AIBU?

To hate fireworks and think they should be banned

In residential areas?

They are so disruptive and dangerous. It's not even limited to 5th November or New Year's Eve they will go on for a week around every celebration plus people's personal parties.

AIBU to think letting off explosives in populated residential areas is incredibly stupid and unfair? As well as people getting injured it's not fair to the wildlife, and domestic animals. My cat has a heart problem and jumps like he's been hit every time the fireworks go off and ends up cowering behind the seat.

Then there's people with PTSD who think it sounds like gunshots, people like me who's illness gets worse with lack of sleep...

They should be organised displays only.

Talizorah.

Of course fireworks have benefits, otherwise people wouldn't pay to buy and see them.
It occurs to me that you are probably too stupid to do the relevant CBA.

There's an economic benefit, an employment benefit, a social benefit......

Report
TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 20:22

No they don't. Cars enable travel which has social and economic benefits.

Fireworks don't have any benefits you can't get from an organised display.

You are being ridiculous

Only in that they're a product being sold which is applicable for any product and not specific to fireworks.

Still struggling to find a viable benefit of cats.........

Not that I want to get into cats v fireworks as a choice but cats also have an economic benefit, employment benefit, social benefit, etc. Having said that, given someone will set an industry up around anything there's not much that doesn't have some of those benefits

Offset by dead birds, dead rodents, blind kids, shit everywhere, danger to those with allergies, risk of infection from bites, fleas, more animals die to make cat food.......

Report
TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 20:50

Rodents spread disease, cats don't cause kids to go blind get your facts right, there is animal shit everywhere anyway, anything can be an allergen, fleas aren't a problem if cats are well looked after, animals already die for meat

I don't trust people who don't like cats, they're always a special type of dickhead

Not RTFT bit my neighbours woke up to find that their cat had had part of its jaw blown off by a firework last night.
They started their year by having their pet put down.

Lum even done reasonably it's still fucking dangerous, disruptive and unfair
If done reasonably it doesn't have to any more dangerous than going out on your motorbike for a pleasure ride on a summer evening. Wanna ban that too?
Disruptive - no more so than the aforementioned motorbike, still out and gunning down a residential street at midnight, midweek.
Unfair? Depends when and how. We have them round here three times a year - a big sports club's annual do, Fireworks Night (and evenings around) and NYE. Also, now and then, a private party. People around here do not behave like prats. So why should we not continue to have fireworks? Isn't that unfair to all the people who enjoy them? Just because you don't like them, it doesn't mean they're fundamentally evil.

Well no, if someone has music on loudly it's only houses on either side affected
I wish. We used to be disturbed by a pub a hundred yards away (not the fireworks pub, though we can hear that sometimes too). And parties across the street.

Bloody awful about the cat. Really horrible and very sad. I can only think it was a rocket going sideways.

I love fireworks. I have been lucky enough to see the London fireworks a couple of times and thought last nights were absolutely fab. I am of an age when holding bangers in your hands was a popular pastime and I like a good loud bang (ooh er missus). A PP was right in that fireworks have been around for many years but when I was young they were no way as loud as they are now. They were simple affairs that went up,exploded and went out. They were also expensive when people didnt have money to throw around.

I hate that they are available to all the yahoo element with little brain who think nothing of wasting pounds on setting off fireworks at 2 oclock in the afternoon. Just why?

Last night we were treated to an almost continuous bombardment from 4 oclock onward. Granted it did resemble the Somme at midnight but it only slightly abated afterwards. I think we heard the last at around 3 am.

If I was in charge I would limit the sales of loud fireworks to organised displays but would also make available a domestic type with a much suppressed noise level . Then people can still enjoy the display but others dont have to be so affected.

You'd be better telling the NHS that........

Why fireworks make noise. Hmm

If you want silent ones, perhaps the govt should ban fireworks and issue a silent DVD of fireworks like those rubbish "real fire" or "aquarium" ones to each home instead.

disappointed how lovely, exploding cats Hmm as usual
Another thread where it's ok to laugh about cruelty to animals, especially cats.
It's a myth btw that cats kill loads of wild birds.
They are good medicine for lonely people, people with mental health problems, people with chronic pain just some examples of benefits of having cats.
People who don't like fireworks live joyless lives, how lovely.

tali some people have disabilities and can't manage to go to big displays.
I am one of them. I am not severly disabled, but i wouldn't be able to go to a big show.
My dh however would be able to set a few off!
I agree with a lot of your comments but that one was rather ignorant.

slaggy i'm so sorry Flowers

It amazes me that in these supposedly security aware times that any knuckle dragging moron can buy explosives. Because this is what they are. On the one hand a respectable re-enactor has to jump through hoops and get a black powder license and a shot gun cert to use a musket at a display, but any fool can get a load of fireworks. The OP wants organised displays only. If people are aware that there is one, arrangements can be made. You can't do anything now, as you've no idea which particular idiot will be setting fireworks off. Leave it to the organised displays

cats do not cause blindness. I assume you're referring to toxo, which is only dangerous to pregnant women and you're more likely to get from food. Cats do not pose a risk!

Kali I didn't think that someone else might let them off, so good point about that
