Donald Trump thinks there should be a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S.

Beeb news here.

OP posts:
claig · 09/12/2015 00:01

'After his pronouncement about banning Muslims, he has lost all chance of winning the general election.'

According to Roger Stone, former Trump aide and former Republican operative, on Sky News today, Trump has "just improved his chances of being President". He didn't seem to be joking. Amazing.

ElinorRochdale · 09/12/2015 00:18

The Met commissioner has responded more politely than I could manage and has offered briefings to any/all presidential candidates who which to know more about policing in London.

He could start by pointing out that our police manage to do their jobs without routinely carrying guns on the street. Like the officers at Leytonstone the other day.

I bet there were some less polite responses behind the scenes and off the record.

Blu · 09/12/2015 00:32

This is what comes of not playing cricket. He would never say that if they had a Test Series to play against Pakistan.

Though I appreciate that he may not be concerned about banning Baroness Warsi should she ever plan to visit on government business.

pilpiloni · 09/12/2015 00:44

I live in the U.S. and have yet to meet one American who doesn't think he's a joke and an embarrassment. Then again. I've also yet to meet a republican! Guess that's an advantage of living in nyc Smile

mimishimmi · 09/12/2015 01:37

Oh crap. So where do we go now? This won't just be in the U.S/UK. We served in WW2 against fascism so they'll definitely go for us too if it turns into a race war. They genuinely hate anyone who is not rich, who is a bit 'ethnically suspect' or not on board with them and want to punish them/us for that. We've tried the peacemaking but just way too many vested interests at work here and no point anymore. I fear for my whole family - many of whom are not 'white bread'.

ChipsandGuac · 09/12/2015 01:42

pilpiloni I have friends who are Republicans and even they think he's a joke!

I remember the first time I found out that one of my best friends was a Republican. I had to sit in the dark for a while and think about our friendship!

pilpiloni · 09/12/2015 03:26

want2besupermum

All the Jews I've met here have been completely horrified by what he's said about Muslims. Trump is not appealing to a Jewish base by bashing Muslims! He's appealing to uber-conservative Republicans.

Want2bSupermum · 09/12/2015 06:05

Younger Jews no but they are blue. He is appealing to older Jews or those who have moved here recently from Israel. As someone who is Jewish and has been at temple this week they was talk and it wasn't the horrified gasp you would expect. Sure they don't love him but they prefer him to HC.

SettlinginNicely · 09/12/2015 07:45

I cannot see him winning the general election.

I think they will choose Rubio in the end because the big money will back him. They want a republican to be president, and if DT wins the primaries that won't happen.

The worrying thing is that DT has pulled the public discourse to the right. Now a lot of outrageous things don't sound that bad compared to what Donald has been spouting off.

TalkinPeace · 09/12/2015 08:34

TBH I have some family members who are VERY republican, but of the WASP rather than evangelical variety and they find him an utter embarrassment
sadly they know that they have allowed the GOP to be torn apart from the inside and are resigned to Hillary next

A rambler said:

"The more popular explanation of Trump’s motivation is that he’s an unhinged lunatic who is manipulating our worst instincts to become the next Hitler. I don’t know Trump’s inner thoughts, so I can’t rule that out.

But we can compare the lunatic-Hitler hypothesis to the Master Persuader filter and see which one does the best job at predicting. And keep in mind that you are only reading this blog because the Master Persuader filter is the only predictor that saw Trump atop the polls at this stage of the race.

The Master Persuader filter predicts that Trump’s call to end Muslim immigration will help him in the polls, not hurt him. The degree of benefit depends on how many terror attacks hit U.S. and ally soil in the coming months."

Petition to discuss banning Mr Trump from the UK in parliament has JUST hit the magic 100,000 so I do hope that it will be made a matter of parliamentary debate for inciting racial hatred.

The US needs a representative who its ally will allow on its soil whether it likes it or not.

