..but you aren't a teacher, what do you do?

Are there any jobs that fit in school hours and holidays that aren't in schools?

------------

Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to finding a job that will allow you to work within school hours. We hope it's helpful!

I run an online and actual shop from 10am to 4pm. At the weekends I have a shop manager in and in the holidays I split between staff cover and my parents helping out. In the summer, I rely on a short term au pair to help out. It's taken about 3 years to get this balance but it works nicely and it means I can take my DD to school every day.

I'm a teacher and I'd love to work school hours. I'll be in for at least 3 full days in Feb half term and I'm also in today.

WhatamessIgotinto · 30/01/2016 07:36

I'm a TA so term time only. I work from 8.45 til 3.30.

Tobeemoree · 30/01/2016 12:30

Not quite school hours, but I work as an online picker and average 24/5 hours a week. The hours are a little unsociable at 4am to 10am, but I do 5 days one week and 3 the next, with every other weekend off. The pay isn't great but there is an element of unsociable hours pay too.

I've just been offered a permanent contract having started as a Christmas temp, and this covers childcare between us perfectly. DH drops daughter to school and I collect her every day. He also works shifts but we can cover everything between us.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off for a snooze Grin

pollylovespie · 30/01/2016 13:22

My last job was as a college tutor, which was part time term time. Perfect.

JizzyStradlin · 30/01/2016 13:28

What's an online picker?

ElizabethG81 · 30/01/2016 15:34

It's someone who selects the shopping for online orders in supermarkets.

Notimefortossers · 30/01/2016 15:57

I work in marketing, but I work for my mum so basically come and go as I please! She doesn't mind when I work as long as I get my hours in, and I'm only part time too.
Generally I go in two days a week, school hours and do 4 hours from home. On one day my friend has my 1 year old and on the other my husband is off so it works in holidays too

JizzyStradlin · 30/01/2016 17:06

Cheers elizabeth.

Fishinminepuddle · 30/01/2016 17:12

cleaner (smile) I work for several families, always during school hours. I am planning to employ other people soon as demand is high.

I am a Cycling Instructor teaching 'Bikeability' (Cycling Proficiency to those a bit older!) which fits in with school hours & holidays.
I am employed by our local council and work on a Zero Hours contract (which suits me fine) teaching Year 6 kids how to cycle safely on the roads.
Some weeks I only work a couple of days, other weeks I work Mon - Fri from 9am until 2.45 / 3pm.
Sometimes I have to ask friends to help out to drop off the kids if I'm working at a school that takes me a while to cycle to, but it's great when I'm working at schools that are just down the road.
I used to work in an office environment, so it's a real change, but I enjoy working outdoors, whatever the weather..!

I would love to run my own business and would employ majority part timers. Mums or dads. Part time r always more productive. Only snag is I wouldn't know what to do. I currently work 3. 5 days over 5 finishing early on 3 days. In holidays work 2 long days.

LittleWingSoul · 01/11/2016 20:30

University - student services. Reading week and half term don't always match up (2 weeks a year) but have Xmas, easter and long summer off.

JustDanceAddict · 01/11/2016 20:40

I do an administrative job in a school. Money is really crap as you obv not paid for all those weeks you're not there!!

Afternoondelights · 01/11/2016 20:51

School secretary, before that had my own business baking from home

Oblomov16 · 01/11/2016 20:58

Accounts. Chose my days and hours. Works well.

FranklyMeDeer · 01/11/2016 21:01

I work in a school but I'm not a teacher. Some support staff work term time only, some don't. I don't, although my holidays aren't always exactly the same as dc's, it's certainly much easier than having to juggle all the school holidays, it's only the odd day here and there that I need to find childcare for.

KayJBee · 01/11/2016 21:09

Teacher definitely do not work school hours, however there are loads of other jobs in school that can be school hours.

I work part time term time only in an admin role in a school. The school hours are great (my kids do breakfast club a couple of times a week but I do all pickups) but for me the real benefit is term time only. If I had to pay childcare for 3 children during the holidays it probably wouldn't be worth my while working.

Jobs in schools that aren't class teaching - admin, finance, IT, catering, cleaning, premises, maintenance, technicians, teaching assistants, pastoral, interventions, school nurse, councillors, training, careers advice, the list goes on. A big school will have most of those, many term time only or school hours if you wanted them to be.

thatdearoctopus · 01/11/2016 21:21

Definitely not school hours. I began work at 10 to 8 this morning, had no break or lunchtime, came home at 5 ish (early for me) and carried on working at about 5.30. Ate at my laptop and am still going now. Tomorrow will be similar, and there's a Parents' Evening, so won't leave school until around 8.30pm.
I acknowledge that these are not particularly unusual hours for many people, but it's worth mentioning, just to redress the balance for all those who think we bugger off home at 3.30 to paint our nails and watch Neighbours.
It really isn't a family-friendly job - although I admit the (unpaid) holidays are a massive bonus if you have kids.

Thirtyrock39 · 01/11/2016 21:22

Work in school nursing

chocolatecheesecake · 01/11/2016 21:22

A friend of mine is an accountant working four school days a week. Uses breakfast club and has to manage holiday childcare but means she's got more time for after school activities and homework support.

Roseformeplease · 01/11/2016 21:23

DH is School science Technician.
