To have realised I have an irrational dislike of some names for family members

I realise it's irrational (and if you use any of the above, please don't take offence.)

But does anyone else hate the 'sound' of them?

I don't mind aunty but agree with you on the rest - don't know why. I also hate 'nanny'

Dp mum goes by Nanny, it suits her and no I don't like it as a name.

People say mam or mammy around here and it really grates. I was brought up to say mum, and granny / grandma not nan/nanny/nanna.

Aunty is fine though.

SiL (34) talks a lot about 'mummy'.

I hate the word 'wife'. It sounds abrupt and Victorian.

Mam is a regional name though? Certainly where I'm from it's the norm. We had grandma, grandad, nonna (Italian?) and nondad. Works for us so whilst I agree that some of these grate slightly, YABU because it's what your family want.

Mom is just American and YANBU on that one. So YABU and YANBU. HTH! (splinters in arse)

Auntie (aunty?) is fine. Nan Is fine. I'm not mad keen on the rest and mom sounds strange to me.
Neither my mum or MIL will allow granny as they think it makes them sound like old ladies- they're both nanny

What can you do though if that's how family members have decided to be referred as? I wish my kids had grandmas, instead they have nannas which I'm trying to encourage them to shorten to nan.

I've got over Nanny, as she adores DD and I think it will evolve to Nan, which I don't mind, when I become Mum rather than Mummy. I hate Grampy, but as my stepdad is Grandpa, it does leave Grandad free for my late Dad.

You'd hate it at my house then full of aunties, nans and nanas.
I personally hate grandma it feels hard and cold. Probably because I associate it with repressed upper class downton abbey types.

My intense dislike of 'Nanny' stems from reading a terrible undergraduate essay which had completely misunderstood a crucial episode in an early 20th century novel (which was the basis for the entire argument of the essay) by thinking that the character referred to as 'Nanny' was the upper-class children's grandmother, rather than an elderly servant.

Why this student thought an aristocrat slept with the children on the attic floor, spoke with a Cockney accent and wore an apron, I have no idea.

No the repressed upper classes have Grandmama and Granny.

Grandma is much more MC.

Never understood 'nanny' ..and derivatives like Nan, Nanna.. Children's grandparents are grandma and grandad - Nanny is someone employed to care for the children when they were little. Far too confusing. Does anyone know how the name for a servant in wealthy households morphed into a pet name for grandparents ?

I hate Aunty, I will not be called Aunty.

Dh sis tries to get her kids to call me Aunty, I have said that I am not their aunt so Creiddylad will be fine.

Also dislike Nanny.

Our son has a Granddad, a Nana, and a Yayo (Dmil sadly no longer with us). They named themselves. Is that ok?

I'm known as Mummy. DH as Daddy or Daddy-schnoofs when 4yo son shouts upstairs that DH has had a cuppa made for him

Friend of mine got very upset when someone at the school gate asked her nephews if she was their Nanny. She thought they meant grandmother.
