To hate fireworks and think they should be banned

In residential areas?

They are so disruptive and dangerous. It's not even limited to 5th November or New Year's Eve they will go on for a week around every celebration plus people's personal parties.

AIBU to think letting off explosives in populated residential areas is incredibly stupid and unfair? As well as people getting injured it's not fair to the wildlife, and domestic animals. My cat has a heart problem and jumps like he's been hit every time the fireworks go off and ends up cowering behind the seat.

Then there's people with PTSD who think it sounds like gunshots, people like me who's illness gets worse with lack of sleep...

They should be organised displays only.

YANBU a huge banger type ones just gone off here Angry
Fireworks in the day time?!
Poor Chestydog is now back cowering in his bed.

I wish they'd limit them to organised displays only.

MrsJayy · 01/01/2016 12:39

Yanbu my neighbour set theres off last night and instead of it shooting up it went sideways thank goodness their fence is high its ridiculous gardens compacted next to each other and fools letting of fireworks. Should need a lisence to buy them imo.

MrsJayy · 01/01/2016 12:41

Theirs * and while im on a rant why do folk set them off all night its a pain in the arse most towns /cities have displays go to that or watch from the bloody window

ReminderOfIdiocy · 01/01/2016 12:43

'What do people get out of them?' They're pretty. I love fireworks and the principle of public celebrations, but yes they are basically dangerous. I'd go with organised displays and New Year's Eve only, it's only 1 day a year.

emotionsecho · 01/01/2016 12:43

This ban 'x' because I don't like it rhetoric is getting very tedious.

Also, OP, your point about people with PTSD if they livebin a village or small town an organised display within that area wouldn't make much difference would it? Or do you only want organised displays where you deem acceptable? I imagine there are pets and people in London within the area of the fireworks last night who don't like them or are afraid of them so they need banning presumably?

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 12:44

Lots of things are pretty though. How is standing in the wet watching little bombs good?

But I'm not suggesting banning them all together just in residential areas

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 12:46

emotion organised displays are usually in massive fields away from residential areas. Still not great for wildlife but better for people and domestic animals.

Agree with you, Tali, it's just selfish behaviour really. I think it's a sign of the times with people wanting and indulging in everything bigger and better themselves rather than wanting to take part or support something being done on a larger scale. Organised displays are so much better - and safer.

I haven't got pets now but I used to dread fireworks night(s) for them, they hated it so much.

emotionsecho · 01/01/2016 12:55

I disagree OP, many are held close to residential areas as there are no massive fields available.

Dickbumdick · 01/01/2016 12:57

I'm not a massive fan, they're quite a frequent thing round here and seem to be lapped up by a special kind of idiot (round here that is, not people who enjoy them normally). Imagine if King Louie from Jungle Book had managed to get his mitts on some fire. That's kinda what it's like Wink

Crankycunt · 01/01/2016 13:02

YANBU. I also think that they haven't been this bad before, I mean car alarms being set off, my dog that is a huge rottweiler was curled up on my lap shaking, she's not done that before. She usually doesn't care but they sounded like the fuckers were being set off in my front yard.

I don't even want to see them banned, but massive only fit for professional display only ones yes, they should be regulated more.

Lifeisbeautiful2 · 01/01/2016 13:08

Totally agree, had a good hour of them last night. Wouldn't mind a few minutes at midnight but these started at 11 and went on til well after 12; no fun if you have to be up early for kids or work.

CalmYoBadSelf · 01/01/2016 13:10

We clearly don't have them going off as much as some of you do as they really are only a few times a year but I still think this suggestion of banning things that some people don't like is OTT.

They are not a major problem near us whereas complaints of dog and cat poo are very frequent. If someone was to suggest banning animals, other than working ones, in residential areas I'm sure a lot of you would be up in arms. That is the problem, one person's pleasure is another person's annoyance so we all need to be considerate and tolerant rather than banning anything

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 13:20

Animal poo can be easily sorted though and doesn't cause horrible injuries and set off people's mental health problems.

Animals also exist in the wild so there will always be a bit of poo. Whereas fireworks should be avoidable

Last night was really bad for some reason. Maybe more people stay in now and therefore set them off. Our DD woke at 12 in hysterics as she is terrified of them and our poor dog dribbled all round the kitchen and wet himself

But anyway. Yanbu

MrsJayy · 01/01/2016 13:26

Anybody over 18 can nip to the supermarket and buy fireworks they are under lock and key blah blah but they are selling things that anybody can let off anywhere i just think its dangerous

Osolea · 01/01/2016 15:26

I think it would be a shame to stop people using them at home for special occasions. Rather than a ban, it would be better to educate people into being more sensible and considerate with them.

I'm lucky enough to live in an area where people do use fireworks, but they use them considerately, like only on NYE and bonfire night, it doesn't go on for days around every event. I think it would be shit if something else was banned for the majority of considerate people just because of a few who are selfish.

ForalltheSaints · 01/01/2016 15:36

I agree about organised displays only, and on only a few days a year. As I recognise that pets can be terrified by them, and so their owners/keepers (what is the right word?) can be kept indoors. It also will help those who are uncomfortable with loud bangs because of some psychological trauma (war veterans for example).

Hulababy · 01/01/2016 15:38

Id rather they were only available for proper organised events under licence.

I've been to informal parties in the past where you've had fireworks not go off and people return to them, fireworks to fall and go in the wrong direction and all manner of issues. Even when being used by normally organised, sensible and responsible adults.

Notso · 01/01/2016 16:03

i posted similar last night but dogs and cats make a racket barking and wailing around here almost every night of the year. There is a major problem with crap everywhere too.
Some people are very scared of animals and dogs have caused horrific injuries. I don't want to deal with other people's pet poo however easily it can be sorted. It's vile.
I don't like pets but I'd never start a thread suggesting they only be kept in zoos.

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 16:19

Dogs and cats don't cause mental health issues
Dogs and cats can easily be avoided
Wildlife exists do you couldn't avoid all animals anyway

Fireworks are unnecessary

OP posts:
WeeMadArthur · 01/01/2016 16:31

YANBU, we are near fields and the horses last night were frantic. The fireworks went on for about 45 minutes and were really loud. I think they should be limited to organized displays too, at least then they are controlled. What really annoys me is the special snowflakes who didn't want their display to share the sky with anyone else's so waited to start letting them off until 12:30.

Andrewofgg · 01/01/2016 16:34

Organised displays are the way to go: but in towns that will normally be in parks, not far from houses so not far from pets; JTB.

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 16:35

Arthur what knobs! I don't get why fireworks are okay when other things are considered unacceptable at night
