..but you aren't a teacher, what do you do?

Are there any jobs that fit in school hours and holidays that aren't in schools?

------------

Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to finding a job that will allow you to work within school hours. We hope it's helpful!

I'm an office manager. 9am - 3pm Mon-Fri.

SuburbanRhonda · 27/01/2016 18:26

Home School Link Worker - in a school but school hours only. I love it Smile

TheSnowFairy · 27/01/2016 18:30

I'm a Marketing Manager for a school, 9.30-3 term time only.

It takes away the stress of childcare during holidays and after school, and it's a great balance between work and home.

siblingrevelryagain · 27/01/2016 20:31

I work in a school office, after 8 years as a SAHM ( good career prior to DC).

9-3 every day, all the holidays off. Shit pay and low status compared to previous job but enables me to have loads of time with kids and a holiday roughly every 6 weeks!

I got it by helping out and being see as reliable by my children's school, so they thought of me when a neighbouring school had a vacancy (school secretaries are very well connected and listened to!)

Johnny5isAlive · 27/01/2016 20:37

IT programmer for global bank

Lol at teachers working school hours!

I work 3 days a.week and on my payslip it says 19.5 hours. On an average week I do 30 hours in the school building, plus I probably do 5 or 6 hours a week out of school at least as well.

This is all fine, its part.of the job and I know other people do unpaid overtime in other jobs as well, its not exclusive to teaching.

But when the old 'teachers work school hours' thing comes out, it does make me go AAAARRRGGGHHH!

LillyBugg · 27/01/2016 20:56

I agree with the PP that said there are lots of school based jobs which are not teaching jobs. I work in Human Resources in a school. We employ...cleaners, caterers, site staff, administrative staff, finance staff, all of which have the opportunity to work school hours.

Not sure why the thread is turning into a 'teachers work way more than school hours' when that was really not what the OP was asking.

I know, I know, I probably shouldn't have posted the above. I have just had it already several times from different people this week about teachers only working school hours, holidays etc and it does just get a bit annoying!

RaskolnikovsGarret · 27/01/2016 21:06

How do companies cope if people work term time hours? Who covers the holidays? Sounds great, but there's no way my organisation could run like that.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 27/01/2016 21:29

Sorry I misunderstood. I do school hours each day, but don't have school hols off.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 27/01/2016 21:30

The company I work for is a supplier to educational establishments. A lot of the sales staff work term time only and the company seems ok with that as school hols are a very quiet time for them.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 27/01/2016 21:33

Interesting. I guess many companies just can't work like that. In my place it just wouldn't be possible. Or it would be unfair and place a huge workload on those remaining.

Wardrobespierre · 27/01/2016 21:36

I work for a v family friendly charity. I can pick and choose when I work so fit in my contracted hours between 9.30 and 3.00, Mon-Fri according to festivals, plays, concerts etc.

I also write and copy edit in my free time.

Titsywoo · 27/01/2016 21:39

I work as a bookkeeper for a charity. As long as I do a certain amount of hours a week they don't mind when I work. I do work in the holidays but just do two full days then and am very lucky that my mum and Mil have the dc one day each.

moodyblues · 27/01/2016 21:44

I work in a restaurant kitchen from 9-3 three days a week. Have managed to get half term off but dh has done a few and we managed between us in summer hols.

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 27/01/2016 21:45

I work in customer services and one of only a few in our large office to have the 9.30-2.30 shift.

fakenamefornow · 27/01/2016 21:47

Health and Safety inspector.

Based at home but out visiting employers most of the time. Hours 9 - 3.30 term time only. I love it.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 27/01/2016 21:49

I went freelance last year so I can to some extent choose my hours. However when I'm busy this can mean a 9-3 stint in the office, pick up DC, cook tea, then do another couple of hours when they've gone to bed.

ohtheholidays · 27/01/2016 21:49

Worked part time teaching.

Curiousrugbymum · 27/01/2016 21:59

I work for one of the big banks as a project manager, work 28 hours (4 days) in term time and 21 (3days) in holidays. Super flexible, work from home when I want and can mix the hours up across days /evenings/ early mornings as I have colleagues in India .

Financial services get a bad rap, but my employer has been brilliant. Lots of us on various dynamic working arrangements. All that matters is I get my job done - exactly how, where and when I work is less important, I am trusted. I do show willing too e,g moving days around for big meetings.

TheLittleFoxes · 27/01/2016 22:01

I'm an administrator for a charity. Part time but I don't get time off during holidays except standard annual leave.

MrsJamin · 27/01/2016 22:13

I work for a small tech company in marketing / product management, there's a bunch of us mums who work flexibly

CalleighDoodle · 27/01/2016 22:53

I used to work at Gregs the Bakers and we had part time staff who only worked term time. Students picked up hours in school holidays so it worked fine.

tibbawyrots · 27/01/2016 22:59

was a civil servant 9-2:30 (school was right next to the office)
and term time only. Brilliant!

tassisssss · 27/01/2016 23:01

I have several friends who have negotiated for school hours...eg solicitors office, psychologist, university admin.

FWIW teachers while being fantastic for holidays rarely get to work primary school hours (i.e. I have non teacher friends who can drop and pick up their kids from school in a way us teachers cannot).
