To tell you all about my Instant Pot electric pressure cooker?

In ridiculously sad excited. I got given an Instant Pot Duo 60 for Christmas and it is utterly fantastic!

I cooked a cheesecake in 25 minutes. It's delicious. Then I pot roasted a 2kg joint of beef in 45 minutes -beautifully tender and still just ever so slightly rare in the middle.

Yes, don't stir tomatoes in.

Dumplings will be a bit flat if you pressure cook them, but if you put a lid on if and use the steam function they come out beautifully. There is an instant pot lid on Amazon for £12.99.

I ran out of cereals today. So just before the school run, I mixed some flour, suet and water. Then rolled it out, drizzling golden syrup over it. I rolled it up, loosely covered it in cling film, then put it in a foil tent. 20 minutes on manual with QPR. It was done by the time I came backGrin

Envy I've been eyeing these IPs for about a year but never took the plunge, I'm considering buying one now it's at such a good price. I am a kitchen gadget collector though and most get relegated to the cupboard.
Only reason I haven't bought one is because it seems a bit daunting, getting it to pressure, cooking then releasing pressure. How do I work out all the times for stuff. Hmm I currently mostly use my slow cooker for things like Stew, Shepherds Pie meat, Chilli, brisket, pulled pork. And I like that I can just bung it in and forget about it.
What's this about tomatoes? Does it burn tinned ones, if so how would I use them for my chilli.

ScrambledSmegs · 20/01/2016 18:30

This thread has been the push I needed to finally get one - I've been lurking on the Facebook page for a while but found a lot of the recipes slightly off-putting because of the frequent use of the word 'broiling'. I hadn't bothered to find out that it meant sticking it under the grill, not some mystical version of boiling that rendered stuff brown Blush

So far all I've done is the initial water test and poaching Seville oranges for marmalade (10 minutes on manual! 2 hours that normally takes) but am looking forward to trying lots of recipes. I've got a cheesecake in there now and am going to use the yoghurt function asap as the family gets through bucketloads. Wonder if it will reduce the palaver involved in making pastitsio? Although that might require 2 of them...

lougle · 20/01/2016 18:42

scrambled congratulations!

Mustbethin the problem seems to be the sugar content of the tomatoes -it catches and burns on the bottom. But the way around that is to add the tomatoes on top of the other ingredients then don't stir. You stir it once it's finished cooking, then it comes out perfect.

Hmm. Seems soggy. Not sure what I did wrong as I read all of the instructions up there ^^ fully and made notes. Drat. I will have another go soon.

Anyway, I'm sure it will taste good. Just wouldn't pass the Mary Berry test.

lougle · 20/01/2016 20:58

Don't despair! It does seem soggy. Just blot any sitting water with some kitchen towel, then put it in the fridge and ignore it for a good few hours. Then look at it. Beautiful cheesecake. Have faith!

Scrambledsmegs, lovely to see your name crop up! Any likelihood of you rejoining the brookers? 😉

bestcatintheworld · 20/01/2016 21:42

So far, I've made vegetable stock (very good), three bean chili (amazing), red lentil chili from cookbook (meh), rice (better than what I normally manage), and steamed potatoes (very good). Altogether very successful. Love the machine.

Sallystyle · 20/01/2016 21:59

DH did sausage casserole. He added sausages (obviously) and he cheated by buying those colman's casserole mix, he added two of them, some water and a tin of tomatoes.

It over heated!

It still cooked enough and tasted good though.

Sallystyle · 20/01/2016 22:01

He did add the tomatoes first, so now we know why!

ScrambledSmegs · 20/01/2016 22:04

Hi Loopy! Er... no Grin DC2 has been sleeping like a 2 week old recently, am shattered and reminded of why I'm terrible at the early days

ScrambledSmegs · 20/01/2016 22:08

lougle I'm afraid it genuinely is soggy. I got a bit carried away with my cleverness and swirled a bit of fresh raspberry coulis in the top before cooking, which in retrospect curdled it a bit and enhanced the wateriness. I've now learnt my lesson and will be doing it properly next time.

Thanks for the kitchen towel tip, will be doing that!

lougle · 20/01/2016 22:10

Oh shame!

can I ask about the discount codes??

are we all ordering from amazon and using the good food discount?

