To say that 'Beau' is not a girls' name?

mrsb26 · 21/01/2016 16:12

Over the past few months, I've come across an increasing number of baby girls named 'Beau.'

Am I wrong on assuming that this is French in origin, meaning 'handsome?' (or the masculine form of beautiful). Surely Belle is then the feminine form?

One was even spelt Beaux. This is the plural, right? The X doesn't make it feminine?!

Idk, maybe people don't really focus on definitions of names. Just found it a bit odd that it's becoming a bit of a trend.

All the Beau and Bo's I've met have been boys/men. It's a male name.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/01/2016 17:00

x2

I think Bo is a unisex Scandinavian name, rather than being related to Beau.

Doublebubblebubble · 21/01/2016 17:00

Variant I mean - gahhhdoi!

pictish · 21/01/2016 17:01

Tell that to Bo Dereck.

HighwayDragon1 · 21/01/2016 17:02

Beau said b-oh?

Gobbolino6 · 21/01/2016 17:04

It's an attractive name, but I'd never use it for a girl for the reason you describe. YANBU.

RubyRoseViolet · 21/01/2016 17:04

I know a girl and a boy called Beau. I think it's lovely either way. I really can't see why it matters!

OfaFrenchmind2 · 21/01/2016 17:06

Beau is French for beautiful, but don't English-speaker use it also to design a boyfriend, as in "her beau is a good lad."?
Anyway, YANBU OP. It's not really pretty.

Hushabyelullaby · 21/01/2016 17:07

I've not read the thread so am not sure of what other responses you have had, but I understood Beau (don't it mean male beauty or handsome man?) to be for boys and Bo for girls. I used to work with a woman called Bo and she'd be late 40's now.

DotForShort · 21/01/2016 17:08

I think it's a bit odd to name a girl Beau. I can't get too worked up about it though. If I were to start a list of the names that I think are a bit odd, I would be writing for a very, very long time. Grin

CakeFail · 21/01/2016 17:08

I agree with you re the direct translation from French but I quite like it. It's kind of cool and tom-boyish. I also like 'boys' names for girls.

Pigeonpost · 21/01/2016 17:09

I know of a little girl called what I thought was Beau (it's certainly pronounced that way) but she's actually called Bou. Makes my brain hurt trying to work out the logic...

Hushabyelullaby · 21/01/2016 17:10

don't?? Shock sorry, I meant doesn't

Nassau · 21/01/2016 17:10

Bó is cow in Irish.

Really does depend on the language, doesn't it! Grin

CadburysTastesVileNow · 21/01/2016 17:14

Bo is actually a male name (Scandinavian)

BarbarianMum · 21/01/2016 17:14

I knew a little girl called Michael - after Princess Michael of Kent.

Strange, but true.

TheCatsMeow · 21/01/2016 17:16

It looks girly, even though it's not so I can understand why

Hedgehogsdontbite · 21/01/2016 17:16

Bo is a boy's name in Sweden as far as I know (been here 10 years).

YouthHostellingWithChrisEubank · 21/01/2016 17:17

I like it. Can't get worked up about what people call their kids tbh, unless it's Gonorrhea or Satan.

Marion used to be a man's name, didn't it? Evelyn too.

Hedgehogsdontbite · 21/01/2016 17:19

I've just checked as I have nothing better to do. There are currently 89007 males in Sweden named Bo and 142 females.

TheSnowFairy · 21/01/2016 17:27

There is a Bo (female) in DD's class.

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/01/2016 17:28

I don't like it. But don't like it any more on a boy than a girl.

iciclewinter · 21/01/2016 17:29

Bo can be short for Bonita. Reminds me of Little Bo Peep though!

Sadik · 21/01/2016 17:30

Not quite the same, but Isabeau of Bavaria was around in the 14th Century. (I googled the name when I ran into an Isabeau and thought ??? )

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/01/2016 17:32

Bo Derek is actually called Mary.
