To shout at this dog-owner?

Surely if your dog jumps up at strangers it should be on a lead?!

Walking in park, 4-month-old baby in baby-carrier (with his feet dangling in furry bootees) a Westie started jumping up at me, scrabbling at my leg and making grabs at baby's foot when he jumped! I yelled at dog to 'get down then shouted at owner to 'get your dog under control' (she responded with a cheery sorry!)

Did I overreact? I wouldn't care so much had I not had baby strapped to me. I get it that baby's bootees might look like toys but I don't want a dog tugging on them or getting mud/slobber everywhere. And I don't want dogs running round my feet particularly when ground is slippery.

Why can't people keep dogs on leads?? It's not the first time random dogs have jumped up in the park.

I have a 5 yr old German Shepard, if he ever jumped up at anyone in the park I would be mortified! Am a dog person but I hate it when other dogs jump up at me and the owners think nothing of it. I was once knocked over by a golden lab, I was pregnant at the time, the extra weight hurt my wrist badly the owner wasn't really bothered.

Saz12 · 09/01/2016 22:03

It is unacceptable to have a dog which does not "behave". As a MINIMUM, it should come back when you call it; sit when you tell it to, and not pull on a lead. No excuses.

Puppies will always chew (at hands, shoe laces, everything else), their will always be over-enthusiastic dogs in parks, and dogs will never be toilet trained. That is why owners have to take responsibility - to keep the puppy away from very small kids, to train dogs not to jump up and to return when called, and to clean up after them.

Crazybaglady · 09/01/2016 22:07

Not read the full thread but I heard that if a dog jumps at you then you should turn your back to it as they wont jump at your back. Not sure if it's true but worth considering in future

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 09/01/2016 22:21

All the people who have had unpleasant encounters with dogs. Could you please now recount all the times that a dog has walked past and completely ignored you? Oh, except that of course would be hundreds of times and you wouldn't remember all those because nothing happened.

I might kidnap andrewofgg and dump him at Crufts. Who's with me?

I don't know why I bother to read these threads. They never end well. Dog haters are allowed to rant and criticise our lovely dogs and generalise that they're all slathering hell hounds that are allowed to shit everywhere. What happened to being a nation of animal lovers? They make allowances for the odd responsible dog owner without admitting that most of us are responsible dog owners.

I'm done. The sheer overwhelming ignorant vitriolic vile shit being peddled is just unanswerable.

CocktailQueen · 09/01/2016 22:54

aborabelle - I do se your point, and of course people do remember negative incidents more than positive, but what this tells you is that a huge number of dog owners are inconsiderate - or worse - and allow their dogs to run wild, jump up, run around out of control, don't clean up after them and so on.

I cannot count the number of times that dogs and their shitty owners have ruined walks or outings for us - and for friends too, from their stories.

So good for you for being a considerate dog owner, and that this fantastic, but the sad news is that so many other people aren't.

Prettyinblue · 09/01/2016 22:56

I can't believe people are suggesting to kick a dog. A surefire way to get bitten by an animal. Think I would put up with a bit of mud rather than a dogbite.

But dogs that won't come back to their owner should never be let off the lead.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 09/01/2016 23:17

Well I'm sorry Cocktail but a few anecdotes on here does not constitute a huge number. Go and see the thousands of dog owners that descend on Crufts, again, for example, and see how many of them are bad owners.

Givemestrength100 · 09/01/2016 23:43

I can't believe people would "kick a dog". It pisses me off when dogs jump up but they are usually friendly and enthusiastic if anyone kicked my dog I think I'd kick them. My dog doesn't jump up but ignores people till they start cooing at her then she might. I don't like walking her in busy parks though so don't give her much opportunity.

CocktailQueen · 09/01/2016 23:49

But I can only comment on those dog owners I see! I don't give a flying fart if there are millions of fab dog owners at crufts! They're not the ones I come across on days out! I often come across crappy, shitty, inconsiderate ones! So that's a disingenuous argument at best.

iceyrider16 · 09/01/2016 23:52

The point is cocktail is that you don't notice all the many many dogs that go past you in a day and don't bother you.

kali110 · 10/01/2016 01:03

maybebabybee Completely agree with you regarding the park being for everyone.
I love going to the park and seeing people with their kids and dogs.
I disagree about shutting them away if someone cones round though.
Throwingshade
Yes my house is theirs too, but i do have a family member who is allergic so can't be around them so i lock them away. My friend also is terrified so i shut them away if they come over. You may have met some people who don't keep their pets locked away but not everybody is like this! My friend also keeps her cat in the dining room unless it's me going over. When i was growing up my mom would keep our dog upstairs if we had visitors.
Booboostwo i don't think it was a scary dog? The dog wasn't attacking the toddler, it was nipping, what puppies do!
CigarsofthePharoahs i'm not surprised you were happy when they were gone! They should have taken the poor puppy out. It was just doing what puppies do but your toddler was also doing what a toddler does! They shouldn't have left the poor dog there where there was potential for it to get stressed and hurt, or hurt others from playing.they shouldn't have expected you to watch the dog for them nor for you to have to tell it no!
All they've done is potentially made your child scared of dogs Hmm

knobblyknee · 10/01/2016 03:44

YANBU, I'm a dog owner and this kind of thing makes me seethe.