I am really keen on the 7 in1 and £99offer is a great saving.

Once the creditcard is sorted next week I am in there! I don't want to give them too much of a turn so soon after Christmas!

Yddraigoldragon · 20/01/2016 22:48

I am at the point with mine where I don't look at recipes. Essentially I brown whatever meat we are having in olive oil and then clean the bottom with stock, top up with veggies and hit the soup button. Very very lazy!

Changing the spice mix and veg combo changes flavour, so I have added curry paste etc, or tomato and herbs. The amount of liquid used changes the consistency from a casserole consistency to more of a soup.

It really suits my low carb diet, essentially I just chuck it all in and eat when it beeps Grin Struggling to remember when I last cooked a meal on the stove tbh.

Pangurban1 · 21/01/2016 13:09

Whoever started this thread, it has has greatly increased the profile of Instantpot.

Having said that, I have just purchased one using the Gf157 code and did get it for £99, free delivery, with spare ring and mitts. Tondelay, I think that is the best offer on the market (even though I have amazon prime). It is until the end of January, I think. The accessories prices are better on amazon at the moment, lids and spare bowl roughly half the price of the Instantpot website. If you have prime you can get free delivery. Haven't tried it yet as it just arrived yesterday evening and had other things to do. I think I'll start using it this evening.

It is very clever. It is really a hotplate pressure cooker. With what looks like the easiest, minimal cleaning I have seen yet. Just a stainless steel bowl, which you can get a lid for and stick in the fridge! I will know for sure tomorrow. I had a wonderful Tefal pressure cooker aeons ago, but you had to wash the whole blinkin' saucepan. I used it all the time.

Does anyone have recipes for stocks? This would be great rather than simmering for hours on end.

claig · 21/01/2016 15:05

'are we all ordering from amazon and using the good food discount?'

I didn't order from Amazon. I ordered directly from the UK Instant Pot site. The code gf157 works on there at checkout. I don't think that code will work on Amazon, but am not sure.

I ordered it by Adding to Cart from this page and then entering gf157 on the checkout page.

www.instantpot.co.uk/product/instant-pot-ip-duo60-electric-pressure-cooker-uk-model/

I think you need to create an account on the Instant Pot site before buying.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 21/01/2016 16:00

thanks you two claig and pangurban :o

this morning I managed to work out the IP site, vs amazon, and the discount codes but was still pondering whether I'd get the freebies or not :D

I am all poised and ready for empty creditcard day! :o

ScrambledSmegs · 21/01/2016 17:04

Undaunted, I'm making the DC's favourite sausage and beans casserole now. The speed you can cook dried beans in the IP is amazing - I forgot to soak overnight but managed a couple of hours in cold water before doing a fast soak and they haven't split. Pretty amazing.

Hopefully this will justify my purchase after the cheesecake debacle!

ReedBunting · 21/01/2016 17:49

Scrambled thanks for mentioning beans. I need to put some in to soak ready to cook tomorrow.
Have ordered a spare inner pot and a lid from Amazon as I'm already finding that I need it for 2 things in quick succession.

whats4teamum · 21/01/2016 18:15

I used the code and got the freebies. Ordered Sunday and picked up today. Missed delivery yesterday as nipped out for 10 mins.

Cooked big bag of black eye beans in 10 mins so far.

Currently have beef in Guinness on the go.

Pangurban1 · 21/01/2016 18:46

Tondelay

Just in case my post wasn't clear (and I'm sorry I don't think it was), I bought mine off the Instantpot website using the Gf157 code, like Claig. It ended up the same price as the amazon one, but you get the ring and mitts and delivery is free, so no extra advantage in amazon prime. I hope I haven't led you astray!

I was just saying the accessories are better priced on the amazon website rather than the Instantpot one, at the moment.

I think I'm going to use water from my Brita as I don't want limescale to build up.

Sallystyle · 21/01/2016 19:17

I just had a lovely chicken and mushroom dish spurt all over my kitchen when I released it.

Stock. everywhere.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 21/01/2016 19:26

I got it pang :o ....and the page next door to this one is all pending and ready to go!

I feel I shall certainly need ALL the amazon accessories.

Oh U2....that's dreadful! That why I am a bit scared of pressure cookers! eeeekkkk!
