to think cooking two fillets of fish for one person is a bit much?

I'm going out. Spouse is cooking two salmon fillets for himself. I think it's a bit greedy and he should either have just one - or save the packet for a night when we're both in.

OP posts:

How the heck do you come to that conclusion from my post? I was mearly pointing out govt guidelines.

because you posted to support your point that sharing an 8oz is the correct way to do it.

maybebabybee · 02/12/2015 08:41

Govt guidelines say you should only have 100g of red meat a day. An 8oz steak is 226gs. So sharing an 8oz steak is what is recommended.

Oh yes, let's suck the joy out of everything. I'd better start carrying round my little book of government guidelines to follow, lest I offend the state and eat more than the recommended amount of steak.

Bloody hell, I didn't know they were people out there staring in disapproval at my portion sizes. And I am a size 10 (when not pregnant, anyway). What a joyless way to live.

Enjolrass · 02/12/2015 08:42

It's also two quarters pound burgers. Again, who would eat that amount of meat?

Me, some days. Depends on how hungry I was. Which is the point.

firesidechat · 02/12/2015 08:47

Also it's 100g of red meat a day. We rarely eat red meat and certainly not every day and I'm sure that goes for most on this thread. So 200g once in a while is fine. People seem to have lost the ability to judge diet for themselves and over analyse everything they put in their mouths. Where did common sense go?

I would. Nom nom.

TheBunnyOfDoom · 02/12/2015 08:52

A quarter pounder is TINY. And unless you're eating steak and several burgers a day, it really won't kill you to eat an 8oz steak or a double cheeseburger once in a while.

Is this the OP's issue? If so, on what basis - the environment? Is her husband overweight? Is money an issue? Does she ever eat more than the government says she should?

DeoGratias · 02/12/2015 09:01

I always have 2 salmon fillets. Fish is good. Eat more fish. If more people ate more fish we wouldn't have 60% of the population fat.

maybebabybee · 02/12/2015 09:02

although salmon is not a sustainable fish so you're not doing the environment much good, if we're going to bring ethics into it.

Bakeoffcake · 02/12/2015 09:04

"Where did common sense go?" Of course people should use common sense, people are just responding to the Hmm and Confused reactions to the OP saying she would share a 8oz steak.

There's some very common sense reasons why she would share a steak. Some people don't seem to be able to understand that!

expatinscotland · 02/12/2015 09:06

Jesus wept! 'I'm going out for dinner. But you still need to comply with what I think is right for you. Just take out the government guidelines and baaaaa!'

What a joyless way to live.

firesidechat · 02/12/2015 09:06

SarahSaves, why are you quoting me on this and what is your problem with what I said? It looks like we agree with each other, but maybe I've misunderstood you. I was talking to Bakeoff about steak and had already said that I thought the op was a bit ott.

SarahSavesTheDay · 02/12/2015 09:06

If the OP and her husband are keen environmentalists, fine to consider this possibility but you're not entirely correct about it being unsustainable.

I'm curious about what her bent is, though. Weight, environment, money?

SarahSavesTheDay · 02/12/2015 09:07

Ah, sorry. I misread your post. Flowers

DurhamDurham · 02/12/2015 09:08

I think if I was going out and passed a comment about what and how much my husband was planning to have for dinner he would tell me to mind my own business.....which is exactly what I would say to him if the situation was reversed.
Op you're going out, just let him get on with it. If you like to make a point of eating vegetable based meals and don't mind sharing a steak you are unlikely to miss the salmon.

maybebabybee · 02/12/2015 09:09

sarah I was responding to deo saying it was good to eat more fish. Not necessarily. Depends what fish it is.

expatinscotland · 02/12/2015 09:11

'WHat was the total weight of the fish he ate'

I can't believe the OP doesn't know! I mean, doesn't everyone weigh out everything they eat in order to comply with government guidelines?

firesidechat · 02/12/2015 09:11

Bakeoff since I, and I suspect most people, don't eat 100g of red meat a day your guidelines are irrelevant.

I also old enough to have lived through numerous "guidelines" and I would have been changing my diet like a yo yo If I had obeyed all of them. I'm quite happy to cook from scratch and eat a varied diet without any anxiety about whether the government would approve.

SarahSavesTheDay · 02/12/2015 09:12

Sure, but you can farm salmon sustainably. That was the point of my post.

firesidechat · 02/12/2015 09:14

Thanks Sarah, I thought it might be that.

Enjolrass · 02/12/2015 09:14

no people can't understand that thinks an adult shouldn't be able to eat a portion size that he wants, when the Op won't be there (so not like she is going hungry) based on the fact that they share an 8oz steak.

Sharing an 8oz steaks isn't the norm, telling your partner what they can eat (especially when you aren't there) based on the fact that you normally have small portions also isn't the norm.

And I pretty sure of the OP said her dh was going out and commented on what she chose to eat (then equated it to him not caring) people would be appalled.

Only1scoop · 02/12/2015 09:22

I reckon he kwoffed down the fish....

Then produced a couple of pastries he had hidden ....and got them down his neck whilst chortling to himself in a state of defiant greed.

Bakeoffcake · 02/12/2015 09:27

God people don't read the thread properly anymore in this place. It's like trying to discuss something with an octopus.

Just so things are clear......

I've agreed that the OPs dh should eat what he likes.

The 100g red meat guidelines have got NOTHING to do with the OPs dh eating two portions of fish. Fish and red meat aren't the same for those that seem to mixing the two up

The OP had been mocked for daring to say she shares a steak with her DH. Some people are trying to explain that actually, sharing an 8oz steak may be a normal, healthy thing to do. This has nothing to do with friggin fish.

Thank you and goodbyeGrin

expatinscotland · 02/12/2015 09:27

He probably has a drawer full of Mrs Kipling's treats and choccies to nosh on when the OP leaves the house and breaks all kinds of government guidelines. Think of the sugar!
