In ridiculously sad excited. I got given an Instant Pot Duo 60 for Christmas and it is utterly fantastic!

I cooked a cheesecake in 25 minutes. It's delicious. Then I pot roasted a 2kg joint of beef in 45 minutes -beautifully tender and still just ever so slightly rare in the middle.

What is the difference between a slow cooker and pressure cooker and what would suit me better? (Family of 4, me - main cook - going back to work soon so need an easy option for cooking everyday things)

lougle · 02/01/2016 15:24

claig if you do 'quick pressure release' (QPR), you literally knock the venting knob a quarter turn and it lets out the steam within about 90 seconds. It has an electronic lock which doesn't release until it is depressurised for safety. If you want to do 'Natural Pressure Release' (NPR), where the steam dissipates over the lid surface to depressurise (better for meats), that takes about 10 minutes and contributes to the cooking time. So a cheesecake generally takes 35 minutes: 25 mins cooking and 10 minutes NPR.

HF22 -slow cookers are great, but they only do one thing. The instant pot (or to be fair, any other multi-function electric pressure cooker) has a slow cooking mode.

Pressure cooking combines heat and pressure, to speed up the cooking process (a 4lb beef joint took 45 minutes) and because of the pressure, flavours tend to be intensified.

The instant pot is greatbecause it has delay timers, so you can set it to be ready at 6pm, say, and it automatically switches to 'keep warm' mode at the end of the cooking time.

I got an instant pot for Christmas too Smile I love it.
So far I've made BBQ ribs, lamb casserole and Chinese belly pork.
Tonight I am doing Hawaiian chicken and now thanks to this thread a cheesecake

claig · 02/01/2016 15:37

Thanks, lougle, sounds great.

I want one after reading this thread! What's the difference between the duo 7 in 1 and the duo 60 or are they the same?

lougle · 02/01/2016 15:49

Poppytime, the main differences are that the 7-in-1 has a yoghurt function (which can do yoghurt, ricotta cheese and a special fermented rice), plus two pressure settings (high or low), which the 6-in-1 doesn't have.

At the moment, the Instant Pot site is cheaper than the Amazon price. In fact BBC Good Food has a discount code that will save you £30, plus giving £30 of accessories:

I've been thinking about getting a pressure cooker for a while. What are the advantages of an Instant Pot vs a traditional pressure cooker?

HemanOrSheRa · 02/01/2016 16:06

Uh oh! lougle what have you done?! Grin. A chicken from frozen in 35 mins? Shock

lougle · 02/01/2016 16:10

SMIKMUT The advantage is that you can precisely control how long you food cooks for. It's electric so can sit on any hard surface. It automatically locks the lid in place as pressure builds, so it's safe. It automatically keeps warm after cooking, and it keeps count of how long it has been keeping warm.

lougle · 02/01/2016 16:12

Herman it's true! To be completely upfront, it will probably need 30 minutes to come to pressure because the chicken is so cold, but hundreds of people have posted pictures of their 'fall off the bone tender' chicken after 35 minutes cooking from deep freezer.

I've just had a flick through my Jan 2016 copy of the Good Food magazine. You can get the Instant Pot Lux 60 for £79 inc p&p with code GF161 on the instant pot website. I'm going to give the GF157 code a go though lougle for the Duo 60.

lougle · 02/01/2016 16:23

From all accounts, Herman, it's worth the extra £20 for the extra function. You must come back and share photos of your creations Grin

HemanOrSheRa · 02/01/2016 16:31

Well, the code GF157 does indeed work. Because I've just ordered the Duo 60! I did have a look at the facebook page you linked to lougle and lots of people there were saying that the Duo is better.

Love a good kitchen gadget, me Grin.

lougle · 02/01/2016 16:38

Happy days!

Thanks lougle - my finger is poised on the order button but DH is saying I need to find cupboard space before we can buy it - fair enough really as we do already have a lot of gadgets and a small kitchen - wish me luck!!!

Acorncat · 02/01/2016 17:02

I've had one for about a year and all I use it for is to steam veggies Blush. And the occasional risotto. I had great ambitions when I got it so really should use it more! I got it at Costco, possibly cheaper than Amazon.

Stratter5 · 02/01/2016 18:13

Can you can in it? As in preserving.

lougle · 02/01/2016 18:31

I've made space by getting rid of the slow cooker, etc that I don't need now that I've got this -good luck!

Stratter no pressure cooker has been certified for pressure canning yet, but apparently hot water canning can be done.

eatingworms · 02/01/2016 19:11

Oooh I am very very tempted. I could chuck out my slow cooker and steamer to make room for this.

Stratter5 · 02/01/2016 19:19

Ah ok thanks, I shall continue to live in hope

PuntasticUsername · 02/01/2016 19:28

Damn you lougle. Why couldn't you have told me about this a month ago, so I could have got it for Christmas? My birthday isn't for fecking MONTHS yet. Yabvu.

MrsHarveySpecter · 02/01/2016 19:33

YANBU. Got mine in the Amazon Boxing Day sale. Love it!
