Etiquette with toiletries in a hotel

AIBU to pocket them?

I've been lucky enough to stay somewhere pretty naice for last few days and they have fancy assed brand name full size toiletries. My husband says it's not on to pocket them every day but I think it is. What's the etiquette?

Of course you swipe the toiletries, it's one of the perks! They're there for you to use, so you 'use' them by putting them in your bag

I also swipe the sachets of hot chocolate so that they replenish them the following day. Handy for camping.

sunnymeg I was going to suggest that if people are desperate they could take empty bottles and fill them!!

Not me I don't get to stay in hotels

Lol you're better than me. I took the ones given to me, and then took nore from the cleaners trolley too (with their blessing). Friends got alot of L'occitane for Christmas that year!

Blush for you. so fucking tacky!

I'd be more embarrassed about myself if I was judging people on an internet forum than taking toiletries from a hotel personally ^^

I find it embarrassing to be with people who swipe stuff and really worry about them being caught. The mum of an ex-bf used to take all of the sugar sachets from the cafe tables and emptied the whole salt pot into a napkin to take home. She was quite rich. Or the friend of mine who invariably swipes a pint glass in pubs.

I'm always amazed that my obvious embarrassment doesn't give them away. Not cut out for a life of crime.

These were not full size as the Op has clarified. I don't know why people get so worked about about this kind of stuff - it's very much "I don't stay in a place like this very often so I must hoard the stuff... hoard the stuff... hoard the stuff".

If you want more, just ask - call down to housekeeping or ask your chamber maid.

I regularly stay in 5 star+ hotels and I have very long hair - so I really need two mini bottles of conditioner for my hair and wash my hair every day. My experience is if you ask for an extra one or two, they just give you a pile extra of everything. Having said that, I do tend to use it rather than take it home.

I suppose it is, y0rkier0se, but tipping 30 sugar sachets into a handbag whilst drinking a cup of tea without sugar is a bit borderline, too, isn't it? Or taking the bottle of Heinz home.

Molton brown isn't posh! Posh would be something like Malin and Goetz. Also, there are companies who make the toiletries for hotels. They make them under licence in places like Poland and Czech Republic, so you're probably not getting the real molten brown and the hotels will have paid nothing like the retail price per unit.

I always take nice toiletries, cost is factored into the room price so why not?

I work in a hotel. Albeit not a fancy one but we wouldn't kick up a stink about 75ml toiletries. We also don't replace ours every day but if they're gone when a guest has left we don't really care, it would be easy to use up that much between two people a day

Going with the majority here. I don't even take the mini ones until the last day, when I always take them. (I like to pack light, so I use them while in situ.)

Oh God, done it again. Didn't notice that there are 14 pages to this thread and the conversation has moved on. Sigh...

I use them if they are of good quality, if they're not why wouLd I want to take them home!
In bath right now in luxury hotel - net surfing whilst DS sleeps
I used the bubble bath, and will probably risk the shampoo, prefer my own conditioner, as my hair is ultra dry and frizzy
The cotton wool balls in nice glass jar were helpful last night too, as I'd remembered make up remover but no pads

As luck would have it, I've just used the excuse of doing "dry January" to order some L'Occitaine and ordered a "travel sized" set of shampoo/conditioner/shower gel/body lotion. Most of those are in 75ml bottles (so OP would have needed to spend about £20 in a shop for the bottles she liberated). I tend to nab the small soaps and put them out on the wash basin in our guest room. DD and DH tend to scoff any freebie sweets and biscuits before the suitcases are even open!

We had a holiday in Cuba about 15 years ago at a time when locals were facing A LOT of rationing. It was rare for us to walk for more than a few metres out of the hotel before a local tried to befriend us and ask if we could give them the soap and shampoo from our rooms (whereas the chambermaids were asking us if we could exchange euro and pound coins into paper notes)!

I always take the mini bottles, and do 'stash' ones not used so they are replenished. It's part of the cost, and they're generally good quality ones. I put them out for guests to use.

Keeptrudging do your guests stash them to later put out for their guests Grin? Imagine the ibis shampoo from 2002 still circulating this way.

And eBay the shampoo on it's 15th birthday as vintage Travelodge.

Travelodge? Last time I stayed in one of them the dispensers were fixed to the wall (so unstealable)! I obviously only collect naice ones Grin.

Bloody hell, soon you'll have to fill a paper cup with shampoo at reception!

In previous job, I spent many nights in hotels. As part of team initiative - 23 of us Smile had decided to collect any unused mini bottles of shampoo, shower caps, comp goodies etc. we were provided and then donate to womens' shelter every couple of months.

Reni, I think that's just bizarre and would too find that embarassing. Especially as you said they're not exactly short of money
