To think a grown up shouldn't call their mother 'mummy'

Is it just a bit weird hearing a 40 year grown old woman call her mum 'Mummy' all the time. It just grates on me.
AIBU?

I'm in my 40s and tend to refer to my parents as mummy and daddy when I'm talking to them, or with my siblings or close friends. But then so does everyone else I know (N Ireland. Very normal here, not posh at all).

But with people I don't know so well, I'd say 'my mum said X' or 'my dad did Y'.

treaclesoda · 01/01/2016 08:06

My own children call me mum mostly though, not mummy. I've always preferred mum.

Chococroc · 01/01/2016 08:09

It's entirely up to the individuals concerned

ftmsoon · 01/01/2016 08:10

YABU. I call DM 'mother' and MIL is 'mum', nice and easy to differentiate. DB calls DM 'mutti'. DM calls DGM 'mummy'. If I thought my friends were judging me, I'd wonder why they'd cared; I couldn't give a shiny shit what strangers think.

echt · 01/01/2016 08:15

I notice the OP has not yet offered her preferred option.

FelicityFunknickle · 01/01/2016 08:19

DH and his sibs (all in their fifties) refer to their mother as mummy.
In fact, lots of his old school/family friends do too.
They are pretty posh though.
I am common so I call my mother "mum" Grin
It never crossed my mind to be bothered by it tbh.

FelicityFunknickle · 01/01/2016 08:20

What about "mater"?
Or "mama"?

eatyourveg · 01/01/2016 08:36

dm and her ds (both in their 70s) still refer to my gp as mummy and daddy

cantgonofurther · 01/01/2016 08:40

My 14 year old calls mummy but never in front of her friends.

Candycoco · 01/01/2016 08:41

I call my mum 'mum' but she is from N. Ireland so I know it's common to use mammy and daddy there.
I only have one child and she still calls me mummy even though she is 11. No one else will call ever me mummy so I want to make it last! She knows she's not allowed to call me mum at home Grin and she doesn't mind at all. but I don't mind her using it with her friends etc, I'm not that cruel lol

cantgonofurther · 01/01/2016 08:43

My mum and her sibling used to call my nanna "mother". I found that strange.

I say mummy and daddy, always will. I cringe when I hear mum or dad. It sounds disrespectful imho.

KinkyAfro · 01/01/2016 08:44

I'm 43 and I often call my mum, mummy. It's mostly when I'm being daft or she's done something nice for me. I also refer to myself as mummy when I'm talking to the dog Grin

KinkyAfro · 01/01/2016 08:45

And I'm not a bit posh btw!

PizzaLegs23 · 01/01/2016 08:45

A 40 year old grown woman using a three year old's tone for anything is creepy as hell but calling your mummy mummy in a regular tone is not at all

timelytess · 01/01/2016 08:45

Our own dear Queen called her mother "Mummy". I see no reason why others should not follow her excellent example.

I called my own mother 'Mum', and referred to her often as 'that bitch'. However, I am not an excellent example to follow. Xmas Wink

allnewredfairy · 01/01/2016 08:47

Mumpsy or mumps! ☺

Ginny365 · 01/01/2016 08:50

It really grates with me. It just smacks of little girl not wanting to grow up (I only know one adult who does it and she's a woman)

TheoriginalLEM · 01/01/2016 08:51

my dp is 50 and still calls her mummy. i think its a working class thing. i say mum but my cousins say mummy and they are well 'ard Grin

ShatnersBassoon · 01/01/2016 08:54

My mum tried to force me to keep on with mummy and daddy. It made me cringe at 10, so I stopped using it.

She thought it was rather posh and marked her out as a cut above the mums HmmConfused

TheoriginalLEM · 01/01/2016 08:55

kinky - i work in a vets and call most clients mummy and daddy (i tend to talk more to the pets than the owners so im referring to them in the third person) they do look at me a bit Hmmsometimes but i don't care

TooSassy · 01/01/2016 08:57

How bizarre. Wow people really do judge about business that has got sweet fuck all to do with them don't they?

YABVU, I occasionally lapse into mummy with my mum. I love her, she's amazing and it's a term of endearment. People like you totally fuck me off OP. So long as they aren't calling you mummy, none of your damn business.

FFS.

Pranmasghost · 01/01/2016 09:03

We always called my grandmother Mother and my mum was Mammy when I was young, up to 18.
When I left home to go to college I became a bit pretentious so worked hard to say Mum.
I miss 'me Mam' very much.

SevenOfNineTrue · 01/01/2016 09:12

YABU Sounds like you have an issue with anyone 'posh'.
