Aibu to put a duvet in the washing machine?

Yes, me and the washing machine saga again.
Went to look at washers in John Lewis this evening.
Said I wanted one with large aperture, to make it easier to get my duvet in. Got quite a lecture from the salesman about not laundering duvets. WTF?
I often wash my summer duvet, big blankets, throws etc, used to wash the kids duvets, too, cos, well, kids!
DH and I were as I've only been doing laundry for 40 years.
When we left the shop dh said 'You've got to tell your mumsthing people about this'

I put duvets in the washing machine. It's a bit of a squash !!

So do I. It's fine.

When our cat pooed on our king size duvet (fun times ) I washed it in the biggest machine at the launderette because I worried it was too big for our washing machine at home. I used non-bio detergent because it's a feather/down duvet. It turned out fine.

I've washed pillows and single duvets in the machine at home.

I wouldn't put a high tog kingsize duvet in mine but if the duvet fits easily in the drum I would. I've washed dd's single duvet loads and our lightweight duvet too.

Maybe you could go back to John Lewis, get one of the duvets they sell, and show him the care label?!

I would love to put mine in the wm but it's a double duvet and it doesn't bloody fit. And all our covers are double so we're stuck with the size grr.
Unless it's feather I think they are all washable.

We use the massive one at the laundrette. and we wash pillows (Man from JL screams and faints)

My washer has a duvet programme. I have washed both feather and fibre filled duvets and they have all been fine.

We wash duvets and pillows in our big american top loader (you don't really get duvet covers here and I can't be bothered with those under sheet things). Doesn't hurt the machine at all, although the duvet stuffing does seem to thin out a bit after a while.

Oh didn't know feathers are fine as well. Had a bad experience with a feather pillow.

ursus you have to use non bio detergent and a low temperature (I googled it before washing my feather/down duvet... Think I found the answer on MN!)

I wash pillows but send the duvets to a commercial laundrette as I think they get wahed more effectively in a bigger machine, and get dried properly which in the current weather would be a big concern. Same for sleeping bags.
I'm idle so rarely bother to take them though

I've always washed mine in a washing machine! But you do have to be careful not to overload if you don't have a big, heavy duty one.

Most of the time the advice is to take it to the (shockingly expensive) dry cleaners isn't it?

I wash my doubles and they're feather too. A newfound respect for my washing machine is dawning.

Didn't buy my machine in John Lewis though, which explains why mine isn't too posh to wash Duvets.

Well, yeah, that's why I wanted a big, heavy duty one...
He was so bloody condescending - he was lucky dh was with me, or I'd have chewed him out. As it was, I just said 'well, I wash my duvet' and gave him 'the look'
I thought you'd be amused at how he refers to us!

I worked at a dry-cleaners for several years and we always sent duvets away to our laundry - the only exception I can remember is a silk duvet, and that was a pain in the arse because we had to air it for ages. It's quite dangerous to dry-clean duvets, I was told, as if you don't air it thoroughly then you'll be breathing in the fumes all night. Strange advice from salesman.

Two of the duvets in this house fit in my machine so I can and do machine wash them at home.

The two that don't fit are taken to the launderette, usually every spring, and washed in one of their very large machines.

My washing machine has a setting that says "duvets" on it so it's definitely ok.

I don't wish the king size down one though, in case it's too heavy. I bring that one to the laundry. I believe that even dry-cleaners send duvets to laundries as they're not meant to get dry-cleaning chemicals into them.

D'oh - just saw RDW's post

I wash the cotton and syntetic duvets in the washing machine. They do the job fin during the warmer times of the year. But I have a dawn duvet and I send it to the fry cleaning. I witnessed too many winter coats loosing their warmth after a wash and I can't sleep if I'm cold.

Good to know it needs to be aired after dry cleaning, I always thaught the funny smell was normal!
