Went to cinema this week with DH, planning to take DS and his brother tomorrow for birthday treat. I can't believe that in 2016 we will be forced to walk past this poster and that they have even called the film Dirty Granpa!
www.movieinsider.com/posters/277857/

Really??? Letching older man perving young woman's suggestively raised arse whilst other man holds 'petrol nozzle' pointing at her?? I don't want my sons seeing this sexist shit.
(only one cinema in our town btw)

brightside: it's not a perpetratorless crime Confused It's primarily committed by men, and until the men who think this way change their attitudes, we'll just go round in circles. Yes, some women think this way as well, but I do believe that they've fallen into the trap of being (for want of a better word) "brainwashed" by the men in their life that misogyny isn't a big deal, or they want to be "cool girls" for the approval of men, or they've been conditioned to believe that misogyny only happens to "other" women, not naice women like them, through generations of (female-led) internalised misogyny - perpetrated by popular culture and prevailing attitudes.

NewLife
I believe education changes societal views and norms, not campaigning to change/ remove an advert, or other items that may offend. Show your kids the posters and if you think they are wrong, explain why.

I take your point, and absolutely I am NOT of the view that we should shield children from this sort of thing to avoid discussing it. It should absolutely be discussed. But seeing these sorts of movies / imagery constantly popping up continues to normalise it, and not objecting in any way means advertisers can sit back and go "Hey, no one's complained. We got away with it! "

If we don't fight against this sort of misogyny, things will never ever change. We managed to get rid of Page 3 in The Sun this way. Hell, if you take it back to basics, fighting is how we got the vote in the first place. Or else why do people protest / boycott anything?

that when straight men looked at pictures of women in bikinis, areas of the brain that normally light up in anticipation of using tools, like spanners and screwdrivers, were activated.

God, that actually makes me shudder.

Good call on the Miss Representation doc, sleep - I recommend it too.

Januarytoes · 08/01/2016 16:52

Lord - that's your mum's bum in the poster, that is

limitedperiodonly · 08/01/2016 16:58

You can complain but I prefer the direct approach.

It's a shame that this image is from the 70s, but some people are slow learners

to not want my DS to be confronted with this large poster when we go to cinema?
limitedperiodonly · 08/01/2016 17:06

I think it's really sad everyone jumping on lord and assuming they are a man

Quite right. There's nothing wrong with being a man. Or being jumped on.

Help! I think I've been possessed by the spirit of a 70s ad man.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 18:31

"Men are more likely to think of women as objects if they have looked at sexy pictures of females beforehand, psychologists said yesterday.

Researchers used brain scans to show that when straight men looked at pictures of women in bikinis, areas of the brain that normally light up in anticipation of using tools, like spanners and screwdrivers, were activated.

Scans of some of the men found that a part of the brain associated with empathy for other people's emotions and wishes shut down after looking at the pictures."

LOL! What a load of utter shite! 😆

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 18:33

LOL! What a load of utter shite!

That's your measured response to a scientific study? Why? Because you think her methods were flawed? Because you simply can't believe a man would think like that? What evidence do you have this this study was flawed? Because your response is frankly embarrassing and does you no favours whatsoever.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/01/2016 18:38

There should be even more massive posters focussing on women's arses and fully dressed men gathering around to look at them. They should put posters like that everywhere not just at cinema/on buses etc. Not only is that poster hilarious, that's ground-breaking humour that is, but its very important for kids to learn what's what, eh Lord.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 18:38

You believe every scientific study is correct? Of course you don't think, just the ones which reinforce your prejudices.

The only appropriate response to this "study" is laughter.

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 18:39

Eh? Confused

Helmetbymidnight · 08/01/2016 18:39

Its already evident you have a very sophisticated sense of humour, Lord.

FlatOnTheHill · 08/01/2016 18:40

OP you are going over the top Confused chill out. Its ridiculous.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 18:45

Flat I think OP's been very measured and reasonable, actually. She hardly suggested burning down the cinema, did she?

You believe every scientific study is correct? Of course you don't think, just the ones which reinforce your prejudices.

Er, aren't you doing exactly the same? You disbelieve this study, because it enforces your prejudices to do so. Strange argument to use.

