to have told off colleague for using disabled toilet

loopsylala · 04/02/2016 10:03

I have a disability and often can't get into the toilet at work as its being used by people changing clothes etc.

I mentioned it to hr who put a sign up but that's been removed.

Just caught someone using it. I asked if he was disabled, he said no but that the other toilets are sometimes full. I said that didn't matter, as he shouldn't be using the disabled toilet.

I'm worried now I will get into trouble. I've complained about this so many times and don't want to be seen as a trouble maker or that it's "my" toilet.

I hate confrontation and want to get on with my colleagues.

Could I have handled it better?

Yabu. You don't know what people have going on and why should you. My friend has a colostomy bag for life after nerve damage from surgery. Needs a bit more room and privacy than a gents loo generally allows for even in the cubicles. You'd never know by looking at him and if you confronted him he'd probably say he wasn't disabled too out of embarrassment. Why can't you wait a few minutes?.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 14:16

She does know what that guy had going on. Nothing.

Vaginaaa · 05/02/2016 14:19

Well, no. She knows he doesn't have anything he wanted to share with the random toilet police. Many posters have said they wouldn't disclose anything to a random.

VinoTintoPorFavor · 05/02/2016 14:19

No fanjo, she doesn't know. Just because he SAID he wasn't, doesn't make it so. As lots of pp have said, they'd rather be thought rude or inconsiderate than divulge to someone who has no business asking.

VinoTintoPorFavor · 05/02/2016 14:24

Speaking of toilet police - a friend came across a place in Asia that had different pricing for using a public toilet for urination or for a bowel movement. (That was the actual wording on the English part of the sign.) The toilet attendant would stand outside your cubicle, go in after you to check and flush, and charge accordingly. No shit.

It makes OP challenging her colleagues' toileting needs look quite tame by comparison.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 05/02/2016 14:30

No shit Grin

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 14:51

Yeah right ok

kali110 · 05/02/2016 14:53

fanjo no she had no idea, unless ofcourse she is his doctor, but i'm guessing not somehow...

Sometimes, just sometimes, life is too close to art .... from the HHGTTG ...

the fabulously beautiful planet Bethselamin is now so worried about the cumulative erosion by ten billion visiting tourists a year that any net imbalance between the amount you eat and the amount you excrete while on the planet is surgically removed from your body weight when you leave: so every time you go to the lavatory there it is vitally important to get a receipt.

kali110 · 05/02/2016 14:53

VinoTintoPorFavor what??Confused

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 14:56

Oh there's also the matter that the OP said on post 3 that she shouldn't have asked him. Yet folk are still banging on about that.

kali110 · 05/02/2016 15:01

Because it's
Part of her point. she's complaining that people are using the toilet who shouldn't, yet she doesn't actually know.

MrsJayy · 05/02/2016 15:07

The op is sick fed up her workmates using the toilet as a changing room toilet block probablytipped the op over the edge they as I said are all taking advantage of a spacious toilet if it was me and I had to paid i am in danger of an accident if it was being used as a private toilet i would be miffed too remember the op has already spoken to HR about this they took the sign down yet the minority is being called entitled because the majority cant wait but hey its a disabled bog thread lets all pile onthe op for being precious

GruntledOne · 05/02/2016 15:15

Adeles, the bit I quoted in my post came directly from yours. So why do you say I'm not responding to any of your posts?

Owllady · 05/02/2016 15:41

The original poster acknowledged very early on in the thread that she shouldn't have asked the man whether he was disabled. I imagine she well and truly gets the message now.

MrsJayy · 05/02/2016 15:50

Excuse my typos

Witchend · 05/02/2016 16:27

I think the office needs to have a rota of toilet using. She said about 60 people on her floor. Lets, say they're all there on average 5 hours. Then to be truly fair they can give them 5minutes in each toilet. Wink

Adeleslostbeehive · 05/02/2016 16:42

Gruntled I have made it clear all along that I was referring to the posters on this thread who believed those with disabilities should have a reserved loo that non disabled people should never use. We are agreeing that anyone could have desperate need for the loo and therefore use the disabled one. Not sure what you're getting at but I don't see what you're disagreeing with.

GruntledOne · 05/02/2016 16:47

She said they aren't generally all there at the same time, and the average office day is 8 hours. I make that 32 toilet minutes per person, more if people are going before they start the working day or as they leave. Should be more than enough.

Can you tell I'm trying to avoid doing some real work? Smile

GruntledOne · 05/02/2016 16:47

That last post was in response to Witchend.

Marynary · 05/02/2016 17:18

You shouldn't ask anyone if they are disabled. That was very rude. If your workplace is a private business, it is up to them to decide whether only disabled people can use the toilet and it is up to them to police it, not you.

KakiFruit · 05/02/2016 18:06

FanjofortheMammaries This thread is indeed great for updating spreadsheets. I hope everyone keeping a spreadsheet has put you down as a HDD - Hidden Disability Denier.

SauvignonBlanche · 05/02/2016 18:09

WTF are you on about KakiFruit? Confused

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/02/2016 18:12

LOL I am about the least hidden disability denying person on MN if not on earth
