DD's 18th birthday present puppy.

The name DD appears to be settling on is inoffensive, pleasant and frankly a bit dull. And I don't like it.

She has declined all of my suggestions. What can I do to get over it?

(Yes, I know this is a non-issue but I'll be hollaring this name accross the countryside for the next 16 years)

She's adorable!

I don't call DP by his first name either, OP, have always called him by his surname...like he's the butler.

Millie

Inoffensive but dull.

I just need to get over

Shock. When i saw the photo i thought "thats a mildred" your DD has picked the perfect name IMO.

Millie? It does suit her, really.

Could be worse. When we got our Cavalier, DS2 was very little and he suggested "Cutesywootsie" as a name. He's 20 now and his older brother and sisters still remind him of it.

I'm glad I'm not alone on the not-calling-husband-by-his-given-name thing. In 30 years, I never did. It was a horrible name; he hated it too.
Funnily enough, he never called me by my name either, now I come to think about it.

Our cats have pretty boring names (we inherited them, didn't give them the dull names) but I just jazz them up and call them daft nicknames all the time. You have some great ones here, Mildred, Great Aunt Mildred, Millicent Bystander is fab, Millipede, Princess Millicent Von Battenburg etc. I'd probably also say things like Million Squillion and Ed Miliband.

Give it a nickname. DH named our dog and I don't especilly like it, but it's fine cos he answers to his real name(rocky)plus various combinations of bog monster, big beast, fearsome, the dog, rockstar, rocky balboa, etc.

She's gorgeous and the name suits her.

Count your lucky stars with Millie, my DD named our kittens Princess and The Knight...she is 4yo though.

Like Dd she could be Emilia..Millie for short..what is Mumsnetters problem with the name Millie is it too pearl clutching common??

My brother (not even one of the children) gave us a kitten and told us it was called Edwin. Poor cat. It does answer(?) to 'Ed' and 'Get off the worktop' but I know he is called Edwin and it bugs me!

Yes I know it's a non issue
Well that's something we certainly agree on. It's not about your suggestions. It's not your dog, and your DH's name can't that bad, to the point that you refuse to call him it

Georgeous pup, BTW

Me too - hate DP's name, (dated, a bit common,a bit ridiculous). Hardly ever use it. Though to be fair my babies were called everything but their names when they were small. Surprised they grew up knowing their names at all!

Gorgeous dog! I think you just need to get over it tbh! It's her dog, she's an adult and there's not much you can do about it. Rather it be her dog than her child ;)

I can't imagine yelling Hepzibah in public, and I have a dog named Catkins (named by children) so I have quite a high embarrassment threshold.

Your name suggestions are awful. Your daughter's choice is nice.

A name you're hollering should end in an 'ie' or a 'y', so you can let it go on as long as you still have breath Smile

I think she looks like a Ruby, personally.

We have lovebirds called Will and Grace. We never call them that, they're collectively known as the Peedles or the Wiffles or something similar.

That is a gorgeous dog.

BastardCat is known by various names, several of which bear sod all resemblance to the one he came with. And both of my kids answer to Charlie Mouse. Neither of them are called Charlie.

You can totally get away with never shouting its name. When I shout my dogs I just shout 'Come on!' or something similar. Or you could get a whistle.

I call my dogs a million names other than their actual names. Smelly pants, Shit breath and Stinker are current faves.

DP calls my darling dog Fuzzy Fucker. He doesn't seem to mind!

I need to know these husbands' names and how you avoid using them. Do you have pet names like Snookums?

My dog's name is Honey, I mainly call her Mrs Biffers.

Katenka - I think you have missed the fact that the OP is partly poking fun at herself for caring so much about the dog's name. Easy to miss, especially if you do have aspergers.

Which of course goes on to your other point - you know not every person with aspergers has exactly the same coping and life skills? It is great that you were able to become independent at 19, many 18 year olds with Aspergers show no signs that they will ever be ready to look after themselves. I have one myself who simply couldn't cope, although of course this may change in years to come...

I don't like my husbands name and have avoided calling him it for 20 years.

Grin

I have a Milly dog. It is a dull name to be fair.

I do enjoy shouting it in parks and seeing 2 dogs and 3 little girls turn around to see who is shouting for them though Grin

Though she has many nicknames. And her real name is Lady Camilla obviously.

I totally get you.

My DD (with LDs) is a goth, her 'user names' etc are creative.

We got an abandoned feral, beautiful black silky kitten, she's picked a name that is run of the mill, we expected Luna or Megumi.

I call her "pissy Arse" most of the time (we've had toilet issues).

I've always had rescue dogs and they respond as well to nicknames as their own name. Similar to grandchildren.

She could be 'Nanny's little Mimi", or something.

Yes, I am the cats Nanny.
