to think cooking two fillets of fish for one person is a bit much?

I'm going out. Spouse is cooking two salmon fillets for himself. I think it's a bit greedy and he should either have just one - or save the packet for a night when we're both in.

I think 2 is a lot, but what do I know? I don't have a dh that eats loads.

Wow, it must be a bundle of fun at mealtimes in your house op - let the poor guy eat what he wants.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/12/2015 19:50

What's wrong with sharing an 8oz steak? Genuinely baffled at the outrage there. We very rarely have steak because my husband doesn't like it much so it tends to be my default choice when we eat out, but I might buy a small steak to slice into strips for a stir fry. What's so awful about that? It's not cheap, for a start, and from an environmental point of view we'd all do better to eat less animal protein and fill up on veg.

StarkyTheDirewolf · 01/12/2015 19:53

My Dh eats like food is going out of fashion. He'd happily steam an entire salmon and spend the night eating it to himself. But he is a large man, my dps buy two roast chickens for Sunday tea between 5 because Dh can eat a whole one. Grin You'd think he'd be obese! Sometimes I feel a bit like the witch in hansel and gretel loading his plate up!

firesidechat · 01/12/2015 19:53

I don't measure amounts of protein or anything else in my food. I buy it, cook it, eat it and enjoy it.

My food bill is probably larger than some, but some people's clothes budget is many times what I spend. Vive la difference.

mrsmeerkat · 01/12/2015 19:54

Dh eats two od he has had a packed lunch but on evenings when he has a hot lunch I just cook one for each of us

That said, they are tiny and my toddler could eat those small ones bother to him

KeepOnMoving1 · 01/12/2015 19:54

I don't think anyone here is in a position to say it's too much or too little. I'm a tiny size 8 and can eat two fillets myself.

ChinaSorrows · 01/12/2015 19:54

I'd say 2 "typical" salmon fillets would be gluttonous.

If he's starving, eat more veg and carbs. That much protein is too much

firesidechat · 01/12/2015 19:56

Well I use much less steak in a stir fry too, but you can't beat a medium rare slab of steak as an occasional treat

pullofthemoon · 01/12/2015 19:56

I hate it when people get all intense about food. Some days I am hungrier than others. That's all.

FindoGask · 01/12/2015 19:56

Supermarket salmon fillets can be teeny. If I do a whole salmon I easily eat the equivalent of two of the supermarket ones.

TheSecondViola · 01/12/2015 19:57

Is it only me who's struggling to reconcile this thread with the ones where everyone feeds a family of four for £50 a week?

Yes its only you. Everyone else can tell that there are lots of different people on the site with different budgets and opinions.

ofallthenerve · 01/12/2015 19:57

I don't think there's anything that mad about sharing a steak... We did this the other day in fact. I also get the meat guilts so try not to eat too much of it. That said I wouldn't call 2 salmon fillets 'greedy' unless I was on so tight a budget that a salmon fillet would be a rare treat. If that's not the case I would say get off his case tbh. Buy another pack tomorrow.

It also depends on what he's having with it I guess. It's not a lot on its own.

SarahSavesTheDay · 01/12/2015 19:57

I wouldn't be impressed if my husband tried to tell me how much fish I should be eating, except under a food rationing scenario e.g. zombie apocalypse.

VestalVirgin · 01/12/2015 19:58

If you can afford to buy another salmon fillet, I really don't see the problem.

(Unless he doesn't eat up and ends up throwing one away. That's an annyoing habit.)

needastrongone · 01/12/2015 20:00

fireside I agree, I don't, have never, and will never measure anything in my food, protein or anything else. Eat and enjoy, and stop when full. Been a size 6/8 all my life. If I fancied 2 portions of salmon and no veg, then I would have it. Or, I might have a plate of stir fried veg, if I fancied that.

DH is having a Pukka Pie for tea. That's very rare, but if that's what he fancied, that's cool.

Tiggeryoubastard · 01/12/2015 20:02

What sad, joyless lives you seem to lead, OP.

TheOnlyColditz · 01/12/2015 20:02

WHat was the total weight of the fish he ate?

RoseWithoutAThorn · 01/12/2015 20:03

Like some of us don't actually buy fish you know. We often have loads of salmon, trout, bass etc given to us. DH often comes home from his visits with game and fish.

TrashPanda · 01/12/2015 20:03

I could and would easily eat 2 salmon fillets. We've just had sausage and mash for dinner and I had 3 sausages and 3 chipolatas.

Sansoora · 01/12/2015 20:04

The terms 'portion' and 'pension pot' make my blood boil.

I bloody hate them. I have visions of someone standing there wearing gloves without fingers on them counting their portions into the pension pots.

Give the man a break. Let him have as much fish and steak as he likes even though he's probably done all the growing he's ever going to do.

pullofthemoon · 01/12/2015 20:04

That's a bit nasty tigger, and I do think the OP seems a bit uptight about food generally though.

FannyTheChampionOfTheWorld · 01/12/2015 20:05

I don't think you can categorically say it's too much or too little. People have different energy needs. However, I'd be fucked off that he was eating such a large portion after preventing me from boiling a bloody kettle. It's fine to have a 'bare minimum' attitude with things but if that's the case, it should apply to both of you.

Moln · 01/12/2015 20:09

2 whole salmons would be greedy. Not so sure about fillets.

You have an issue about portions and he has an issue about the cost of kettles boiling. We all have are oddities.
