DD's 18th birthday present puppy.

The name DD appears to be settling on is inoffensive, pleasant and frankly a bit dull. And I don't like it.

She has declined all of my suggestions. What can I do to get over it?

(Yes, I know this is a non-issue but I'll be hollaring this name accross the countryside for the next 16 years)

I have avoided calling him it for 20 years

Grin

Do you call him a different name entirely Confused?

Oh Millie, yeah I see your point. What was your choice out of interest

Millie is cute. What were your names?

My dd wants to call the rescue cat we are hopefully getting 'Lollipop'. This is a 10 year old cat with a no teeth. Seems a bit cutesie to me, but we shall see...hoping she will change her mind on it. Thinking about it, maybe Lollipop is good for a cat with no teeth!

I knew it would be Millie as soon as I opened the thread.

That puppy is absolutely gorgeous and I imagine a mark of your DD reaching 18 and now being a adult blah blah. It's right that she names the dog and in a few weeks you'll love it I'm sure.

How is the puppy settling in?

Just extend it to Miss Millie Von Borington

Pets never, ever end up being called the name they were originally given,so stop worrying. You'll end up calling her Magnificent Millicent the Sausage Princess, or some diminutive thereof that isn't Millie.

It's a perfectly nice name and when either of you call it don't be surprised when hordes of little girls answer as Millie the dog bounds off into the distance

I do think you should get over it. It's the same name a pair of small girls I know gave their own dachshund about six years ago. Millie was the most beautiful name they could imagine. To them, the name represented the ultimate in perfection -- a popular name, a feminine name, a name for a dog they might one day bedeck in a pink collar with a ribbon attached, and who might wear a little pink dog raincoat and booties. Perhaps your DD has the same thing going on.

Try to appreciate the feeling behind her choice and respect that. Maybe as practice you could work on saying your DH's name too unless you have found a nickname or abbreviation that he loves.

Millie is ok though. There's a dog just like yours that I see most days in our park - she's called Margot which I think is rather fabulous!

Millie is ok, I'm sure you'll get used to it.

What are your suggestions?

TotalConfucius · 30/01/2016 09:13

You'll have to suck it up and learn to like it. Or just call her Mils or something.
I have one of those 'probably always live at home' DC a few years older than yours and we have a Pongo in the house. It's not even a dog. It's the most un-Pongo-like pet you could imagine. Stupid name.
But on the upside you have a baby Dachsy in the house!

I wanted to call DD Agatha, lovely name. No one else agreed with me.

Oh xposted.

I can understand why your DD doesn't like your names. although I love them.

My favourite puppy name is Mabel.

Report
Gruach · 30/01/2016 09:15

Well ... Obviously your DD is only using the diminutive form because the lovely puppy is tiny. You know it's really Countess Millicent of Crochet Castle (or whatever) When the dog grows up and wants to be taken seriously in the big wide world it will insist on being called by it's full name.

Poor cat but I pissed myself laughing at this.

OP, I admit the name doesn't suit the dog but it's still sweet. I think it's one you have suck up I'm afraid.

Is this serious?

She is old enough to have a dog, but not picks it's name.

I suggest you just get over it.

Wtf is 'my suggestions were better' all about?

Is this how you generally parent?

I have aspergers, I have a family of my own and moved out at 19.

I really like it! Doesn't go with our surname but that's not such an issue for a dog :-) As a child we had a rescue dog with a rubbish name but we couldn't really change it. You get used to it.

SoupDragon · 30/01/2016 09:18

You would prefer to holler Hepzibah! across the park rather than Millie? Seriously?!

Leave it as Millie. It is fine.

Report

It's Millicent Bystander! Millie for short.
