To let you all know that disabled are having their benefits cut

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2015 19:26

The DWP has today launched a consultation aimed at cutting the number of people eligible for the daily living component of personal independence payment (PIP) by up to 35%. The cuts will be aimed at claimants who qualify for PIP because of their use of aids and appliances and may include replacing awards with discretionary voucher payments.
The press release and consultation document published today claim that 35% of all daily living allowance awards are based solely on the claimant’s need to use aids and appliances.
This is flawed as
A)often disabled people require assistant, however Atos are only scoring then as needing an aid.
B) even if you disability needs listed in the pip form can be met by aids most people will have many other needs not mentioned on the form.
To suggest the only extra cost of being disabled for those claimants, is the cost of aids is absurd and insulting.
The consultation ends on 29 January 2016, conveniently over the Christmas New year Period.
Please if you can take the time to respond.

Things like this leave me scared for the future for Ds, he gets DLA at the moment but mind boggles what will be left by the time he turns 16, I doubt it will be anything which can properly help him - or others who need help.

The process to get pip is already rediculous and enough to put people off without making it harder.

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2015 20:40

Leaf it will apply to anyone who claims pip once the new rules come into place. When existing claimants renew or change circumstances it will apply to them.

Also this will stop any carers being eligable for carers allowance.

sorry for sounding ignorant but are they saying those that use aids will get their benefits cut ??

fidel1ne · 11/12/2015 20:44

I hadn't heard this. It's going to be a disaster for a lot of people. Thanks OP.

FourBootz · 11/12/2015 20:45

Well....fuck.

DP is going to have to leave work soon to look after myself and dd.

My mum used look after us when he was at work but has had to get a full time job due to her own financial pressures.

We're on the breadline as it is, will be even tighter when he finishes work. If the Tory's come after us we have no wriggle room left at all Sad

celestialgin · 11/12/2015 20:49

Gosh yes carers allowance. The sneaky bastards.

Akire · 11/12/2015 20:53

The problem with Tory benefit consultation is its already rigged. Like last time before pushed in PIP the got a few people to agree that in principle people with visual impairments should get more help mobility then used this to then cut the range anyone qualified from 50m to 20metres. So a small number of people benefit while loads lost out.

BathtimeFunkster · 11/12/2015 20:54

Well disabled people are everything that is wrong with society - non-lucky, non-rich, non-not-disabled.

Why should society look after the people who need help when there are well-connected people who could use the money to be entrepreneurs and create some "disruptive" "technology"?

There are food banks for people who are really motivated to eat non-perishable food.

Baconyum · 11/12/2015 21:01

Bastards!! Shared on fb as I have quite a few friends/relatives this will affect as well as me.

I've said it on here and on fb tongue in cheek before, I'm now genuinely scared the Tories want the disabled and mentally ill hidden away in institutions with only basic needs being met (gruel&water?) And the rest of the unemployed in bloody workhouses!!

You know, I hadn't heard of this but I'm not at all surprised.

I bet it will go ahead. Tax credit cuts were shelved because people stamped their feet and banged their drums because they were losing money. I doubt there will be the same support by non-disabled people for this case. Lots of people only care if it affects them. Sadly.

celestialgin · 11/12/2015 21:09

Yes the disabled are an easy target, which makes this even worse.

Princessfrog · 11/12/2015 21:12

Isn't it sad for those who genuinely rely on DLA are being effected by this.

In my village, there is a certified DLA cheat, I can't report him because he'll know it's me. I know this is a little off topic, but what should I do?

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2015 21:14

Sally if someone only previously qualified for pip because they are assessed as needing aids only, they will no longer receive pip once the new rules have been confirmed.
Instead they will either receive no award, or vouchers, or a lump sum of lower monthly payments. None will come with passported benefits, and no one will be able to claim carers allowance if they care for them.
This will be new pip claims, renewals and change of circumstances.

What is a certified dla cheat? Biscuit

fidel1ne · 11/12/2015 21:18

Certified but not yet caught? You'll have to explain that one Princess.

Samcro · 11/12/2015 21:19

Why is any one suprised,
Scameron and his ilk have made no secret of their dislike of disability
No one will care about this, as long as they get to keep their tc

TaliZorah · 11/12/2015 21:19

How is he a certified cheat?

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2015 21:22

No needing assistance does not count as aids.

OP posts:
seasidesally · 11/12/2015 21:23

thanks op for that info

wow wheelchair users and walking frames etc will be really affected

Ineedapiginblanket · 11/12/2015 21:23

YADNBU OP!

My Dd gets DLA and I get carers and I am dreading them swapping her onto PIP! Sad

This government are so good at aiming budget cuts at people who have no voice!
