from the M1. I know of at least one soft play just outside Selby, and they have a v. active NCT Branch in the area with Bumps and Babies coffee mornings and and all sorts of other activities.