Absolutly

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 09/12/2015 12:22

red

I think he is ultra dangerous but I felt reassured by the lovely man on News night last night, ( play wright from US) who said almost laughing, how awful trump is but managed to also minimize him because we all know he is a dick.

i really don't want our parliament to discuss him!

RedToothBrush · 09/12/2015 12:35

If our parliament are REALLY smart, if they debate this, they should instead offer a formal invite from the British Government for a visit mid campaign and roll out the red carpet rather than ban him. Unlike other hate speakers, he's in a different position where he has a mass audience through television. And threaten to encourage a boycott of the Trump brand until he responses to his summons and gets his backside over to blighty.

The key bit is, everyone has to be ultra nice. We protest by being nice to him not with placards.

Boris can show him the sights of London. Boris is a good diplomat when he wants to be and will give him a good run for his money if he comes up with crap. Whether you like Boris or not, he is the man for this job. He will go down well in white republican US with his stereotypical bumbling British persona as it plays into the myth of the British and the Royal Family and potential Trump voters seem to like fairy tales. Oh and take him somewhere where the local MP is Muslim too, and they can say hi as well and ask why they wouldn't be allowed to visit to US.

I'm sure that it would make for good television.

SettlinginNicely · 09/12/2015 12:49

The US needs a representative who its ally will allow on its soil whether it likes it or not.

I don't think the people in the US inclined to vote for DT give a rats ass what our parliament thinks about him.

RedToothBrush · 09/12/2015 13:01

That's why I countered by saying we need to invite him over instead upon reflection.

TalkinPeace · 09/12/2015 13:05

Trump's potential supporters could not give a flying what the UK thinks or does.

Have a look at a copy of USA Today : it shows you where voters real priorities lie inside their own state and that's about it

RedToothBrush · 09/12/2015 13:11

With the whole world watching, do you think its just about Donald's voters?

Topseyt · 09/12/2015 13:12

I hope Trump doesn't even get through the nomination stage. He is an arse, and already traditional allies of America, such as the UK are making it clear that they would find it very difficult to work with him.

He would be a disastrous President.

I must admit that I quite agreed with Boris Johnson when he said that the only reason he might avoid visiting certain areas of New York was the real risk of bumping into Trump.

I know that was meant to be in mockery, but it made a fair point IMHO.

Disclaimer - I am not dissing New York. I like New York and have visited it before. It is Trump I don't like, and never will.

Auti · 09/12/2015 13:21

I think Trump will defeat the Establishment

The few Presidents that have tried have been assassinated.

I think Trump knows the West has been sleeping, thinking their Wahhabi/Saudi puppets would never get out of control.

I think Trump knows this is spinning out of control after decades of billions of funding from the Saudis who have spread their poisonous ideology through Mosques and Madrassas through the Muslim world.

Putin knows this too.

RedToothBrush · 09/12/2015 13:25

There this rumblings of him being thrown out of the Republican Party and he has muttered about standing as an Independent.

I'm not sure that the nomination stage will necessarily be the end of it.

It will be interesting to see how badly his international business interests are damaged by this though.

DH is struggling to decide whether Trump really believes this, but is actually doing this as he is a stooge who believes in liberalism and this is the best way to destroy the ultra right of the Republican party and bring American mainstream politics kicking and screaming more to the centre.

Sadly I do not share his optimism here.

Topseyt · 09/12/2015 13:31

I must google Trump's main business interests. I want to avoid accidentally supporting him if I possibly have a choice.

NoTechnologicalBreakdown · 09/12/2015 13:35

It is really scary how there is just no quality control on who runs for presidential elections in the most powerful country in the world. It really is another world up there in the high social strata, down here in normality we ask for basic intelligence and evidence of both intelligence and knowledge for most jobs. Did you all hear about him saying the internet should be closed down? www.theregister.co.uk/2015/12/08/donald_trump_wants_bill_gates_to_close_the_internet/

This man would have the keys to nuclear weapons. It's just terrifying that he is in the running. He makes Cameron (who wanted to effectively remove all internet security) look like bloody mastermind.
