Nan
Nanna
Great Nan
Aunty
Mom

I realise it's irrational (and if you use any of the above, please don't take offence.)

But does anyone else hate the 'sound' of them? Xmas Blush

I've never heard of a GM being called Nanny - I'd assume she was the help

UninventiveUsername · 26/12/2015 11:45

Haha Nanny. The help indeed. I had an au pair when I was growing up, not a nanny I suppose. Still, I don't believe people are geuinely that confused by the idea of calling a gm, 'nanny'.

TaliZorah · 26/12/2015 11:46

I'm jus surprised so many people have nannies I thought it was an old fashioned thing.

90sforever · 26/12/2015 12:17

Yes but orange noodle you're not so completely unaware that you had no idea people use the word nanny to describe their parents mothers are you?

It's the pretending you've never heard of nanny as grandmother that I find ridiculous. By all means say it's not what you're uSed to.

Anyway if someone really was posh they'd have a governess Wink

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/12/2015 12:17

I don't like aunty.

I had grandma/ granny. I did not have a nanny. My son on the other hand had a grandma / granny and I employed a nanny.

I had never come across "nanny" meaning grandmother until I had a ridiculous cross purposes conversation with someone who was under the impression my son was collected from school by one of his grandmothers despite the fact both lived several hundred miles away. Apart from that conversation I don't know anyone who uses it to mean a grandparent.

"Nana" is either a fictional dog, who was employed as a nanny, or a fictional 19th century French prostitute.

LassWiTheDelicateAir

Oh for goodness sake.

Are you sure you should be posting on MN with all the hoi-polloi?

Have a word with yourself!

Lol. I have a nanny. The children call her by her name do yours call yours "nanny"? That's hilarious. Nanny can I watch TV? Nanny can you take me to brownies LOL

No one said that. All our nannies were called by their first names but a "nanny " as far as I am concerned is an employee. I had never come across anyone using that word for a grandmother until a conversation with someone who mistakenly thought I was talking about grandparents.

Lass surely you know people call their grandmothers nanny? I don't call my mum "mam" but I know some do!

90sforever · 26/12/2015 12:33

Goodness Lass you've had a very sheltered life

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/12/2015 12:36

Tali Why the huge disbelief,? I had never come across anyone who called their grandmother "nanny".

90sforever · 26/12/2015 12:39

I've never come across anyone who called their mother Mather but I am aware that it happens. I find it amazing that you have to know someone who does it to know of its existence as a "thing". it does sound incredibly sheltered.

timelytess · 26/12/2015 12:42

Dislike Mom, Nan, Nana, Pop. Not too keen on Grandpa.
Grandma is fine. I'm 'Grandma'. Granddad is fine - dgd's late grandfathers were 'Granddad.
Mama is good. Mummy and Daddy also. I sign myself 'Mummy' in email to dd, she calls me Mum or Mama. Mum and Dad, fine.
'Mam' is not so good but I accept it as my mother and aunt called their mother 'Mam'. I called her Granny or Gran. Nobody calls me Granny or Gran. Yet. Dgd seems happy with 'Grandma' at the moment.

TaliZorah · 26/12/2015 12:42

Because you'd have to be very sheltered to have not realised

Be fair, I haven't, MrsD, although I read the books.

hefzi · 26/12/2015 12:48

Our family has never used "Nanny" or derivatives thereof - because we have goats!

There are certainly regional differences in names - lots of people in the NW have Nains and Taids because we're not far from Wales, and Mammies because we're close to Ireland. However, I wouldn't get bent out of shape by whatever other people chose to call their relatives Hmm

I have :) but have never seen CTM!

Nanny0gg · 26/12/2015 12:55

Nannies abound in the streets of 1950's Poplar.

Clearly that is why it is usual in my family.

Because we are common.

Xmas Grin

We had to call my grandmother 'Nannie' but I didn't like it and would refer to her as 'my grandmother' when talking to school friends - not sure why Xmas Grin

jorahmormont · 26/12/2015 12:59

Totes common over here. Hate the word "grandma".

chipshop · 26/12/2015 13:05

I can't stand Nanna/Nan/Nanny either, it just doesn't sound right to me. I had Grandmas and my mum is Grandma.

MIL however is firmly a Nanna - when I occasionally forget and call her Grandma she looks really angry!

Works quite well having one of each anyway.
