Mother wants to bring a chicken to my vegetarian Christmas dinner

That's kind of it in a nutshell. We've invited 10 people over for Christmas dinner including my mother. We're veggies and I've put together a lovely Scandi veggie menu. She's told me she's bringing a chicken and I've said please don't. Firstly because we're veggie and I don't really want a dead bird on the table and secondly I can't see why she can't last a few hours without meat.

My relationship with her is very strained this year, she's been pretty horrible to me and I'm getting to the end of my tether.

AIBU to tell her not to bring meat or stay at home? She could always come over after lunch if she's going to insist.

If the meal isn't really Scandinavian then why does the OP insist on calling it that? Is it just a way to make it a "theme" meal? I suspect she thinks it sounds more sophisticated than "veggie meal." I wonder if she has shared her menu with all the guests yet.

originalmavis · 18/12/2015 16:09

I was just thinking that. Surely Scandinavian would be ham, fish, reindeer... Not aubergine. Isn't that more Mediterranean/middle eastern?

derxa · 18/12/2015 16:09

I'm going to say it now. Where is the OP? Grin

originalmavis · 18/12/2015 16:09

Off to hunt aubergine.

londonrach · 18/12/2015 16:11

She's abandoned us and we've gone rogue.

We stayed at a scandinavian hotel once and dh nearly cried when we came down to breakfast. Row upon row of picked fish, cured meats and GHERKINS!

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 18/12/2015 16:14

Mmmm! - I actually do like gherkins. With a sausage roll and cold meat

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2015 16:16

As it should.

Fuck off BigChoc Xmas Grin

Is anyone else thanking their lucky stars they're having a faux-Scandi-veggie-free meal with all the trimmings?! Bring on the pigs in blankets, I say

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2015 16:21

From the title, I also envisaged the OP's Mum turning up mob-handed, chicken-wise:

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 18/12/2015 16:22

Rice pudding/custard, yummy. Skin of rice pudding/custard, yeuch!

Chicken/pork, yummy. Skin of chicken/pork - yummy also! Xmas Grin

SirChenjin · 18/12/2015 16:25

mavis weeing on shark meat definitely sounds like something the Scandic would do...or maybe that's the Icelanders and it's whale meat? Confused

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 18/12/2015 16:26

BigChoc - Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

(And that's the ad I've been thinking about, Londonrach, since joining the thread. It's so sweet)!

Sparklycat · 18/12/2015 16:27

My mu always tries to bring a turkey to our veggie Xmas dinner, answer is always no. Ours is a meat free house and people respect that it don't come.

Weeing on fish? Yikes - is that what makes a rollmop?

hedgehogsdontbite · 18/12/2015 16:29

There's definitely no weeing on the dinner round our neck of the Scandi woods! Shock
