Bloody aspartame poisoning...

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 14:46

Is not real and has been disproved time and time again. Aibu to get cross every time someone says its toxic blah blah blah! There is one group of people who should avoid it if they have a certain rare condition otherwise it's completely safe.
Rant over!

dihydrogen monoxide

So few people seem to know about this danger........

Birdsgottafly · 11/01/2016 16:23

Findo don't interrupt my halo polishing by quoting facts.

Katenka · 11/01/2016 16:23

I think I would keep my kids away from hydrogen dioxide. It sounds lethally unstable.

It's very unstable, especially if you leave a four year old alone with the dispenser. Explodes everywhere all its own, or so my ds says.Grin

elementofsurprise · 11/01/2016 16:24

em I'm so happy I'm not the only one who doesn't like the taste of water! (What is that btw - the water or the trace substances in it?)

Can't taste any nasty aftertaste with aspartame though.

Anyway, surely the dangerous thing you need to watch in fizzy drinks is the dihydrogen monoxide? Not just fizzy drinks, either, it's in all sorts of stuff...

RedToothBrush · 11/01/2016 16:24

What is the point of this thread if not to have a go at people who DO have a problem with aspartame.

I'm just giving you the opportunity to rant.

DyslexicScientist · 11/01/2016 16:25

Xylitol isn't artificial.

It gives me a bad headache. I don't think its good for us, different to foods I'm allergic to.

Doesn't it cause cancer in high doses?

GnomePhone · 11/01/2016 16:25

I'm always baffled that people choose drinks with the substance which is proven to be harmful ie. Sugar, over artificial sweeteners which are proven not to be!

Artificial sweeteners are not PROVEN to be harmless, it's just that the testing done so far hasn't shown that it is. And as evidenced by this thread, they can cause reactions in some people.

Unless you are diabetic, small quantities of natural sugar are unlikely to harm you - we have evolved to eat natural sugars. (That doesn't mean that consuming litres of full fat coke every day is a good idea though.)

elementofsurprise · 11/01/2016 16:25

Bertrand x-post. Shocking how few people know about it. Grin

DinoSnores · 11/01/2016 16:26

red, you have decided to paint yourself as a victim against all these bullies, in a fairly classic straw man argument.

As I said earlier, just because you might react to it, it doesn't mean that aspartame is inherently poisonous, just as people who get migraines associated with cheese don't claim that cheese should be banned because of "cheese poisoning".

DinoSnores · 11/01/2016 16:28

element, I've found that since moving from lovely Scottish soft water, I really had to get used to the taste of much harder SE English water, so it must be the trace elements or something. I can drink water but can't stand it if it has sat for any length of time and can always tell if the water wasn't freshly out of the tap if someone else makes me a cup of tea.

abbsismyhero · 11/01/2016 16:28

gives me a headache if i drink too much gives me a headache if i detox off it so does chocolate so does sugar so does a lot of things actually

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2016 16:29

"What is the point of this thread if not to have a go at people who DO have a problem with aspartame.

Nobody has said for a second that there aren't people who are sensitive/allergic. As there are people who are sensitive/allergic to everything. My dp is allergic to chocolate. He doesn't produce websites telling everyone that chocolate is poison.

sohackedoff · 11/01/2016 16:30

There is a LOT of research on this. Google "mercola aspartame" and read some of the dozens of reports. I won't give it to my family. But enjoy if you can't be arsed to read...

sleepwhenidie · 11/01/2016 16:31

This is an interesting and balanced article on the subject. authoritynutrition.com/artificial-sweeteners-and-weight-gain/

I agree with it. It is particularly interesting to me that despite the huge increase in the addition and consumption of artificial sweeteners in food and drink, that the rate of obesity isn't going in the opposite direction...

squoosh · 11/01/2016 16:31

Twinklestein good job the attack of the squits hit her before she went on the date!

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 16:31

Well aspartame is the most tested food substance in the history of the world ( as I read somewhere!) so I think we can consider that it is safe. I tend to go on science rather than anecdotal evidence as I do in my professional life.

Yes but people are consuming vast vats of fatty, sugary crap at the same time as the sugar free soda. Don't think you can blame the soda can you?

shit didn't know it was meant to be bad

diet coke addict Blush

DinoSnores · 11/01/2016 16:35

"But enjoy if you can't be arsed to read..."

Or indeed trust the opinion of groups of actual real scientists publishing peer reviewed studies and papers rather than one rather colourful American doctor, who obviously has no agenda whatsoever either.

The European Food Safety Authority has published quite a lot on the issue, if, sohackedoff, you can be bothered to read it...

Winstonsma · 11/01/2016 16:36

i'm addicted to diet cherry* coke :( I give up for weeks then come creeping back for more. is it the aspartame? who knows, I think it's the caffeine that's addictive for me. But a GP friend told me that diet coke leaches the calcium from your bones. EEEEEEEKKKKKK

*the cherry hides the taste of the actual diet coke - so I don't even really like it. But its the only caffeinated product I can stand - keeps me going :D giving up again once current supply is gone...

ghostyslovesheep · 11/01/2016 16:36

OMG Bert ...and on another thread someone said the same stuff can kill you and doesn't rehydrate you - and they where an actual path ological liar ologist!

Eastpoint · 11/01/2016 16:36

I'm sorry I got my artificial sweeteners muddled up. Thanks to all those who put me straight.

Katymac · 11/01/2016 16:36

I know a person who works for a big (very big) soft drink manufacturer & they don't give it to their children; they won't discuss why & they won't drink it themselves or serve it at their house

They aren't a paranoid type - very down to earth and sceptical...
