To hate fireworks and think they should be banned

In residential areas?

They are so disruptive and dangerous. It's not even limited to 5th November or New Year's Eve they will go on for a week around every celebration plus people's personal parties.

AIBU to think letting off explosives in populated residential areas is incredibly stupid and unfair? As well as people getting injured it's not fair to the wildlife, and domestic animals. My cat has a heart problem and jumps like he's been hit every time the fireworks go off and ends up cowering behind the seat.

Then there's people with PTSD who think it sounds like gunshots, people like me who's illness gets worse with lack of sleep...

They should be organised displays only.

We've always had fireworks and I quite like them even though we don't set them off ourselves.
I have noticed that this generation seem to want everything banned that they don't like, really sort of entitled and selfish.
I find it quite weird and terribly sad. Sad

StrictlyMumDancing · 01/01/2016 16:42

When you see someone and property injured by a not properly used firework in a garden display then you suddenly find yourself questioning why you're allowed these things. Which you didn't used to be years ago, some of the ones that have become available in the last decade or so were only for professional displays before.

I'm not allowed to store explosives in my garden, so why should I be allowed to set off pretty ones because its new year?

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 17:03

How is it entitled to not want me, others with conditions, my cat, children, elderly and the wildlife to not be made ill? And that's not even counting people who get hit by fireworks

OP posts:
TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 17:03

Strictly completely agree. Hope the person you know was okay

Yes, but there have always been fireworks.
There have always been people and animals affected.
My dc were woken by them when they were little and most people have to get up for work.
Previous generations just got on with it, now everyone is so selfish and wants to piss on other people's chips.
It's just an observation.
Oh, and as for injuries, I had several friends injured when I was at school, they brought the firework code out and educated parents and children on how to stay safe.

StrictlyMumDancing · 01/01/2016 18:00

Previous generations did not have access to the fireworks that are available today.

tali thankfully they're ok, it was bloody terrifying though. The fireworks in question we discovered later were not suitable for garden use, but the person hosting assumed they'd be fine as he bought them from a supermarket and had discussed where he was setting them off.

CakeFail · 01/01/2016 18:04

OP you are not being U at all. They are so disruptive, dangerous in the hands of amateurs, contain chemicals which fuck with the environment and, if we're honest, usually aren't even slightly entertaining unless you have some mad firework display skills.

Munchkins1316 · 01/01/2016 18:08

After last night I'm on board.

Hate them anyway as they completely mess up the whole houses sleep (autistic toddler).

Last night I was expecting a few to go off at midnight. I'd even managed to get dd in bed a bit earlier to hopefully compensate for the lack of sleep we'd get.

Four o' fucking clock in the morning. That's when they stopped.

I live in quite a poor area. Who the hell bought all these fireworks?!

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 01/01/2016 18:10

I like Fireworks.
I'll never understand the mentality of some folk who let them off during the day or at 2, 3, 4 am or whatever. It's that that I dislike. I think they are more enjoyable to watch than to listen too.

What next if you ban them? Loud music tends to piss people off. Should that be banned as well?

VulcanWoman · 01/01/2016 18:13

Usually on New Years Eve they start at midnight as you would expect but last night started from about 10pm, what's that about Confused

emotionsecho · 01/01/2016 18:31

Ok so you only allow their use at organised displays which have to be away from any residential area, so that's the displays in London and any other city, or large town finished.

Then what, ban all parties in residential areas because the noise is disruptive, may wake children and people have to go to work etc., etc.

Stricter regulations on the type of fireworks available for private use, and the times they are allowed to be used would be better. I'd suggest that people should apply to the local council for a licence to use them, said licence would have to be shown at the point of purchase.

kali110 · 01/01/2016 18:33

I think yabu but i do see your point.
I think some people ruin it for others.
Some let them off at really unreasonable times, fireworks not appropriate for gardens amd bloody teenagers messing around!
My animals hate fireworks so i keep them in for the week around new years, bonfire night etc
We haven't had any fireworks for few years but i wouldn't like them banned.
I agree that you really can't compare wild animals and pets with fireworks.
I would like those chinese lanterns banned though!

LumelaMme · 01/01/2016 18:40

OFGS.
Yes, let's just BAN them in residential areas. That's obviously the answer, rather than considering restricting them to certain days and times.

We had fireworks last night, in the garden, at 11.45. The pub had fireworks at midnight, much longer and louder than ours. I have seen loads of people today who noticed the pub's fireworks and there was not one negative comment, even though these people have dogs, small DC and livestock.

It's daft to ban fireworks completely from residential areas because some people are idiots. Much better to regulate the idiots. but that would involve some thought and the weighing of opposing points of view, rather than just a knee-jerk response, so where's the fun in that.

Lum even done reasonably it's still fucking dangerous, disruptive and unfair

NotSayingImBatman · 01/01/2016 18:54

My neighbours have a particular fondness for large, professional grade fireworks in large quantities. Had my own personal 'Nam moment at midnight when the whole fucking bedroom lit up like midday and the dog and DCs were shit right up as well.

But I smile indulgently. They're young - early 20s maybe - and when they start producing children mine will be big enough to stay up and enjoy the professional grade fireworks I fully intend to set off at every opportunity. Oh yes, revenge will be sweet.

WahhHelpMe · 01/01/2016 19:01

For those that say displays only, what about the elderly, or disabled be it physically or mentally, that can't handle big crowds of people, getting to a location where it is, or going around that location?

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 19:03

If you're that disabled you're not going to be in a fit state to light a load of fireworks...

OP posts:
DisappointedOne · 01/01/2016 19:04

I don't get what people get out of them? They just make a racket

I feel the same about cats. Fucking pointless shit machines. I'll take fireworks every time, thanks.

DisappointedOne · 01/01/2016 19:05

Totally agree, had a good hour of them last night. Wouldn't mind a few minutes at midnight but these started at 11 and went on til well after 12; no fun if you have to be up early for kids or work.

Yawn.

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 19:06

Cats are living creatures don't be so ridiculous.

OP posts:
DisappointedOne · 01/01/2016 19:12

That are free to crap all over the area that my child plays. Lovely. I can't tell you how much I adore cleaning up after other people's cats.

Quite a lot of people are also allergic to them (even a small amount of cat hair can hospitalise DH. Can't say that about fireworks.)

WahhHelpMe · 01/01/2016 19:13

But you could be with family or friends? I very much doubt everyone who set fireworks off were on their own...

TaliZorah · 01/01/2016 19:15

The risk from fireworks is much higher than cats. You just don't like them fireworks are actually dangerous
