I decant - for all the reasons mentioned up thread

MillieMoodle · 13/01/2016 18:10

I did a food hygiene certificate when I was at school (15ish years ago) and I remember being told that BAD THINGS would happen if tins were put in the fridge. I can't remember what exactly, but I've never done it and it would freak me out to. I'm with your friend on this one, sorry OP.

Top tips from mumsnetters - re-using glass jars. I do decant into tupperware occasionally but I always end up throwing it away as no one else can be bothered to look what's in the virtually see through tub!
A glass jar is a brilliant idea though - and cuts down the mismatched lids n tubs I seem to acquire.

I vaguely recall being taught never to put tins in the fridge, but have no idea why!
I don't anyway. It takes 30 seconds to put leftovers in a tub and chuck the tin in the recycling. A tub seals in any smells better, too.

Just rtft. Pet food in the fridge [vomitsmiley]. That hasn't helped the morning sickness

Cliffdiver · 14/01/2016 06:22

I'm also with your friend op

insancerre · 14/01/2016 06:36

I empty into a mug and cover with clingfilm

goldenpineapple · 14/01/2016 08:09

I also decant.

Our neighbour who feeds our cat when we're away always puts 1/2 pouches of wet cat food in the fridge. Its revolting, especially as we're vegetarian. But as she's doing us a favour I never feel like I can tell her not to!

I decant because I can taste the metal if I dont. The coated tins are white inside, and they're not all coated.

Bunbaker · 14/01/2016 08:22

I always decant into plastic lidded containers because he metal of uncoated tins reacts with acid foods. Why do you think recipes involving marinades always state to use a non metallic dish or container? It also affects the taste.

I lifted this explanation from another site:

"Today’s cans are made from tin or aluminum. When these materials are exposed to acidic foods in combination with oxygen in the air, they can oxidize or corrode. This does not contaminate the food, but does create a metallic or “tinny” taste that can be unappealing to consumers. Because of this oxidation process, highly acidic foods like juices, tomato products or pickled fruits and vegetables should not be stored in open cans in the refrigerator. They should be transferred to glass or plastic storage containers to avoid the metallic taste and possible discoloration."

It states on the NHS website why you should always decant out of tins.
