To say that 'Beau' is not a girls' name?

Over the past few months, I've come across an increasing number of baby girls named 'Beau.'

Am I wrong on assuming that this is French in origin, meaning 'handsome?' (or the masculine form of beautiful). Surely Belle is then the feminine form?

One was even spelt Beaux. This is the plural, right? The X doesn't make it feminine?!

Idk, maybe people don't really focus on definitions of names. Just found it a bit odd that it's becoming a bit of a trend.

Lessthan

It's Reese, which is how the surname is commonly spelled and Reese Witherspoon's name is actually Joan.

So no.

liz70 · 24/01/2016 21:34

"Haven't met anyone who spells Rhys as Reece for a first name either, thank god."

(As a male name) there's Reece Shearsmith. Also a Reece (boy) in DD3's P2 class. I like it as a boy's name, spelled that way. If not Welsh then I think it's a bit daft to spell it "Rhys".

peckforton · 24/01/2016 21:55

As a teacher Oi have seen loads of Reeces and Lewis spelled Louis.

Thanks 👍

On the other hand... Shirley was a boys name originally until relatively recently (Victorian times) there was a female character in a book called Shirley (and the whole point was her parents wanted a boy so gave her a boys name) and it swapped genders. Things change surely (and don't call me Shirley Wink )

QueenBee52 · 16/08/2021 00:32

avamiah · 16/08/2021 00:33

I had a male Rottweiler 16 years ago and he was just beautiful and I named him Beau.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 16/08/2021 00:34

Short for Isabeau which is French and Hebrew.

Sorka · 16/08/2021 01:02

It’s a dreadful name. Not only is it horrible and spelt incorrectly but the poor kid will spend their life being given things covered in tatty bows. I wonder how many of them will change their name as soon as they can?

Sorka · 16/08/2021 01:04

Just spotted the date of this thread

Emmylouisa · 16/08/2021 01:08

I like it but spelt Bo rather than Beau.

WaterIsBest · 16/08/2021 01:10

This thread is 5 years old 😂

owlbethere · 16/08/2021 01:18

It means handsome. Women can be handsome. Same as boys can be pretty/beautiful.
Can’t see the issue.

owlbethere · 16/08/2021 01:19

Oh ffs. Zombie. Blush

Mamanyt · 16/08/2021 01:21

Um, yeah. Beau is masculine, and Beaux is the plural. In this case, two Beaux does not make a Belle, any more than two wrongs make a right (although three LEFTS do make a right, to be perfectly fair).

PrincessNutella · 16/08/2021 04:59

WTF just no

PrincessNutella · 16/08/2021 05:03

Are they going to name their next daughters Hunky and Dapper?

iloveeverykindofcat · 16/08/2021 05:53

Beau is an excellent name for a standard poodle or similar large puppet-like dog.

Shirley not! 😱
SpeakingFranglais · 16/08/2021 06:13

@Doublebubblebubble

Beau is a boys name - Bo is the girls varient (I think Ulrika Johnsson has a little girl called Bo spelled this way) Bo does remind me of B.o though when written down. I like Beau for a boy though.
Ulrika called her DD Bo after her dad though who passed away quite young.
clary · 16/08/2021 06:46

I taught a girl called Beau. I agree, it's a man's name - Beau Bridges, Beau Brummell. I taught her French which made it even more odd.

That said, there seems to be a trend for calling girls by names associated more with boys - I taught Bailey, Levi, Asher, Jamie - all girls.

clary · 16/08/2021 06:47

oooh ZOMBIE thread! sorry

dworky · 16/08/2021 06:50

It's just an alternate spelling of Bo, what's the problem?

SofiaMichelle · 16/08/2021 06:51
