to think Beyonce isn't a great dancer?

DD is in a play where her and a few friends do a dance routine to Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love'.

I'm not a fan of Beyonce on many levels and I just don't get why lots of people talk up what a great dancer she is. Perhaps the choreography she's consistently had isn't great but am I missing something?

She seems very heavy footed to me with very little grace and fluidity. All she seems to do is shrug her shoulders up and down, booty pop and whip her head around from side to side.

DD is constantly going on about what a great dancer Beyonce is but I just can't see it. I did dance for many years but I'm no expert so maybe I am missing something.

Beyonce is fabulous!
Destiny's child were and still are one of the best bands ever! However the film dream girls puts me to sleep everytime...
Indo wonder who will be the next Beyonce /j-lo?
Rita-ora and the like seem so meh in comparison.

SouthWestmom · 30/11/2015 13:46

I have no opinion on Beyoncé but I am reeling at the pp who put Elvis and Robbie Williams together as not having great voices.

Songlark · 30/11/2015 13:50

otherwise she's due for criticism what with being a woman and all.
What on earths the fact that she's a woman got to do with anything? So no female should ever be criticised? What a strange notion. Confused

Wagglebees · 30/11/2015 15:05

Don't know what your talking about OP...m.youtube.com/watch?v=HuPolWVxzYQ

Leafitout · 30/11/2015 15:13

For me it's her figure. She's not stick thin and I think she promotes a healthy body image. And she can sing and dance. She only wears the best hair extensions that her money can buy re the rats hair! She's made a good living from her dancing so it can't be that bad or she'd be skint

OikyBollocks · 30/11/2015 15:18

Allof Oh no, not Bootylicious. Beyonce sounds like she's got hiccups for the first half.

ButtonMoon88 · 30/11/2015 15:26

I agree wholeheartedly about her promoting healthy body image. There is another thread about Cheryl FV and she is horrendously skinny, not healthy looking at all. I know which figure I would prefer!

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/11/2015 15:30

Beyoncé is so massively overrated it's actually a bit shocking that so many people have bought in to it.

"Queen Bey". Like fuck.

OikyBollocks · 30/11/2015 15:33

Button See I don't think she does promote particularly healthy body image.

Although she's not stick thin, she's still conforming to a male view of what women should look like and embodying particular dominant forms of female sexuality.

I think, in part helped by her, the image of an 'ideal' female body shape is changing to one which is more curvy. That's good and more healthy than the unrealistic stick insect look but if this is the ideal and she embodies the ideal then I don't think that's particularly great because it's still encouraging women to be the ideal, rather than challenging the notion that there is an 'ideal' female body shape which is largely dictated by men.

Although she's got more meat on her bones than others, she still bounces around in skimpy outfits which show off her best assets. I don't think this does promote a good body image for women (young girls I guess) because it still reinforces the idea that what counts is her body and the extent to which that conforms to what Western society sees as ideal for a woman and, therefore, valuable.

AnyFucker · 30/11/2015 15:37

Woman power ! My arse. Or should I say it's all about her arse.

OnlyLovers · 30/11/2015 15:37

I know of people in RL who have actually done that ridiculous 'cayenne pepper' diet because Beyonce did it. That's not particularly good promotion, IMO.

And I agree with Oiky that fetishing ANY kind of female body, stick-thin, 'bootylicious' or anything else, just continues to reinforce the idea that that is what's important about women.

Although of course it's arguable that none of this is particularly, or certainly, solely, her fault.

dustarr73 · 30/11/2015 15:46

There is only one Queen and that is Madonna, she would wipe the floor with Bey if they where dancing.

ButtonMoon88 · 30/11/2015 16:06

Oh I didn't know about the cayenne pepper diet!! Blush

FireCrotch · 30/11/2015 16:25

Jason Manford did that cayenne pepper diet. I think you have it with maple syrup?! Remember reading his "toilet experiences" during it. :o

OnlyLovers · 30/11/2015 16:30

Yes, I think you 'eat' cayenne, maple syrup and is it lemon juice?

Of course, slebs no doubt do it when they've got a week or whatever between gigs/recording/promotion and can just lie about the house. IRL I've heard of people trying to go about their normal lives, go to work etc and practically passing out/being utter twats to everyone because of hunger-induced irritability.

AnyFucker · 30/11/2015 16:45

apparently, she also did the maple syrup diet

AnyFucker · 30/11/2015 16:45

or is it the same thing ?

OnlyLovers · 30/11/2015 16:47

I think it's the same thing.

AnyFucker · 30/11/2015 16:48

so t'is

ButtonMoon88 · 30/11/2015 16:50

Well in that case I take it back, what a stupid thing to do!

FireCrotch · 30/11/2015 17:10

Apparently it kickstarts a detox. Can you imagine the misery. Just having that for a week and then you do the detox? Jesus.

OurBlanche · 30/11/2015 17:13

Oh dear. Single Ladies is not based on West Side Story

No, it is based on a Bob Fosse routine, performed by his wife, and Beyonce has always acknowledged it

If you're gonna hate at least do it right - and that includes trying to do those dance moves yourself, they are deceptively simple Smile

LivingInMidnight · 30/11/2015 17:23

She's not ballet trained in the sense most people would use, she did a bit of it as an adult. Most of the dancing she did as a kid resembled aerobics, but that was mostly bad choreography. I'm not a fan of how she became successful but can't knock her, she's a great performer.

Debbriana1 · 30/11/2015 18:15

Well, am one of the biggest fans in the world. I actually think people do underestimate her singing and dancing. The best songs are those that didn't make it as singles and are on the album. The best album after DC was 4. For its vocal ability. Her best song that she has ever performed live is dangerously in love and I think it was in Atlanta. I always say thats when she portrayed her vocal gymnastics.

One of the ways you can tell how good a singer she is, is by looking at how people perform her songs on competition shows like X factor. Most people can't seem to manage to go from one range to the next. Even the best singers when singing her songs.

I have been to some of her shows and loved it. Yes, it's a known fact that she borrows or steal choreography from other artists, but when you compare her version and the original is that hers just look ten times better. Yes and what you can do is compare the single ladies video or count down to the originals.

BrushtheHeat · 30/11/2015 18:27

Hmmm, willing to admit that I know nowt about dance but I love fka twigs' dancing and music although her live performances are a bit ropey and seem to sacrifice vocal perfection for impressive dancing.
And Shakira looks like a good dancer who is also vocally strong. But none of them seem to.have the hype of Beyonce, perhaps because she has been in the business for such a looong time! She seems to achieved further status since being in a relationship with jay-zee, not meant to be catty, just an observation.
I do love early destiny's child...
