Went to cinema this week with DH, planning to take DS and his brother tomorrow for birthday treat. I can't believe that in 2016 we will be forced to walk past this poster and that they have even called the film Dirty Granpa!

Really??? Letching older man perving young woman's suggestively raised arse whilst other man holds 'petrol nozzle' pointing at her?? I don't want my sons seeing this sexist shit.
(only one cinema in our town btw)

YANBU - it's vile, though not as vile as the 50 Shades of Grey posters.

It is sexist, for all the reasons goodnight mentions but I honestly think it won't register with kids. I wouldn't say anything to them - will only draw attention to it. But complain to the cinema. The title of the film is gross too - sounds like some sort of tribute to Jimmy Savile.

happyanddappy · 08/01/2016 10:56

YANBU

SouthWesterlyWinds · 08/01/2016 10:57

I find it depressing that Robert de Niro is in the starring role.

Sod the housework, am going to watch Heat this afternoon in protest.

Hatethis22 · 08/01/2016 10:57

It does objectify women but how do you keep children away from images that objectify women when they're everywhere?

OfaFrenchmind2 · 08/01/2016 10:58

YABU. But then, this is MN, so you will have the new mores-police that will back you up.
I am not crazy about this movie, because it is not my type of movies. But you should take a look at what was hilarious some years, or decades ago, what is the symbol of British humour, and see how you would censure it with your stringent and dogmatic opinions. Would the Monty Python still exists?

limitedperiodonly · 08/01/2016 10:59

It's the perfect vehicle for the way Robert De Niro's career has been travelling for years.

What a sad old wanker.

velourvoyageur · 08/01/2016 11:00

I think it's a really awful poster and you're right to be bothered by it.

But you could use it as a teaching point, because it does exist and he will see things like that in future, and should be armed against it.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 08/01/2016 11:01

My main question is does RDN have some massive tax bill he needs to pay off, as his films are getting shittier and shittier

Its mega ick, and whilst I think OP might be tad overdramatic- she raises a fair point - I don't her kids will even notice it

its ICKY as fuck - and RDN should be ashamed

MorrisZapp · 08/01/2016 11:02

Of course you're not being unreasonable. Loads of lame responses on here 'worse things exist, stop moaning' etc, total failure of reasoned argument.

I saw that poster on a bus yesterday and felt embarrassed to be a human being. Robert de Niro? Really? Words fail, don't they.

I don't want my son, my friends, my granny or anybody subjected to this utter sexist dross as part of the wallpaper of the world. It's completely depressing that people excuse it.

fusionconfusion · 08/01/2016 11:06

I am not "offended" but it is grim. And it is also grim that the vast majority of posters don't see any reason why it's not a FANTASTIC idea to objectify women like this.

BadgersBum · 08/01/2016 11:07

I think it's sexist, but my 7 year old DS would just find it funny that there's a poster with a bum sticking out on it!

fusionconfusion · 08/01/2016 11:08

Thread moved on, thankfully more people are not-keen on this archaic display of "humour".

To me, the point is that children won't notice it. These images are still commonplace.

They're making the girl a target. You can't even see her face. She's just an arse to be fucked by surprise. That's what children are seeing.

Oh, and getting the message that that's what grand dads and grandsons to to bond. Nice.

MoMoTy · 08/01/2016 11:13

Yes you're being precious. You can look the other way.

EndothermicVertebrate · 08/01/2016 11:16

It's pretty lame and yes it's sexist but no more so than all sorts of printed ephemera that your DS will be unable to avoid.

I assume he's quite young and probably won't even register the subtext of that poster. Tbh the first thing that caught my eye was Zac Ephron no surprise there! in the foreground - he looks pretty uncomfortable and certainly isn't leering at the woman's arse, which is so far on the other side of the poster I had to look for it! The fact that De Niro is wearing sunglasses makes it less obvious that he's letching (not to an adult, but to a child). I think they've tried hard to get keep it palatable whilst still getting the message across, and it's dire and they've obviously failed but I can think of so many worse things in film and advertising I'd struggle to get that worked up about it.

If your DS is old enough to notice and comment on it, then he's old enough to have a discussion on how inappropriate you feel it is.

mudandmayhem01 · 08/01/2016 11:16

Just looked at the poster that is vile, my ds10 wouldn't notice it, my dd12 would be full of justified anger and probably write a letter to the cinema ( she has become very aware of sexism and homophobia since starting senior school) I would of course fully support her.

MrsJayy · 08/01/2016 11:19

But we cant ban images we dont like, the poster is really awful the message it sends out is phwoarr look at her arse I agree but it is a public place what can we do ?

SoupDragon · 08/01/2016 11:20

The younger man is not looking at her actually and, TBH, he looks exasperated. He might be pissed off with his grandfather's behaviour.

I would use it to spark a discussion why it is inappropriate to objectify anyone.

It's a little hard to comment without knowing how it fits within the context of the film. It might make sense. On the face of it is seems a very dated and inappropriate idea for a poster though.

HubbaBubbaMum · 08/01/2016 11:20

Redhat - Benny Hill - exactly! What do we think of that now? How much have attitudes to women improved? Maybe they would have improved more if previous generations like ours (I'm in my 40s) hadn't been exposed to loads of sexist stuff were women's main purpose is Women = sex, tits, arses.
Benny Hill, Carry On Films, James Bond films, page 3, etc etc endless list.... My post is because we really should have moved on by now. Maybe its New Year related!

OfaFrenchmind2 · 08/01/2016 11:20

mudandmayhem01 Buy her a brace for her hand, she is going to get writer's cramp if she send a letter as soon as she sees an example of possible sexism. Although it is really admirable she invests herself like that for her opinions.

Pilgit · 08/01/2016 11:20

It reiterates that it is normal to see women as objects. The fact that people see it as normal and relatively inoffensive is what bothers me. It's part of a wider issue in society.