I have no evidence that this study is correct beyond the study itself. But you, also, have no evidence the study is flawed. You just believe it is.

If you're going to debate misogyny, it's useful to actually debate rather than just go "LOL I don't believe that!111!!!"

limitedperiodonly · 08/01/2016 18:48

I suppose it is utter shite in a way.

If you grow up in an environment where it's okay to treat people like shit, then most people do. We don't need any complicated studies to establish this. It may even let people who do it off the hook by inventing reasons for their shitty behaviour.

People of a reasonable frame of mind work out for themselves that it's not okay to shit on other people. Especially if it is it explained to them.

I find gently saying: 'Now, would you like it if that happened to you?' is a good starting point from the age of about three.

Those people who reach adulthood without grasping the lesson either aren't reasonable or may be incapable of reasoning.

kali110 · 08/01/2016 18:49

NewLife4Me Completely agree with your post.
So because men aren't objectified as much as women then it's ok to oggle them?
Sexism is ok aslong as it's not towards women then Hmm
How would anyone know what 'type' of people go to watch this film? How do you know what they do or what they agree with? Maybe some people just want to go watch a film and not take it seriously?
I've stood up before when there's been blatant sexism so what sort of person am i then?
Again who has actually seen the film or even knows much about it?
lord is a man, so what? It doesn't justify every poster jumping on them for not agreeing and calling him a troll.

kali110 · 08/01/2016 18:51

Please, can we also stop the 'cool girls' shit.

lljkk · 08/01/2016 18:58

I think the poster is funny. Esp. enjoy the embarrassed young guy.

BertrandRussell · 08/01/2016 19:03

"So because men aren't objectified as much as women then it's ok to oggle them? "
Has there ever been a poster like this where the genders were reversed?

LordBrightside · 08/01/2016 19:04

"Er, aren't you doing exactly the same? You disbelieve this study, because it enforces your prejudices to do so. Strange argument to use."

Ok, let's choose to belief the findings of the study are valid. The natural conclusion is that it is entirely ok and understandable for men to "objectify" women that they find attractive, because that is their nature. You must also conclude that with men making up almost exactly half the population that the world should cater to their views too and there should be sexual imagery in advertising and the media.

No?

limitedperiodonly · 08/01/2016 19:05

Please, can we also stop the 'cool girls' shit.

I haven't but if I had, why shouldn't I? I'm just exercising my right to express myself.

That's what you want, isn't it?

BertrandRussell · 08/01/2016 19:05

"Please, can we also stop the 'cool girls' shit."

Why? Because you don't like it if people suggest you are one?

limitedperiodonly · 08/01/2016 19:07

How would anyone know what 'type' of people go to watch this film?

They'll be the disappointed people who can't get in to see Battleship Potemkin because it'll be sold out Sad

CultureSucksDownWords · 08/01/2016 19:09

"So because men aren't objectified as much as women then it's ok to oggle them?
Sexism is ok aslong as it's not towards women then"

No one has argued this, have they? No one has said it's ok to ogle men, as far as I can tell.

Does sexism have to be "blatant" for it to be an issue? This poster is a minor issue, but surely one that can be discussed? People can think and care about more than one thing at a time.

The woman in the poster is being shown as an object exactly as the car is. Add to that the unpleasant tag line about "They're hitting the road, and everything on it", not "everyone" or "every woman" even, but "everything". Unless you think that it's a reference to bad driving?

I would imagine that lots of people go and see this film without thinking about it at all. That doesn't mean other people can't have an opinion about what's wrong with this sort of poster and film (haven't seen it so don't know how sexist the film itself is).

I find as I get older, and watch my DS grow up, and especially now I'm pregnant and could be having a girl, I'm increasingly intolerant of low level pervasive sexism that contributes to a culture where women and girls are not valued to the same extent as men and boys. It makes me depressed about where we're going as a society that we still get it so wrong on so many occasions.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 08/01/2016 19:19

Brightside, I'm not sure if the results of the study are caused by nature or nurture. However if their behaviour is detrimental to the other half of the population in the serious way that it is, then I don't think it should be catered to, no.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/01/2016 19:21

Again who has actually seen the film or even knows much about it?

We are talking about a poster. You get that, right?
