..but you aren't a teacher, what do you do?

Are there any jobs that fit in school hours and holidays that aren't in schools?

------------

Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to finding a job that will allow you to work within school hours. We hope it's helpful!

Office admin :)

Cary2012 · 01/11/2016 21:28

Bit baffled by this.

I'm a teacher and work 12 hour days and either all Saturday or Sunday. Are you saying I should only be doing six hour days like the students?

Damn, that's why I'm so knackered then!

EatSleepTeachRepeat · 01/11/2016 21:29

LOL at teachers working school hours.

My TAs work 8:30-4:30 and I am in before they arrive and after they leave.

Perhaps lunchtime supervisor? Or a reduced hours contract somewhere?

Wineloffa · 01/11/2016 21:31

Local government. I work 18 hours a week over 5 mornings. It's not term-time only though so I do have to sort childcare for school holidays.

Cary2012 · 01/11/2016 21:35

Our TAs are 8.30 to 3.30, paid six hours a day.

Get just above the minimum wage.
Qualified to NVQ 3 or equiv.
Worth their weight in gold.

Cowscockwithonions · 01/11/2016 21:35

I work in a school kitchen, it's 16 hours a week, I'm just an assistant, the other assistant works 24 hours a week.

I am a teacher- I do Thurs/Fri in one school, for which I use breakfast and after school club for DD. I leave at 3.15 on a Friday though.
The other 3 days I teach my specialism on a self employed basis - I do 9.30 til 12 and 1-2.45 across 6 different (nearby) schools.

I love it- finally found my balance!

AliceMum09 · 01/11/2016 21:54

Tumble Tots - term-time only and if the venue is reasonably close to your children's school (within 1/2 hour drive) it should work out that you can do school drop-off and pick up.

WetsTheFinger · 01/11/2016 21:54

I'm a vet, and a partner in my practice so I choose my hours.

WetsTheFinger · 01/11/2016 21:55

These threads always turn into a 'teachers work longer and harder than anyone else' contest Wink

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 01/11/2016 21:58

To everyone who says 'civil servant' - can you give any more details? Local/central government, what department. What do civil servants actually do

I'd love to be one...once I figure out what it means!

NickyEds · 01/11/2016 22:09

Someone resurrected my thread!

Cary My sister is a teacher and works silly hours....which is why the op asks for people who work school hours and are not teachers. I wanted jobs that are school students hours.

Still think it's really only school support staff, pre school practitioners and the mysterious 'civil servants' DustOff!

Oh, this is a zombie thread!

Came on to say I'm a school science technician, 30 hours a week, 8.30 - 3.30 but paid a pittance.

DullUserName · 02/11/2016 00:13

I'm a former teacher and delight in my new truly term-time school-hours job.:-)
I'm in school outreach for industry, getting children enthused about our subject in primaries and giving careers advice in secondaries.

Education here too. And the living wage. [budgetwine] [cheapbrew] [noflowers]

We're about to advertise an office-based admin assistant job (London W10) which will be 2-3 days a week, hours to fit with school run and no working during school holidays. Before we do, I'd like to ask if people prefer to be paid by the hour for the work they actually do, or salaried (with associated benefits such as pension, etc). As a small employer we can afford to pay more by the hour than as a salary, but we'd love some feedback before we post! Many thanks.