Telling you to stay away from the park when people are walking their dogs, or that people scream at dogs that are no where near them is missing the bloody point.

The dog was grabbing at your babies feet.
That is a normal reaction for an aggressive dog when it sees a child being picked up. *rolls eyes

You can buy an anti dog alarm from Amazon. (Just make sure the damn batteries are charged up Grin )

straighttalker · 10/01/2016 05:24

"You find kids with sticky hands distasteful you're tired of LIFE. Just equating flea bags with children illustrates how warped you are."

ROFL, schlong

I also find kids with sticky hands distasteful, and I'm not tired of life.

And if you can assume my lovely and well-behaved dogs are "fleabags", I assume your entitled little darlings are sticky lice-ridden little brats.

YANBU to be annoyed, OP. Dogs should be under verbal control in parks. They shouldn't jump up or otherwise bother people who do not wish to be bothered. If dog-owners can't be reasonably sure their dogs won't do this, they should be on leads.
(Children should also be under verbal control and not bother people who do not wish to be bothered but nobody seems interested in enforcing that...)

kali110 · 10/01/2016 06:48

straight agree with you there! You find kids with sticky hands distasteful you're tired of LIFE. Just equating flea bags with children illustrates how warped you are. how rude!
Warped?? Because people think of their pets as kids?
You know some people have pets because they can't/don't want actual kids? Or as a companion?
There's nothing wrong with it.
Tired of life?
Before i got my pet i was.... I must be doing it the wrong way Grin

ArmchairTraveller · 10/01/2016 07:02

'The point is cocktail is that you don't notice all the many many dogs that go past you in a day and don't bother you.'

Of course I do, I am very aware of any dog in my vicinity, continuous risk assessment, and every time I pass/meet/see a responsible owner with a well-mannered dog, it makes me smile.
Likewise when I see an owner helping and supporting their dog into becoming an obedient, trained animal and who is proactive about controlling them before there's a problem. Stopping the bouncing and nipping before I get harassed.
Which is why the large numbers of thoughtless, inconsiderate wankers who own dogs are infuriating. You chose to have a furbaby bloody well parent it properly. Thousands do, why aren't you, and why the victim-blaming?

honkinghaddock · 10/01/2016 08:17

Crazybaglady - Ds got jumped at from behind by a dog. It seemed friendly enough but I was worried about his reaction because he hates being touched from behind. Thankfully he didn't start getting upset till the dog had moved on. All the owner had to say was that the dog liked children.

kali not sure I understand your last comment to me. I was talking about posters who feel threatened by dogs that run up to them in an aggressive manner. I don't think the puppy was aggressive either, just the owner was stupid to leave a puppy and toddler together, it is not a good combination even with a lot of supervision. To help a toddler interact with a puppy you pick a time when the puppy is calm (ha ha) and the toddler is listening (ha ha) and you encourage the toddler to stroke the puppy gently while making sure the puppy doesn't jump up or nip. That's the best you can hope for there!

AppleSetsSail · 10/01/2016 13:28

Schlong, just as you seemingly don't like dogs (have I got that right? your posts were so nuanced I couldn't be certain), not everyone likes kids. You might want to consider that.

Strangeoccurence · 10/01/2016 13:36

I dont think yabu to get this owner told.
But she did apologise.

Dogs in the park are often found off leash, and usually its not a problem.
Where i go there is this little pug who races towards you and jumps mid run. For as small as it is, it really hurts. It gets annoying after a while, but...the woman is trying to train this out of her dog and others, myself included try and reinforce what she does to stop this happening.

My dog (a pup) also tries to do this, but when off the leash i have my eyes everywhere for potential people he would love to jump on. I call him and leash him before he gets his focus on them.
There has been the odd occasion where i have missed someone and he has jumped up, and i couldnt apologise enough. Thankfully, they understood and were fine about it.

I have also had dogs who dont listen to recall harrass my dog who was on the leash, to the point he was getting overwhelmed, nervous and growling. I was so close to shouting at this man due to his lack of control, and common sense. He just repeatedly shouted of them, when they clearly werent listening! Why not physically remove them!?
The times my dog has gone to see people, i have been running behind him to grab him asap.

I would have been mortified had it of been my dog jumping at you with a baby

kali110 · 10/01/2016 13:43

Booboostwo I completely applogise then! I read your post wrong!

kali110 · 10/01/2016 13:48

schlong i don't have a dog but i would rather be a dog nut than someone like you. You sound compassionless.
You do realise people with mental health problems have dogs or other pets to help them?
Oaps have pets as companions?
Not everybody have family or family they wish to have contact with?
These things must not exsist in your world Hmm
Again, not warped, just warped to you.
Parks are for everyone that includes dogs.
It's not just dogs that shit you know....

AppleSetsSail · 10/01/2016 13:51

Sadly, there is a sizeable contingency unable to cope with their bowels after smoking crack or whatever at the dodgy local park - consequently, there is quite a lot of human poo.

kali110 · 10/01/2016 13:54

AppleSetsSail My point made, but i feel for you! That is disgusting!

Seryph · 10/01/2016 14:11

I remember being in Euro Disney and seeing a child (hands held by it's mother) squatting down at the side of the path and doing a poo. And no, it's mother did not pick up the poo.
But hey! At least it wasn't a dog, because having a dog out in public would be crazy right?
