Was at play group today and was talking to another mum about our respective year 11 kids

I was talking about how much it's cost me for a suit so did could attend various interviews at collages and apperterships ect

She then said to me I wouldn't bother if I were you I am sending mine in jeans

I not sure what school her child attends but my son have had it drummed into them that it's not just about your grades it's about how you preset at the interviews and espically the aperntership interviews

They also have been told they will look at attendance and behaviour and outside interests

And they have been told if all things being equal grades that it if they only thing that sets you apart is how well turned out you are then that can't be a bad thing and it may give you the edge he's wanting to do engineering and it's very competitive

And to be honest even if ds hadn't been told this by the school I would want him to be smart and show to the interviewers that he takes his education seriously

Not sure if they would think that if you turned up in jeans and Air Force ones

IMO a suit is pretty OTT for a college interview. I'm sure others will feel differently though.

My dc's went to college interviews in their school uniform.

How do you know it's not a pair of black jeans and a formal shirt?

My DDS went to college interview in black Jean s and smart tops job interview s were a bit different I guess its each to their own smart doesn't always mean a suit

He also has apperntship interviews and tbh they are pretty much job interviews

A suit for a college interview is way over the top. My DDs just went in school uniform.

I think it depends what they want to do - business, marketing, related subj prob suit but media and fashion something else

Neither of you are wrong. But you don't have to spend a fortune on a suit at that age, apprenticeship or not. A smart pair of strides and a nice shirt does.

Two good friends of mine are 6th form teachers. They do college application interviews every year, and every year they get kids turning up in jeans and trainers. It is really frowned upon. All they need to do is wear school uniform. But they also wouldn't say a suit was over the top, that would be fine too. But smart school uniform is perfectly acceptable.

Sadly my son is 6 ft 3 so buying a suit even just a jacket that will fit is a pipe dream even his shoes I am having to order in 12:5

In that case I'd let him choose. Always best to feel happy and comfortable in interview situations (within reason of course!).

I went for a higher apprenticeship interview for a high-tech engineering company and can remember feeling like an idiot in my primark jeans and black cardigan and shoes falling off my feet, next to suits and briefcases.

I got the job because I showed a real interest and passion for engineering, and because my confidence speaks louder than my clothes.

Nowadays I wouldn't dream of going for an interview looking anything less than highly polished.. But most people interviewing teenagers are smart enough to know that how much money their parents spend clothing them is NOT a true reflection of the candidates character.

The 6formers at my sons school have to dress smartly so This is how they all dresss he likes this look a lot

I no many go in there school uniform but tbh because he's so massive is ill fitting and he looks a bit scuffy in to he's jacket is very short in the arms but they insist they were the school blazer

Fwiw dds school has a sixth for where they have to wear suits. None look like that. But as long as he is comfortable that's fine.
