This is all light hearted, because of course I wouldn't repeat this to my friend, but I can't help but bloody feel for her girls! Grin

No word of a lie, the girls are going to be called Chummy and Bonnie! AIBU to say these names are a bit.. Something?

She was technically called Eugenia Victoria (after two queens - in the book at least) but had the nickname Bonnie because she had eyes as blue as the Bonnie Blue Flag.

I think Melanie started it by singing the song.

If you have a nickname and it's the only thing anyone calls you, I guess there's not much difference between that and your real name.

CoraPirbright · 19/12/2015 15:55

I don't especially like Bonnie but at least it's a proper, recognisable name. Chummy, on the other hand, is just ridiculous!! Are you sure you can't do her a massive favour and get her to switch it to Chemmy (like the skier Chemmy Alcott - I think her full name is something like Chimene but I have no idea how it's pronounced). That POOR kid!!

claig · 19/12/2015 17:54

Chummy, no!
Bonnie, OK, not great but OK

LeaLeander · 19/12/2015 17:58

Chummy? Isn't that the dowdy nurse on "Call the midwives" ??

Fine for a nickname but dreadful for a given name. Do people think they are naming dolls or dogs or something rather than actual human beings who will need to be taken seriously in adulthood?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 19/12/2015 18:11

Camilla Cholmondeley on Call the Midwife. I am pretty sure Cholmondeley is pronounced "chumly" and thus Camilla's NN is "Chummy".

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 19/12/2015 18:13

Is she going to call her son Featherstonehaugh and pronounce it Fanshaw Grin

alltoomuchrightnow · 19/12/2015 19:01

Is that right, Hearts? Never knew that! It misses out several letters! Spellings like that always confuse me. I remember driving through Garboldisham in Norfolk. My then boyfriend said it was defintely pronounced 'Garble-shum'.

I went to school with a Bonita, usually known as Bonny. My friend's cat was called Chummy. Child will HATE her! (I know someone who has a toddler Bonnie and it suits her)

MultishirkingAgain · 19/12/2015 19:35

I know of Chum as a cheaper brand of dog food ...

VimFuego101 · 19/12/2015 19:43

It makes me think of Chum Bucket from SpongeBob!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 19/12/2015 19:48

Alltoomuch I know right! English pronounciations are so fecking weird especially to a North American ear.

Leicester should be Lye-sess-ter not Lester. Belvoir should be belle-vwoih not beaver. Gloucester should be glow-sess-ter not Glosster. Greenwich should be Green-witch and not grennitch. And so on Grin

Salmotrutta · 19/12/2015 19:58

Dalziel is a good one - confuses lots of people.

It should be pronounced Dee-Ell but unless you are Scottish you might not know that.

MitzyLeFrouf · 19/12/2015 19:59

I know Dalziel from the police show. An easy way to remember is that you just pronounce the first letter and the last letter and ignore all the nonsense in between Grin

MultishirkingAgain · 19/12/2015 20:02

I like Towcester.

But not as a child's name.

carabos · 19/12/2015 20:07

I know a couple of adult Bonnies.
Bonnie and Chummy in my mind are a pair of fat tweedy maiden aunts.

TeaFathers · 19/12/2015 20:18

Chummy? Mother of God, that's deplorable.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 19/12/2015 20:28

I taught a Rayon over twenty years ago. He was a little get.

ShelaghTurner · 19/12/2015 20:30

Dear God Almighty. Chummy??

finetonive · 19/12/2015 22:12

chum is fish guts that is thrown overboard to attract sharks.

Bonnie is a name you give a person when you think the girl is morbidly obese but are desperate to say something nice about her, so you say she is 'bonny' Hmm

MyMoneyIsAllSpent · 19/12/2015 22:33

I called my cat Bonnie :) Mind you, she is beautiful :)

Salmotrutta · 19/12/2015 22:34

five - yes, the fish guts has been mentioned once or twice up thread.

But "Bonny" does not mean obese up here in Scotland - it means pretty.

So if someone calls you a "Bonny lassie" up here it means they think you are good looking.

So baldly stating that Bonnie means "morbidly obese" is inaccurate if it only means that in part of the U.K.

Outaboutnowt · 19/12/2015 22:47

Where I am, calling someone bonnie is a big compliment. Definitely not something you say when you can't think of anything nice to say Hmm

Gileswithachainsaw · 19/12/2015 22:57

bonnie is not great but it's a name at least.

chummy sounds like a dog food

I'd be secretly hoping the babies are hiding their willys from the sonographer and be spared the pain. ....

providing the boys back.up names weren't Adolf or something

SalemSaberhagen · 19/12/2015 22:58

Another nice place name to try and pronounce - Cogenhoe. Any guesses?

Always helps differentiate between a local and a visitor!

EatingMyWords · 19/12/2015 23:01

Cooknoe! Ravensthorpe is Ra'anstrop and Althorp is Alltrop.

JessTitchener · 19/12/2015 23:02

My childhood teddy bear is called Bonnie. Named after Bonnie Tyler obviously. Maybe the parents are big fans...
