Those pictures that people post, with a grinning child in front of all their birthday presents, carefully arranged - what's that about?

A) Look how lovable Harry is, in this bizarre materialistic world where stuff = love

B) This is how we're teaching Harry to brag about his possessions, because that's a healthy prop for his self esteem

C) We spent loads of money on Harry, which makes us better parents than you

D) Something else, that I'm too much of a cantankerous miserablist to get?

Yanbu it drives me crazy too, for me it tends to be Christmas, my Facebook page is either full of pictures of huge piles of presents or a persons child carefully positioned at the side of their huge pile of presents. I just laugh as these parents clearly think they are superior and better parents than the rest of who don't chose to post these type of self indulgent photos, but they're not.

I've done it a couple of times with DD, not to post online but to send to the person who gave her the gift if they couldn't be there to see her open it.
I'm too lazy/disorganised for thank you cards so this is my way of doing it.

I've got a 'friend' who does that. Really really bizarre, but very in keeping with her posts: 'out with the girlies, bubbles of course' with glass held showing huge diamond ring. I stay friends for amusement purposes. I do feel sorry for her kids. Stuff = Love.

The only time I take a photo of dc with presents, is to send to the giver and say thank you very much for the present, they love it. I would send it as a private message to that person. I have never seen what you're describing. It does sound bizarre.

It's somewhat uncouth I agree, but it doesn't mean that a) Harry is only shown love via presents b) the kid will be anything like that or c) anyone think they're better than you.

We don't spend nearly as much as many, aye it's more than a tangerine and some socks but we look miserly compared to some. But meh.

Some of my friends are younger Mums and I think what with growing up with social media it's just the done thing for some of them. Here's Harry and look how happy he is.

I've got a couple of people on my Facebook feed that do this. They also do the presents under the tree and photos of the school report #soproud. I should probably unfilled them but then I'd have no one to bitch about and inwardly mock.

I agree with potential

It's not possible to take all of that from one photo. People mostly don't purposefully post stuff just to make other people feel bad.

We just to have photo albums of us opening our presents on our birthday and Christmas. People don't have actual photo albums anymore, they have virtual ones. Lots of people I know "dump" their photos onto fb to store them so they can clear their phone memory.

I admit I always take pictures of the children with their christmas presents. I do this because I want a memory of christmas. I've never posted the pictures of facebook or if I have, I set them to private and linked my family who are 5000 miles away. Maybe they have absent family who would like to see the pictures? Memories are nice, wny else take pictures?

I do that but I set them to private so only I can view them or you can tag one or two people for them to see them as well. I do this because I consider my pictures private and because I don't think anyone else gives a shit how awesome I think my kids and dogs are.

I honestly don't get it, I nearly unfollowed a friend who was celebrating her 30th recently and she posted a picture of all the presents including cash.

WE took a picture like this at christmas.
it was to capture our DDs excited face and to show her other relatives around the world who couldn't be there that day.

It had nothing to do with any of the points listed in the opening post.

I don't get the FB angst. Who cares what other people post? Just hide or delete them if it's not to your taste

(And no I don't post photos of my DC with their gifts but I like nosing at what other parents have bought their DC!)

If we take present pics at Christmas we take one with their favourite gift. One year that meant the eldest with a new guitar and the youngest with a tiny plastic pug in the palm of his hand.

I usually only see the ones where the photo is of a pile of wrapped presents. Those ones I don't understand as you can't tell anything from wrapped boxes.

I have a couple of friends who post pictures of the pile of presents, no child, just the large pile of presents. One has 3 kids so we get it 3 times every year along with the triple size pile at Christmas. Bizarre!

I post a pic of the Xmas tree after santa's been and post it, as do lots of my friends. I don't spend loads at Xmas and my kids don't have a massive stack. I just love Xmas and birthdays and all the excitement! I don't see what's wrong with it. If it's showing off then surely most things on Fb are? Holiday snaps, restaurants etc? What's the difference?
