To say that 'fart' is not an appropriate word for a 2yo?

Basically, DH thinks it's fine to say farty-farty whenever DD has wind, which she thinks is hilarious and now copies.

I've said that I don't think it's a nice word for a child to learn. My argument is that fart is along the same lines as 'crap', not offensive as an adult but you wouldn't want your toddler saying it. He says it's not the same at all and that fart is utterly non-offensive. It's not a huge deal, we're kind of just a bit bemused with each other's views over it. So who is being unreasonable?

How about 'guffed' ?Grin

SummerHouse · 03/12/2015 21:04

Fart - no

Turd - yes

Turd for DP - no (as an expression not a gift)

Hume... "Expression"... Quite like that. Grin

Seeyounearertime · 03/12/2015 21:04

36 and farting is fine by me.

NotAWhaleOmeletteInSight · 03/12/2015 21:04

Dd, 21 months, is under the impression that bottoms become trumpetous.

Wishful80smontage · 03/12/2015 21:05

And growing up we did 'pumps' or 'puffs' (as in puff of air)

shrunkenhead · 03/12/2015 21:05

It was a swear word in our house, I'm 39, and to this day I wouldn't use it around children and don't like to hear kids using it. Ds understands some children say it but we don't, we prefer bottom burp.

PandasRock · 03/12/2015 21:05

It's just a word.

I can't get too het up about it, tbh. There isn't a decent alternative.

And I agree re: hang ups over fart, poo, etc. we all do it. It's really not a taboo subject (not that we spend hours talking about it either!)

PandasRock · 03/12/2015 21:06

Oh, I'm 38.

ofallthenerve · 03/12/2015 21:06

I have an irrational hatred for people saying 'pop' instead of fart. Possibly because my granny says 'pop' instead of soft drink. We say trump round here. It feels like a happy medium (to me at least).

ofallthenerve · 03/12/2015 21:07

Sorry yanbu though. I try not to say fart round my DC.

IoraRua · 03/12/2015 21:07

Turd? A turd is a shit, no?
I can't stand the words trump and parp, there's just something very Hyacinth Bucket about them. Nothing wrong with saying fart, definitely not a swear word in my books. But to each their own.

HollyCarrot · 03/12/2015 21:08

Can't really see a difference between 'fart' and 'parp' tbh!

I have a terrible habit of laughing when DD farts.. call her Little Miss Windybottom. She loves it. (am terribly immature)

IcecreamBus · 03/12/2015 21:09

I quite like trump too! I use that one myself quite a bit.

Summer - turd for DP....Grin

MissTwister · 03/12/2015 21:11

Fart is not a swear word. But it's terribly uncouth....

partialderivative · 03/12/2015 21:13

I often refer to my youngest as 'Little miss farty pants'

SummerHouse · 03/12/2015 21:13

Yes indeed. A turd is a shit. Just mentioned as a word me and DP disagreed on appropriateness like the OP's fart.

twirlypoo · 03/12/2015 21:13

I am conflicted! Ds says fart and trump, but im never quite at ease when he says fart as it just sounds wrong out his cute little mouth (he's asleep, I've had wine, hence why he's depicted so angelicaly!) im 34 and def was a swear word when we were growing up.

Fratelli · 03/12/2015 21:13

I call it pump lol. That's just because I have a thing about how certain words sound!

RoseWithoutAThorn · 03/12/2015 21:13

It's not a word I use or that's used in the house. We used trump or pump.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 03/12/2015 21:14

Ha we said guff at my posh prep school in the 80s

EastMidsMummy · 03/12/2015 21:15

Crap is a mild swear word. Fart is only a little bit cruder than bum. I am 47.

KeepOnMoving1 · 03/12/2015 21:15

If Does sound uncouth and ugly.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 03/12/2015 21:16

My parents treated fart like it was a swear word so I never used it with DS but now he's a school he says it a lot. I can't find it in myself to care.

HackerFucker22 · 03/12/2015 21:16

I'm mid 30's and don't find it all offensive. DC1 calls DC2 baby farty pants - it's his pet name for her!!

AvaCrowder · 03/12/2015 21:16

It's just a word. Is the action disgusting? If so you won't make it better by calling it something that sounds sweet. If it's not then why is the word horrid?
