Bloody aspartame poisoning...

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 14:46

Is not real and has been disproved time and time again. Aibu to get cross every time someone says its toxic blah blah blah! There is one group of people who should avoid it if they have a certain rare condition otherwise it's completely safe.
Rant over!

Did someone really reference Mercola????????

GraysAnalogy · 11/01/2016 16:40

Do people still have this massive hang up over it? Jesus.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2016 16:41

Mercola has to have that disclaimer- because he has been sued so often........

sohackedoff · 11/01/2016 16:45

The mercola reference is to a list of research. Bothered to read all or any of the articles before you dismissed them?

Katenka · 11/01/2016 16:47

What is the point of this thread if not to have a go at people who DO have a problem with aspartame.

If you read it you would know that's not the point Wink

Katenka · 11/01/2016 16:49

katy that could be for a range of reasons. I worked for a supplement company. I won't touch protein shakes anymore. Certainly wouldn't let me kids have them, like one UK company claims their owners kids have a daily shake.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2016 16:50

"

Not if they were endorsed by amber cola, no.

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 11/01/2016 16:52

I am rapidly gaining some new favourite posters on this thread. Big love to the evidence-based lot of you.

Katenka · 11/01/2016 16:52

Doesn't it cause cancer in high doses?

Xylitol? I don't think so. Some countries give xylitol sweets to kids in schools to keep teeth plaque down. Can't see them doing that if it's proven to cause cancer

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2016 16:55

my last post should say "not if they are endorsed by mercola, no"

I have no idea what amber cola is. Probably something sneaked into the thread by Big Pharma.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 11/01/2016 16:55

I try to avoid artificial sweeteners because I don't like getting the squits Grin

I avoid anything with sorbitol in it. Aspartame has a funny taste so I avoid diet coke. The only one I will consume is sucralose.

iPost · 11/01/2016 16:56

I do think they need to put on MUCH BIGGER WARNINGS about the reaction your intestines can have to artificial sweeteners.

Oh dear god I thought I was going to die.

Tiny packs of gum need an A4 flyer attached (with header image of skull and crossbones overlying throbbing and bloated intestines) at the very least.

ghostyslovesheep · 11/01/2016 16:56

I bet Amber Cola is FULL of chemicals

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 17:06

The whole issue about sweeteners is similar to the nonsense about the MMR vaccine. The refusal of some parents to give it to their children caused the re emergence of a potential life threatening illness. Thank goodness withholding sweeteners doesn't cause harm like measles does. It does highlight the need to look at robust clinical trials by credited professionals rather than some quack scientist somewhere.
Big up to the supporters of REAL science Grin

Margarine was "safe" too.

Until it wasn't.

Why do you care though? If you want to eat it fine go for it, but why so you care if people don't want to consume E951 (a methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide)?

LovelyFriend · 11/01/2016 17:08

The refusal of some parents to give it to their children caused the re emergence of a potential life threatening illness.

WTAF?

I'm risking serious life threatening illness by not giving my kids E951?

squoosh · 11/01/2016 17:10

I don't think you can compare refusing to give your kids sweeteners to refusing to allow your kids have the MMR.

Big up to the supporters of keeping a sense of perspective!

ghostyslovesheep · 11/01/2016 17:11

no that's obviously NOT what she said!

LovelyFriend · 11/01/2016 17:14

well it's a direct quote ..

Pipistrella · 11/01/2016 17:15

Interesting (though I have only skimmed)

I try and avoid 'no added sugar' drinks because basically, they dehydrate me quite badly.

Things that happen are I get a dry mouth, especially at night; I start to need to wee in the night when I never normally do; sometimes I start to feel a slight sense of disorientation/sadness/unreality, but I think that is just being dehydrated.

If you drink enough quantities of water or whatever to balance it it's probably alright, but I don't, so it affects me quite noticeably.

I hate the fact you can hardly buy anything without sweeteners in these days - for a non-tap water drinker it's quite limiting.

I tend to have high juice squash or proper juice, mixed with fizzy water maybe.

(reason I don't drink tap water is a hangover from three HG pregnancies - I just can't drink it any more)

Sallystyle · 11/01/2016 17:15

I am addicted to pepsi max. I drink that all day long. I have no fillings and in good enough health.

I lost five stone while drinking it.

The problem is, some people eat more calories because they think they are being good by drinking diet drinks. Diet drinks do not make you fat.

Laughing at Mercola being used as evidence.

Diet coke tastes like shit. Pepsi max is the best drink ever. I'm on my 4th can today, would be more but I slept a lot of the day.

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 17:15

Ffs read the bloody post properly!

Blimey the amount of caffeine some people have is appalling/surprising

I can't have it, well a little bit in chocolate but no coke, no coffee, no normal tea.

Makes me very jittery and anxious. And cross.

I get awful headaches too if I have it for a while then stop. Awful.
