open tins of food in the fridge?

I thought there was a reason you're supposed to decant them so I obediently do, I can't remember what the reason is though.

I'm very relaxed in the whole food hygiene and safety world but I almost always put half cans in bowls or tubs, because open tins are supposed to be bad for some reason and they might get knocked over and then the fridge would need cleaning and that wouldn't do at all, it gets cleaned once a year whether it needs it or not.

A long time ago open tins would oxidise and poison you. But not anymore.

I decant tinned tomatoes, beans etc into an empty jam jar.
In my experience they keep much longer that way. If left in tins they go moldy quite easily.

That said I'd leave them in the tins for a couple days if I'm lazy...not a big deal

I decant into bowls because cling film doesn't work on tins and I'd much rather they were covered.

Personally I don't. I have Tupperware and use it for any leftovers from tins.

I decant into Tupperware tubs, but actually lazy me has half a tin a of beans in the can sitting in the fridge - and I think this everytime I look at it Confused

I still have the plastic lids you get on tubes of certain types of crunchy oat biscuit.

They fit tins perfectly.

I think you can get cat food lids too. But I don't have a cat but do have a Hobnob eating DH Smile

I have a friend who comes round for a cuppa once a week and completely freaks out every time she sees an open tin in my fridge. Spends 5 mins each time telling me how it's really bad and I shouldn't do it.....I still always do Grin

I'd put it into a plastic Tupperware type thing. Hate half full tins in the fridge.

Do it all the time. Yes there is a sound reason why you should decant and when my DD briefly worked in the care industry she explained why (the home carers HAD to decant client's opened food into covered containers - it is part of their H&S procedures). But I don't. It's usually beans that get used within days. Or dog food. Ditto.

I am extremely relaxed about food hygiene. Probably something to do a) growing up on a farm and b) having horses. I know I ought to wash my hands before raiding the biscuits people bring to the stables, but I only ever do that if I have been handling wormers/feed supplements. Grin

Tin or aluminium... and they don't really cause problems like that any more. Mainly because many tins of acidic food, where this transfer is more likely to happen, have a thin coating of plastic on the inside of the tin.

since when did tins not oxidize in the fridge?
I was taught at school and home never to put opened tins in the fridge.

All food should be covered when in the fridge.

I save different sized jars and lids (jam, pickles etc ) and decant tin contents into them. Food lasts longer in the glass jars than it does in the tin, also feels more hygenic.

I would always put in a Tupperware. But very rarely do we have half tins left over anyway.
I remember mum always had half a tin of cat food in the fridge with the spoon sticking out, still makes me heave now 20 years later

I did food safety certificate about 9y ago you still had to take out of time then too. Not sure when or if changed!

The other issue is that the tins themselves won't be clean. They will have been handled by goodness knows how many people who have filthy hands and then you are transferring all of that to your fridge shelves.

I would never put tins in a fridge, not sure why though. I just pic the extra amount in a bowl and cover it. I just seem to recall there was a health reason.
